Angels Online: Christmas Activities

The long-awaited Angels Online Open Beta Test has been launched, and in order to celebrate upcoming Christmas, IGG announce that they will hold the “Christmas Activities” between Dec 19th and Jan 2nd.

Backdrop:
Christmas is a very important festival in Eden, because it is a symbol of peace and love. In order to celebrate the most important day of the entire year, Angels will be organizing a big ceremony that will last 2 weeks.

A huge Christmas tree will appear in Eden, and it is said that when it radiates its dazzling light, Eden will be peaceful and full of happiness, and if lovers take an oath in front of the tree, their relationship will last forever.

Everyone in each city is busy preparing for the upcoming Christmas and decorating their Christmas trees, however some loathsome monsters have stolen all the ornaments on the Christmas trees when the Angels were sleeping. People are in a panic, and it’s time for the little angles to do something.

Event Duration:
From EST (GMT-5) Dec 19th 2007 to EST (GMT-5) Jan 2nd 2008

Event Contents:
1. Silvery Date
During the activity, Angels level 10+ can get a special [Night Star] from the Christmas Angel. There are two kinds of stars, one for girls and boys respectively. You can exchange it with an Angel of the opposite sex, and then take it to the Christmas Angel for a Christmas Box. If you make it successfully, you can’t do it again until 24 hours have passed. Hurry up!

2. Lost Sheen
A huge Christmas tree will appear in the open area of the Angel Lyceum, and an NPC called Christmas Angel near the Christmas tree will tell you about the event rules.
Angels will have chances to obtain Xmas Trinkets when they defeat monsters. You should pay more attention to those monsters whose levels range from 21 to 50, because they are probably the criminals. When you collect certain numbers of Xmas Trinkets you can find the Christmas Angel and exchange these Xmas Trinkets for special rewards.
Some monsters dropped trinkets in some remote places, so Angels of collection talent have chances to obtain Christmas balls when they exploit resources which require collection skills level 21 to 41. They can also exchange these Christmas balls at the Christmas Angel.

Zero Online Review

Zero Online is a futuristic giant robot/mobile suit (like Gundam or Mech Warrior) MMO set well…in the future. This is coming from the TQ Digital, the people who created Conquer Online, Eudemons Online, and Crazy Tao. Right from the beginning, I noticed a lot of glaring similarities between their other games and this title.

The graphics are definitely not something to write home about. They are at least a few years old and really look uninspired. What I will say is that there is no one in the world that should be unable to run the game. It is extremely quick and will play on even the most basic of computers. This bodes well for their PvP since you do not have to worry about dropping graphical settings when a war begins. Different guns and melee (hand to hand) weapons look different and have different effects when used, especially in coordination with skills. Still, it would have been nice if more time was spent making the game look good.

The sound in the game is not going to win any awards either I am afraid. All of the music sounds completely uninspired and could really use some attention. Maybe the composer was having a bad day when he put it together, though I really have no idea. The sound effects for skills or even just the use of weapons really only meet the bare minimum required. It would have been great if when you are blowing apart things like robots if sounds like the creaking of metal or the explosion of plasma tanks would have come through. There is no point in crying over spilt milk though.

When it comes to the gameplay, there is at least something to write home about. It is a bit grindy, but at least you can be automatically flown to the areas for your level where you need to grind. There are some quests in the game for experience and they help to break up the game, but by a large margin, you will be killing the same thing for hours. If you are familiar with Conquer Online you will feel right at home as it appeared to me that they basically reskinned that game to create this one. There are some differences in the gameplay, but very minor ones that will be hard to pick out.

As always, the community leaves something to be desired. Since there are plenty of kids in the game, anyone over the age of 21 will quickly realize that they are few in number. On top of that, the typical fights start out over nothing and will escalate to levels that are completely unacceptable. If the company were to accept some volunteer GMs and pay them with some item mall currency or something and allow them to police the community, it would be a much better place for everyone.

One major sore spot for Zero Online is with the performance. I am not sure if the problem was with their servers or with the network code, but anytime there was more than like 6 people on my screen I got massive lag. Considering I am running on a 5 month old machine that I built myself and paid over $1500 for the parts, there is no way it is my system that is to blame. Hopefully though, TQ Digital can address these problems in the near future.

No one can say they are not trying to reach all audiences with this game though. They are developing the storyline more for those who care about it. Events are held on a fairly frequent basis by the GM staff, and they do actually try to address troublemakers as often as they can. It is not their fault that parents use the internet to babysit and raise their kids, so the GM staff is often left to fill that role. There is a lot of potential in this game and it is still fun to play as it is, especially if you loved Conquer Online or have an older computer.

Tabula Rasa Preview

Tabula Rasa Beta Preview
Corey “Roon” Conley

For the last few years, we’ve been hearing about Richard “Lord British” Garriott’s latest venture into the mmorpg realm, Tabula Rasa. Originally just a working title, Tabula Rasa (meaning “blank slate”) has come to epitomize everything Garriott is going for this time out.

I first got to play Tabula Rasa at E3 2005 and was immediately impressed. From what I saw this was going to be an amazing online shooter. The game play seemed solid, the AI was almost frightening, and the possibilities seemed limitless. Well guess what? It’s evolved to much more. Now, Tabula Rasa is not only a great online shooter, but a fantastic mmorpg as well.
Logging in, I was pleased to see a fairly extensive character creation screen. It’s still not on the same level as, say, City of Heroes, but much more satisfying than World of Warcraft or Vanguard. I was quite happy with my rather pleasing looking pink haired vixen….all the better to destroy aliens, right?

The back story is fairly extensive, as well. You are a human military recruit joining the battle against the evil scourge of the Bane. As of now, everyone can only join the same side in a PVE setting, although you can count on PVP aspects such as clan vs. clan battles in the near future.

Anyone familiar with the established mmorpg’s out there today will feel comfortable starting off in Tabula Rasa. Many of the usual controls are there. WASD movement combined with the mouse, hotlinks on the number keys (though the most common can be easily bound to mouse buttons). Even the quest interface and backpacks will seem very familiar.
I started out in Boot Camp, which is a nice way of saying “tutorial.” Right off I learned the basics of movement, crouching (yes, you’ll want to hide behind objects while in battle), and shooting. Then I was off on the usual “go talk to this person quest.”

But that is where things changed. As I was running off to a nearby village, the Bane attacked. This is where you suddenly see how Tabula Rasa differs from any other mmorpg. A drop ship swooped in, transporting down 4 alien Thrax’s (big ugly things straight out of Starship Troopers). Immediately, players and npc’s alike converged. At this moment I had to stop and just look around, because for the first time in any game, I felt like I was in a real battle. And as suddenly as it began, it was over….and I was sporting some more XP and new found weapons.
Tabula Rasa is full of weapons, armor, and magic. Yes, that’s right…magic. The game has what is called the Logos system. You gain logos abilities by finding various shrines around the world. Ultimately you can string these Logos words together to make more and more powerful spells and abilities. There’s something quite satisfying about nailing an alien a few times with a shotgun and finishing him off with a lightning bolt!

Tabula Rasa may not be as well known as Star Wars or World of Warcraft, but I think that’s an advantage. It’s not tied to a long established mythos or cannon. With the infamous Lord British behind it, though, you can count on a detailed story unfolding over time.

Graphically, the game looks great. I played it on an Alienware laptop (full review coming soon!) on maximum settings with a small loss in frame rate. Turning it down to “Very high” ran very smoothly and looked still amazing. The world really seems alive with all the life forms, players, and npcs around.
Overall, Tabula Rasa won’t be the WoW killer people have been looking for. But I doubt that’s the goal of Garriott. This is an original game in an original setting that I think will satisfy anyone looking for a great hybrid between an action shooter and an online rpg.

Tales of Pirates: Fortune-Telling System and Mystical Clover

Since the release of the “Spring Town Chapter” extension, ToP (http://top.igg.com/) players can’t wait to visit Chinatown and the mysterious NPCs in the Spring Town with an oriental flavor.
Hocus Pocus is an important NPC, because you can learn about the Fortune-Telling system and the Mystical Clover from him.

What exactly is the Fortune-Telling System?

The Fortune-Telling system enables players to pick a lot; which can grant players the chance to obtain experience, money, double experiences, double the drop rate of items, and improve your stamina and attack power. In addition, players have a chance to obtain sheep’s hide; which can help you find treasure. So basically, the system can help some lower level players to obtain some fancy stuff.

What exactly is Mystical Clover?

However, the Fortune-Telling system can also bring players bad luck. For instance, you could lose both your experience and money. But if you use the Mystical Clover when you pick a lot, you will have a big chance to obtain rewards rather than lose them. So the Mystical Clovers are very popular amongst players. They can usually sell all of their Mystical Clovers in 5 minutes after they set up a stall in the market.

To Try Fortune-Telling System

Players need to accept the quest from the Chinese girl Chun Li and complete it then go to find Hocus Pocus and buy a Career Lot and a Fortune Lot to try your luck. Players only need to double click on the lots, and if you have Mystical Clovers in your backpack, the corresponding number of Mystical Clovers will be deducted.

Sheep’s Hide

Double click on the Sheep’s Hide to obtain treasure map and click the map to obtain the location of the treasure. Then the players can go to dig for treasure. Players need to dig for treasure repeatedly, because it is possible for the first time of digging to fail, if so a prompt will appear. It is said that the treasure contains a large amount of money, level 75 equipment, rare gems for refining, air tickets, Amplifier of Strive and Runestone.

Players need to be careful when digging for treasure, because the location may be a trap which can lead to thousands of HP damage for you. This definitely is a game for brave people.
