Gunbound Revolution Review: Variable and Fun!

by Eline Stiekema, Onrpg writer

The introduction to Gunbound already sounds very intriguing. Players are welcomed to the wonderful world of Londe, a planet strongly influenced by eight moons. A long, long time ago, there lived three kinds of people at Londe: the Miramo, the Adium and the Huboei, who were constantly in a state of war. They developed several impressive weapons, but none of them could win the battle, since they were all equal in power. Eventually peace was established, and ‘the once fearsome instruments of war were bent to the peaceful purpose of sport, and thus the great Londean game of ‘Gunbound’ was born.’

The weapons have been turned into sixteen ‘mobiles’, which players can choose from. Each mobile has its own advantages and disadvantages. Players also need to take into account that the moons and the wind can have a strong influence on the climate of Londe, and thus on the effects of their shots. Sounds complicated? It is, a little. But once you get the hang of it, it’s hilarious to play.

Mobiles

It all starts with choosing a mobile. These ancient fighting machines can make or break your battle. There are sixteen mobiles to choose from, divided into three categories, just as there are three ancient cultures: mechanical mobiles (inspired by the weapons of the Huboei), shield mobiles (inspired by the mastery of energy of the Adium) and bionic mobiles (inspired by the Miramo and their affinity for nature). All you need to know about the different mobiles is extensively explained on the Gunbound Revolution website, with an elaborate description of each mobile, a survey of the different weapon types and even an overview of the natural enemies of each mobile. I recommend reading all this before playing the game, since it makes it easier to select a mobile for the first time. Some mobiles are more suitable for newbies than others. They all have their pro’s and cons, but it’s certainly fun to give every mobile a try in battle!

Lessons

As a Gunbound-novice, you are recommended to take a few lessons. If you don’t want to be completely blown to pieces in your first few battles, these come in quite handy. There are nine lessons, teaching you all about the controls, the different types of shots, the wind, the influence of the moons, the different types of mobiles and the different game modes. Together, the lessons take up quite some time, so it takes a while before you can actually get started, but the more you understand about the game, the more fun it is to play. The tone of the lessons is annoyingly childish, with ridiculous little ‘pop quizzes’ about stuff you’ve read a few seconds before. But it’s worth the effort to endure all this: you get a reward for each completed lesson!

Gameplay

Once you’ve completed the lessons, the actual fun can start: you can go to the ‘world list’ and choose a zone to play in. There are two rookie zones, two amateur zones and two open zones for advanced players.

In the zones there’s a variety of rooms to join. Usually, there are a lot of rooms where you can squeeze yourself into, so you don’t have to wait for long before you can play.

There are five different game modes; you can see which mode is being played in each room. In the solo game mode, you battle until your opponent is defeated. The score mode is similar to the solo mode, except when you die you can come back after a few turns. You can even pick the place where you want to land when you arise from the dead. In tag mode, you can switch between two mobiles during the game. In powerball mode, you can pick up powerballs during the game, which will enhance your powers. In jewel mode, it’s all about destroying jewels, not about destroying each other. With each destroyed jewel you earn points, and the first who earns a hundred points, wins the round. In the rookie zone, score mode seems to be the most popular game mode.

Usually, players team up against each other in battle. Be careful not to hit your team members! (In the beginning, this happened to me a couple of times.) Players take turns to shoot at members of the other team. Controls are quite easy to learn, especially if you’ve played Worms: the way of aiming and shooting is very similar.

Each turn, you can choose between two different weapons: S1, which is a regular shot, and S2, which is a special shot. After four turns, SS is unlocked: this is a very special shot with a high impact, but also with a high delay. This means that after an SS shot, you have to wait longer before your turn comes again. The player with the lowest delay points always gets to go first. You can also use items when you shoot, which also gives your shot a special kind of impact but causes a higher delay.

When the round is over, the scores are presented on screen. If you did well, you get a reward: gold points, which can be used to buy cool items for your avatar at the Avatar Shop, which give you extra powers of protection. These items can also be purchased with actual money, using a ‘G coin-account’. Some items can only be purchased by G-coins, which means it will cost you money if you want your avatar to possess them. But essentially, the game is free.

Personal recommendation

Although I didn’t really like Gunbound when I started out with the lessons, I was addicted from the first real battle I played. It’s really easy to get the hang of it, so it’s possible to win battles from the first moment on. The mobiles look really cool and it’s fun to vary with them. The game is different each time, also because the moons and the wind have a strong influence on the shots. It’s also fun to use the points that you’ve earned in the battle to buy something for your avatar.

The graphics look nice, although when two avatars stand on the same spot you can’t really see who’s who anymore, which is kind of irritating. The sounds are great, but the music is dreadfully annoying: fortunately, you can turn it off.
Overall, I had a very good time playing this game, and I think I will keep playing it for a while!

Pros

– Easy to learn
– Really cool weaponry
– Great variety between different rounds

Cons

– Very childish tutorial
– Horrible music
– Graphics sometimes look kind of cluttered

Myth War II Online: Pet Animation and Game Music #4

Flying Pets are some of the fastest moving pets in the game. Their powerful wings will take them anywhere they like, even within reach of the stars in heaven. They fly and fight, earning your trust with their timely and swift attacks from above. Now the people from Myth War II Online are sharing their thoughts on these pets with everyone. Also, they are making som music recommendations. It promises to be a wonderful and inspirational experience.

Flying Pets
Good PKers in game are always supposed to make the first move. Flying pets, famous for their high movement speed, are always a good choice in a PvP companion.

River Spirit
Pets called River Spirit are real demons. They have wings and hold a Death Scythe in their hands. They are swiftly moving skeletons that will anyone other than their owners. Their aggressive attacks, amazing killing speed and high ATK growth rate are very helpful once you become involved in PKing.

Mosquito
Mosquitoes are group flyers. They take advantage of their opponents by ganging up for a group attack then slowly killing them with their Poison.

Game Music Recommendations

The intriguing melodic texture incorporates popular Arabic rhythms and a sense of mystery, leading to exploration of temptation and fear. Listening to the sounds paints pictures in the mind. A burning sun; a camel sauntering through an endless desert. The scorching sand and the gloomy sky in Desert City indicate a harsh journey.

Not all music will create spiritual hideouts for listeners. Drowning in gloomy melodies is no way to live. The feeling of madness and death walking close at hand creates a desire for escape. The Hellish darkness almost snuffs the life like a candle at the end of its wick.

Darkfall Online: Why Darkfall is Important

by Paragus, co-leader of Inquisition and MMOcrunch writer

Darkfall is on the verge of becoming a reality. Shockwaves were sent through the MMO community on Friday as Tasos Flambouras announced that Darkfall will be releasing in European markets on January 22, 2009. This announcement was followed by the deafening silence of “vapor trolls” who were once over-spoken forum activists convinced the game would never see the light of day. Not only is Darkfall coming out, but it is only 6 weeks from going live.

Every MMO player who loves this genre even a sliver as much as I do has a vested interested in seeing Darkfall become a success. If you have been playing MMOs for any length of time, you are no doubt feeling somewhat disenchanted with the state of the genre over the last few years, especially if you are a veteran like me who remembers the way things used to be. You might remember a time where a new MMO didn’t look exactly like the one before it, a time when innovation was profitable to a developer.

The Death of Innovation

It is easy to figure out how and when innovation died. A certain company made an MMO some years ago that made unimaginable amounts of money by using a model that dumbed down the game to appeal to a wider audience. MMOs are expensive and risky business propositions, and in the last few years we have seen 40-80 million dollar debacles that have brought their developers to their knees or out of business. The safest route for profit is to look at the industries most profitable game, and build the same dumbed down model for mass appeal they used. The profit being rewarded to the companies who follow in the footsteps, combined with the innovative games being debacles, has sent a dangerous message to new developers and helped fuel a trend of linear copycat theme-park MMOs.

Sandbox games have traditionally offered their players freedom, something that most of the more recent games have been lacking and some newer-school players may have never experienced. The freedom is yours to go anywhere without being boxed in by mountains that always seem to mysteriously bottleneck into a loading screen. The freedom is yours to pick a character that is yours to shape, instead of being pigeon-holed into some specific role where for some reason can figure out how to use a single type of weapon. These are the promises that a sandbox game makes, but unfortunately there has not been a successful one made since Asheron’s Call.

Ending the Cycle

Whether you believe that Tasos will deliver what he has been promising us for years or not, before you jump on bashing bandwagon, stop and think about how a successful Darkfall will affect the MMORPG genre. If a sandbox game like Darkfall is financially successful, it will send a message to developers that not only is there a market for sandbox MMOs, but there is money to be made in innovation. Think back and imagine what this genre would look like today if Asheron’s Call and Everquest 1 had switched places in terms of who came out on top financially. If any of the sandbox games from then until now had done well, I don’t think we would find ourselves in a market full of copycat games.

When was the last time you played an MMO where the death penalty really made you fearful of dying? When was the last time you could explore in an MMO without hitting an artificial wall of mountains, or you actually were completely lost? These are the type of things that have long been gone from the genre. Now most of developers making the big name MMOs don’t even have enough innovation to make their own world. Is anyone else as sick as I am of watching these stupid prepackaged MMOs come out that are based on some old franchise? Star Wars, Dungeons and Dragons, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Conan, and Warhammer are all games you are supposed to be excited about, and I feel like these devs are the same guys who used to play Dungeons and Dragons and buy those little premade box adventures because they didn’t have the originality to come up with their own.

Darkfall deserves your best wishes, even if you don’t plan on buying it. It is a vessel of hope to try to stop the madness that has turned what was once the best genre in all of video gaming and reduced it to an experience that is akin to sitting on a ride in Disneyland. You get in, you sit down, you go the one way there is to go, you watch the dolls dance, then you get up and exit with probably a lower IQ than you had before you got on. If you’re on the fence about buying Darkfall, think about the money you spent on MMO ideas far worse than this one. I think it is worth the chance to finally show support for someone who is willing to take the big risk, and show other developers that we are willing to pay for something that is original.

I know some of you will flame me and try to brand me a fanboi, and I would argue that I am a fanboi of the genre and what it should represent. I also know that for a lot of you reading, Darkfall is your last stand in MMOs. I can’t blame you for going all-in on this game after all that has happened. If you have read my words here and agree with me, I ask that you make sure you tell a friend and pass the word along; we are going to need it now more than ever.
