Final Fantasy XI April Version Update

Final Fantasy XI April Version Update
By Mary Garcia, OnRPG journalist

The version update on March 22, 2010 was the first of several promising new updates scheduled for the remainder of the year. As announced at Vanafest 2010 on February 28, the development team is bringing many major changes to the gameplay as Final Fantasy XI players know it. For more details on what’s in store for the year, readers can visit the Official Vanafest 2010 Website.

New Areas and Missions

The long awaited Castle Zvahl [S] is finally available for players to partake in Campaign battles, as well as Campaign Ops missions. New areas include Castle Zvahl Baileys [S], Castle Zvahl Keep [S], and Throne Room [S]. After meeting certain conditions, players may now also encounter the Shadow Lord and battle him to acquire his weapon and breastplate.

With these new areas also come a new set of missions, continuing the Wings of the Goddess saga. What fate will befall Sir Ragelise, Portia, and those around them as a result of his decisions? Adventurers continue to assist Lilisette in her mission to stop the past from being rewritten.

Trial of the Magians

Added with the version update is a brand new system called Trial of the Magians. This system is intended for level 75 characters to partake in a series of quests to earn rewarding equipment. Currently, only weapon “trials” are available. Relic and mythic owners may also partake in these quests to augment their weapon. Players wishing to take on these quests must speak to the Magian Moogle, located in Ru’Lude Gardens.

The development team plans to expand this system to include armor and transportation items among other rewards.

Job Adjustments

Summoner – Two new avatars have been added. After completing certain quests, Summoners can now summon Odin and Alexander. When summoned, Odin will perform his signature ability, Zantetsuken, and dismiss himself. Zantetsuken has the ability to inflict Death, and uses all magic points. Alexander, when summoned, will grant Perfect Defense. This reduces the damage taken and increases resistance to status ailments. The new avatars require the use of Astral Flow to invoke their powers. As such, the job ability Astral Flow has also been adjusted. Summoners may now use the job ability without having to first summon an avatar.

Final Fantasy XI Odin

Puppetmaster – To the joy of many Puppetmasters, hand-to-hand combat skill has been raised from C to B+ rating. In addition to this, their automatons, as well as attachments, have also been adjusted.

New Notorious Monsters

A new set of Notorious Monsters have also been introduced. Players can participate in the tiered style of these NMs, where they will be rewarded according to tier and difficulty. To battle with these new NMs, adventurers must first speak to an NPC named Assai Nybaem, located in Ru’Lude Gardens, to purchase the item “Clear Abyssite”.

Final Fantasy XI New Notorious Monsters Yilbegan

With this item, adventurers can now begin the hunt by resting in certain zones. Upon resting, the abyssite will guide the player in the correct direction the NM waits. The abyssite has a chance of changing color upon defeat of the Notorious Monster, with different colors spawning different tiers of NMs.

Synergy

The skill level cap has been raised from 50 to 60. With this level cap raise come new synergy recipes. Among the new recipes are Beastmaster jug pets, and new equipment, with synthesis materials acquired from the new Notorious Monster battles. New evolith types have also been added. In addition to this, bonuses from equipment and furnishings will now take effect when performing Synergy

Interview with TLBB Europe Marketing Director Mirko Gozzo

Interview with TLBB Europe Marketing Director Mirko Gozzo

The nice folks at ChangYou sent us this interview about TLBB Europe to answer some frequently asked questions!

1. What was the reason behind naming this game ‘TLBB’ and do you think it’s a good marketing decision for the target audience in Europe?
In China, the book this game was based on is called Ti?n Lóng B? Bù– Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils – a famous martial arts novel written by a well respected writer called Louis Cha. The book later spawned into several movies and television series and is a well-known story amongst Chinese communities. We believe that the storyline behind TLBB is so strong and genuine, that we shouldn’t shy away from anything other than authenticity and so we decided to keep the original name.

2. What type of game is TLBB?
TLBB is a 3D, martial arts MMO game with lots of fantastic features for all to enjoy. Its easy-to-use interface and navigation system is tested daily by millions of players and with over 100 pets and 70 mounts available, players have a wide variety of choices to suit them. This beautifully rendered ancient Chinese world is depicted both from the book and historical Chinese culture; therefore players can enjoy lots of different scenes along their journey as well as the well thought out battle scenarios that have been developed. Players will be able to enjoy a unique storyline as well as an addictive MMO.

3. Why did you decide to license a smaller game client with graphics that aren’t as strong as some of the other modern day MMO’s?
Many factors are taken into consideration when developing game content including graphics and performance on “average” computers. Imagine a game that has fantastic graphics and the deepest PVP system that allows more than 5,000 players to fight in one area; this game would probably only be played by a very small audience who can afford a high level-spec PC. When TLBB was developed, we wanted to allow as many people as possible be part of the game experience. Developments are being made for future projects and we’re extremely excited about what’s in store.
4. Is TLBB out in Europe?
Yes. TLBB is currently in the Open Beta phase in Europe and has had incredible feedback since the launch in April 2010. Gamers should be aware however, that they will only be able to play the European version IN Europe. Players can find out more here

5. How many TLBB players are there in Asia?
The user base of our games has been growing steadily with aggregate peak concurrent users (“PCU”) for all of our games in operations, reaching a total of 990,000 in the fourth quarter of 2009.

6. Why is TLBB so popular in Asia?
TLBB has a very loyal following throughout Asia; our PCU figure alone is testament to that. Since the release of TLBB, ChangYou has strived to develop the game further and has seen a positive effect among communities. Derived from the famous novel by Louis Cha, TLBB (Tian Long Ba Bu) brings about a phenomenal storyline that the public love. Not only does the game represent a journey for players, but its beautifully adapted landscapes, characters and features have helped TLBB become one of the top games in China. The game also offers a large and friendly community within TLBB which bodes well among players and, more importantly, has excelled in the market as an addictive MMORPG for its game-play.

7. When is the game being released?
In the EU, we have recently launched the Open Beta version and have lined up some exciting in-game events and giveaways for the upcoming months. TLBB started its Open Beta phase in China in May 2007 and now ranks as one of the Top 3 MMO games there, winning various awards for its popularity and quality. In the US, the game was released last year and an improved and modified version is now available for the European market. Players can enjoy a number of special prizes up for grabs. To find out more, click here.
8. How much does TLBB cost to play?
It’s a free to play MMO with micro transactions inside the game. We want all players to have the chance to enjoy TLBB and get a taste of its playability.

9. What are ChangYou’s long-term ambitions in Europe?
In recent months, we’ve been working hard on the launch of TLBB and have reaped the rewards since the Open Beta kicked off in April 2010. Players have taken to it in a positive way which is a good sign for the game. However, TLBB will not be the only project we launch in Europe. There are a number of plans in place for future titles to be published by ChangYou EU and so we’re looking forward to a bright year ahead of us. The focus will now be to maintain the success of TLBB and build on the interest for our players inside Europe.
10. How big is the ChangYou (EU) Team?
Our company is growing quickly and we’re very excited about the future prospects of the European subsidiary. Based in London, the team is close to 20 strong and counting. We love hearing from candidates who could potentially bring something extra to the team so all enquiries are welcome.
11. How will ChangYou make money out of F2P TLBB?
We have a secure payment method within the game and an in-game online shop that can be visited by players. The gifts & items on offer vary and we have a fantastic selection for gamers to choose from. The F2P element of TLBB is something, we feel, should be standard for players as we’d like this to be a long-term benefit for them.
12. How often do you host in-game events?
TLBB hosts in-game events around the clock. It’s one of the things that players enjoy on a regular basis. All our events are unique and cater for the European market. To view all current and past events, you can visit the events page of TLBB.
Thanks!

Wonderking Online Review – A step in the Right Direction

Wonderking Online Review – A step in the Right Direction
Rickee Charbonneau (Jammart), OnRPG Journalist

Maplewonder, Kingmaple , Wonderstory, Storyking… WONDERKING!

Wonderking Online is a 2D sidescroller MMORPG that finally reached Open Beta on January 7th 2010. Many users flooded the servers in anticipation of having a chance to play this game without the excessive hacking and glitches that were present in the closed beta.  Now that the game is released, I will share my experiences in the game along with those of other OnRPG members.

Before I truly dive into this preview, I want to briefly tackle the issue of the repetitive comparison of this game to the MMORPG “Maplestory”.  The popularity of Maplestory completely overshadows that of Wonderking, but that does not mean Wonderking is a poor MMORPG. In fact, Wonderking has some features Maplestory players yearn to access, such as Realm vs. Realm, housing, and other minor additions. That being said I am not judging which game is better-that’s up to your own personal judgement-but I did find that playing Wonderking was an enjoyable experience, for the most part, and that it promises a wonderful turnout in the 2D sidescroller genre. Whether it will live up to Maplestory is beyond me (I honestly think it can’t reach that popularity level), but then again a small tight-knit community is what a great amount of players search for.

Wonderking Battling Monster

What Makes Wonderking Truly Wonderful?

To be blunt and honest, there isn’t much that sets this game apart from the rest. However, there are some minor details that make the game that make the game entertaining and diverse. The classes, skills, equipment, items, quests, and general game mechanics are very similar to that of other MMOS, but this one adds a twist to each element. The classes are disguised with pretty interesting names, skills are more flashy and enjoyable to use, equipment looks pretty wacky (in a good way) as you develop your characters, and quests allow you to level faster than most games would permit.

There is also official word that the game will host many new features in the near future, that should be of much interest to players who play more than others (but of course for the casual players as well), such as the previously mentioned realm vs. realm system, and the housing system. This MMO is still undergoing routine updates even in its Korean counterpart.

Wonderking Explosion

The main aspect of this game that attracts so many gamers is it’s extreme ease to play. Players can reach their first job change in a matter of minutes without any grind or tedious controls to learn.

Fighting monsters for experience is not the dull repetitive action of swinging your weapon. In Wonderking, your character has a few different animations for the basic attack, and can fight off 5 or so monsters at once without much trouble-it’s pretty fun. This is equally as fun to do in parties. The more party members you have fighting on your map, the more party points you’ll earn for killing monsters, which you can then turn in for Zed (in-game currency) or experience.

Another major plus about this game isthe quality of the graphics and sound. The BGM is above par in this MMO. Some songs are very repetitive and annoying in my opinion, but they are still of great quality (and most people seem to adore them). Wonderking’s graphics are also high quality. There aren’t many monster re colours in comparison with the majority of today’s popular MMORPGS, and they are all very decent looking and surprisingly unique!

…And best of all: they aren’t all CUTE!!!!!!

 Wonderking Oh Oh

Wonderking also has a neat boss system that is available in this Open Beta phase By fighting these bosses you can earn a pretty large sum of exp in a short period of time. Some bosses are harder to defeat than others, usually because of the fact that you aren’t the only one after them… so party up!

The Not-So-Wonderful Woes of Wonderking

Wonderking may sound amazing by now, but there are a few downsides to this game that I have experienced. First, the grind does hit you like brick wall in your late 50sas there aren’t many maps designed for high level players yet. I suppose NDOORS didn’t plan on seeing their community level up so fast.

Another drawback is that killing monsters 14 levels above your character’s level will only result in earning 1/10th of the experience that monster should normally reward you with. In other words, this means that you are limited to the amount of mobs you can actually train on.

Wonderking Angry Boss

It is argued that quests are not worth completing in this game. I found them quite all right, but high-levelled players mostly suggest that in later levels it is wise to stick to grinding, as it is more rewarding in experience in terms of time devotion. I personally rather stick to quests just so that I remain on the right track. To each their own.

A Final Note…

I enjoyed Wonderking, but I don’t know whether I will continue playing steadily or not. The game mechanics are really fun, but then again it is an Open Beta; there is a limited amount of content in the game. So far I have mostly encountered tons of hardcore players and very few casual players, which is slightly discouraging, though perfectly normal for this kind of game. As much as I hate to say it, if you didn’t like Maplestory and blame your deep hatred for the game on the 2D sidescroller scheme, try this game. It may appeal to you as it appealed to me. You may be pleasantly surprised! Happy Gaming!

Pros:
– Great BGM and graphics
– Flashy skills
– Little to no grind factor for the most part
– Fun game systems to come such as RvR and housing
– Boss battles that require teamwork
– Cute and intricate outfits.

Cons:
– Lacking in content
– Still in the open beta phase (may be glitchy)
– Quests are generally frowned upon.

FoM: Update to NPC’s, a New City and New Armor!

FoM: Update to NPC’s, a New City and New Armor!

1) Non-Player Character System
Face of Mankind is pleased to finally announce the implementation of a comprehensive Non-Player Character (NPC) system that will be used by our GameMasters for the facilitation of roleplay events.

The newly implemented system will allow GameMasters to edit a wide array of variables for these NPCs, ranging from appearance, speech, and missions issued, in a completely collaborative manner, allowing us to make the most of our GameMasters talents to produce results without needing an inordinate amount of time.

These NPCs will provide missions that can be accepted by any player as an alternative to the ones generated by the factions. They will largely be used to guide players along a storyline overarching all of Face of Mankind, that runs parallel to the roleplay that our players engage in on a day-to-day basis; to facilitate one-off events planned by our roleplay oriented Council or GameMasters; and tutorials for new players to get them better acquainted with what can sometimes be a steep learning curve in Face of Mankind.

A key feature that allows FoM to do the above is the introduction of what they call ‘chained missions’, which have a definite starting and ending point, and open up further successive missions upon the completion of prior ones.

2) Release of Berlin
The long-awaited release of the city of Berlin has finally arrived, but with many significant changes made to it.

Berlin is now a dilapidated wasteland far removed from its former self. It is a city that has been torn asunder by decades of civil unrest, and where the Dominion has effectively lost control over it. As such, it is a city that is completely devoid of the rule of law – a place where crimes can be committed without any consequences. That is, unless you happen to be caught by the rare Law Enforcement Department patrol red-handed.

Berlin is essentially a no-man’s land, where no faction will ever have ownership over it. It is a place unlike any other, being completely inconquerable.

The Public News Service (PNS) reported about the “Fall of Berlin”.

3) XenoTech Expeditionary Armor set
FoM is proud to announce the introduction of the next component of the xenomorph aspect of the game; a new set of armor that is made largely from the materials culled from xenomorph body parts. It provides incredible protection against ballistic damage, which is dealt by the xenomorphs on Necars Fields. As a result, it also provides greater protection against ballistic weapons.

Furthermore, it is lighter than armors of similar protection rates. However, it must be noted that this weapon is slightly weak against damage dealt by energy weapons.
Face of Mankind - Berlin is now a dilapitated wasteland

Altis Gates Review: Well Blended

Altis Gates Review: Well Blended
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG journalist

Altis Gates (not the Japanese car) is a new 2.5D MMORPG that’s set in a world similar to that of a JRPG (Japanese RPG). Aside from the anime rendered PCs and NPCs, you’ll notice that the monster references, as well as the background schemes resemble the modern “Tactics JRPGs” that we know and love. There are tons of familiar elements in this game, which makes it rather refreshing.

The story revolves around the land of Altis where Humans, Elves, and Borgs have learned to prosper after 300 years of war (my, that’s a pretty long time). The best part about this game is that they actually managed to implement some storytelling. It’s not the best on the market, but I do appreciate the effort. Anyway, Altis Gates has got some interesting features, so let’s not waste time.

General

One thing that you should know about the game is that Altis Gates uses a turn-based system. It may be a very common feature in most RPGs, but it is a very rare feature for MMOs. The game runs on the typical isometric bird’s eye view, which is the best way, in my opinion, to view and play MMOs. Combat is also presented in this format; so don’t expect to see more of your character’s angles any time soon. While some claim it to be a mixture of Myth War 2 and Godswar, I for one think that new games need the old games as a skeletal structure in order to evolve further. Might I say that they did blend these familiar elements surprisingly well, creating an awesome product that most MMO players can enjoy.

Classes: Altis-volution!

Classes are one of the things that most players look for in an MMO. There’s nothing better than having a whole array of characters to provide individuality among players, and what’s good about this game is that it has a nice set of classes to keep you entertained. You’ll start out with the game’s two  default archetypes: the warrior, and the mage. I don’t really understand the difference between the two, but aside from abnormal statuses and bigger HP, there’s nothing that separates their play styles whatsoever. It’s still enjoyable though, so I guess that’s okay. Class advancement is done through the job system that lets you pick a higher class or “sub-class” after reaching a certain level.

Example:

After reaching level 40, a Warrior can choose to become either a Gladiator or Combatant. More options wait as you advance, giving birth to more sub classes as you progress. The bad part would have to be the linearity of your progress since individual customization can still be an issue due since your second class only grants you 2 options to choose from; however, each class is quite unique and is still satisfying at some point. Classes (including default ones): Warrior, Magician, Combatant, Gladiator, Gunner, Mechanic, Swordsman, Berseker, Magician, Black Mage, White Mage, Shaman, Priest, Necromancer, Wizard. Fifteen Classes? That should be enough to keep you customizing until the end of days right?

Gotta Catch Em’ All

Pets are a default feature in this game, which adds up to the average set of classes. You’ll be handed an egg upon starting the game, which will hatch after a while revealing your first pet. Combining your play style with your pet is a must, and can open new windows to evolve your combat style further. You’re not limited to one pet and will continue to gain new pets as you progress throughout the game, so keep an eye out for them. Pets are also capable of leveling up and carry the ability to learn and use skills. It generally means that you will be controlling two characters throughout the entire game (with the second one being replaceable), which compensates for the linearity of turn-based combat.

Graphics and Interface

The game runs on a 2.5D system which technically means 3D elements stuck in a 2D perspective or platform. You could say that it technically means Granado Espada without the camera options and effects. The characters are well rendered and the armor sets look really nice. The background isn’t so bad either, with crispy details that will keep you exploring until your character gets tired. Some of the monsters may look mighty familiar, like the beholder creature that obviously belongs to Dungeons and Dragons. I personally wouldn’t count it as a con since it’s given that most MMOs get their stuff from other titles, so let’s just be glad the monsters look great. The interface is very user friendly and the HUD is very convenient for most players. The entire layout does seem generic to a point, but it helps a lot since it saves us the time of having to adjust to other bar locations.

Interesting graphic effect

The verdict

I would say that this game has a lot of things going for it. Given the proper population, you can party up and play turn-based games like you’ve never played before. Although the turn-based system may not be the most ideal system since most people prefer to move around instead of waiting for their turn. It’s much different from playing single player turn based games as you are in charge of the entire squad throughout the fight. The graphics aren’t that up to date but are still something to look at.

The background, themes, and elements are done extremely well, giving you a concrete visual of the Fantasy world of Altis. The Pet System is what caught my attention, since this is probably one of the most advanced pet systems I’ve ever seen. All in all, Altis Gates is a very good game, and can be enjoyed by almost any MMO player out there. It could use a bit of work, but it’s definitely fine on its own.

The Good:
– Intense combat
– You don’t see these games often
– Pet System
– User Friendly
– Good array of classes.

The Bad:
– Gets old after a while
– The waiting time
– Poor story.
