Port Galaxy Interview: Intergalactic Adventure

Port Galaxy Interview: Intergalactic Adventure
Questions by Bryan King (Bryan), OnRPG Journalist
Answered by Riley, Port Galaxy Owner

Port Galaxy is a space-themed chat community currently in development. Port Galaxy promotes active exploration, creativity, and interaction between users. The team behind Port Galaxy is working hard daily to develop the game to full potential. Today, I get to sit down with Riley, the owner of Port Galaxy.

OnRPG: Hello Riley, please, introduce us to your team’s project, Port Galaxy.
Hi 🙂  Port Galaxy is a game that is going to really exceed other browser-based virtual worlds.  It’s going to be more like a virtual galaxy.  This opens the game up to unlimited possibilities.  When you join Port Galaxy you will be living on a Space Port that travels throughout the Milky Way Galaxy.  You will be able to chat, trade with merchants, meet “people” from around the galaxy, collect clothes, items, and even custom private rooms.  Users will be able to travel to a new planet about once a month, finding unique clothes, items, and rooms themed to the planet.  Virtual events will take place on Port Galaxy that will allow users to participate in fun mini-games as well.  Events such as these are going to play a big part.  With an entire galaxy of possibilities there is just far too much to list!

OnRPG: Based on your team’s work so far, how has progress come along?
My team is working hard to get a public beta release for sometime in March.  Progress has been great, and new features all the time are being included in the initial release.  New features does however mean more work.

OnRPG: Is there a storyline that you’d like to introduce to readers?
It is the future. With the discovery of new technology the inhabitants of Earth began to explore the Galaxy.  Port Galaxy became a home for many.  Soon different races were discovered, some planets were explored, and a galactic adventure had began.  The inhabitants of Port Galaxy now continue their search for new civilizations, homes, and adventures.

Port Galaxy

OnRPG: What graphic elements will be implemented to enhance the experience for players?
The graphics are going to be rendered in higher detail than you see on most isometric browser-based games.  The resolution is also going to be set higher to fit more modern sized monitors.  It will be displayed at 1024×768, although later on we plan to make the game available in multiple sizes.  The game will include rich background animations, as well as many animated collectable items.  It will be something designed for casual gamers.

OnRPG: What features differentiates Port Galaxy from other games of the genre?
A unique event system where users will be able to play many different mini-games and compete for high scores, and prizes.  A safety feature for users to protect their items from hackers.  Other sci-fi/space games usually don’t even allow for you to control a character, or create an avatar.  They usually involve designing a spaceship.  At Port Galaxy you will be able to do both.  Once the game is released you will see many differences.

OnRPG: Will events play major roles in the game?
Yes, a very big role.  The events system will allow for two main things.  Every month we will be creating new mini-games for users to play.  They will be able to compete for high-scores and receive prizes at the end of every event.  An event could be a meteor shower, where users must destroy meteors to protect Port Galaxy.  Competition between users is always fun.  The second feature is travelling to planets.  This will occur usually once a month, and only last for 3-5 days.  During these events users will have the chance to go to a planet, and collect unique items, clothes, and rooms themed to the specific planet they are on.  Some planets will be protected, and require users to complete a mini-game before they can arrive there.   Since there are so many possibilities for events and planets in the Galaxy, this truly is a great feature.

OnRPG: How will characters be able to create their own persona, and how will customization work?
Customization will start fairly simple, with changes of hair, facial structure, and clothing.  They will also be able to pick from many different colors.  There will be male & female avatars at first, with selection of skin color as well.  We have planned to add some alien races to the avatar system, but not for the initial release.  Each user will also be able to customize their profiles, and collect various awards.  Allowing users to create a custom persona is very important to us.

Viewing Station

OnRPG: Will characters also be able to create their own rooms, or build anything of their own?
They will be able to select from a few different room options on the space port itself, and decorate the room with items they get from merchants.  They will be able to get rooms based on planets they visit, for a short time.  They will also be able to collect ships (spaceships), which act as two things.  The docking zone will be used for a user profile, and users will be able to design and decorate the exterior view of their ships.  This can be done using graffiti, stickers, textures, and colors.  The interior of the ships are private rooms, which always remain locked.  The owner of a ship will have the option to invite friends or allow users to “ask to enter” the ship.  There will also be different ships to collect every month.  This will hopefully create a cool little environment for users to invite friends.

OnRPG: How will characters be able to gain from economic profit (i.e. paid currency),  and how will this be spent?
Users will be able to pick from several credit packages.  Credits will be used to purchase items, clothes, rooms, and ships.  By purchasing credits you will have a lot more to work with when creating your virtual identity.  People who do not purchase credits won’t be left in the dark, as there will always be a selection of free clothing, and items.  Credits and prizes will also be given out quite regularly to event & competition winners.

OnRPG: What future updates does your development team plan to add?
We would like to add a radio system called Port Galaxy Radio, which would act as a virtual radio station for the inhabitants of Port Galaxy.  Also voice chat has been considered as a feature we may add.  Users would have to option to request voice chat.  The planets system will not be included in the initial release, although will be added shortly after.   Other than that we feel the current features will be enough to keep users entertained for quite some time, although we will constantly be adding new content every month.

OnRPG:  What model will your community team use to make sure players join, and KEEP playing?
We will keep users active by creating new events, and competitions for them to participate in.  We will be adding new content every month, and updating them weekly.  The staff will be in open contact with users and allow them to provide feedback and ideas which could essentially be added in-game.  We also will have an active forum community for users to have discussions and contact staff members.

OnRPG:  Some development teams are made up of fresh, new faces. What experience has your team had in the MMO industry?
I personally have had a lot of experience with MMO’s, I’ve been playing them for many years now.  I’ve worked with several “staff members” from other games as well.  The same applies for some of my team as well.  I think first a person should experience playing MMO’s with users, before they should try creating something.  The users are the most important part of the game.  We are however new to MMO game development, but hope to create a great community, and a great virtual experience.

OnRPG: Are there going to be public beta stages for users to try? If so, when will these occur?
There will be an initial public beta release most likely sometime in March.  After the release we may close the game for a short while for updates, but expect everything to be working fairly smoothly.  You will be able to get a more accurate ETA if you follow us on twitter, or check our website.

OnRPG: Where do you see Port Galaxy five years from now?
Five years from now there will be so many explored planets, items, and clothes that users won’t know what to do.  Perhaps by then another space port will open up in a distant galaxy.  I’m sure the game will be full of new features, and ways to help organize the galactic stockpile of items and clothes.

OnRPG: Describe, in one sentence, why players should go to www.portgalaxy.com right now.
To find out more about the game, join the community and supply feedback and help support the project.

OnRPG: Anything else to add?
Remember we are open to communication, feedback, and ideas!  If you are interested in this type of game, now is the time to join our community, so you can offer your input find out about some pre-beta events!

OnRPG: Thank you for the interview, Riley!
Thank you.

Forsaken World

Forsaken World is a new 3D fantasy MMORPG that breaks new ground by bringing together the best of eastern and western cultures.

Discover a world named Eyrda. It was a bleak place with only a giant tree stretching from the sky to the land. In the beginning of this world only two gods existed, Dyos and Nyos. They were the rulers of all.
Dyos discovered a giant star-wheel on top of the tree, and within it were countless sparkling stars. To his surprise, Dyos saw that these were portratures of the gods! He not only found his own images on it, he also found the likeness of Nyos and many other gods.
Each of the races on Eyrda had a unique beginning, as they were created by the children of Dyos. Dwarves, Humans, Elves and Stonemen each had their own function to fulfill for the gods.
The first war of the Greats began when Mylvada, a third ancient god, was not welcomed into the world. War broke out in the northern lands of Norta, lasting for one hundred years. In the end Mylvada failed, retreating, and Norta sunk back into the sea.
After a thousand years Mylvada came back with a cunning plan and created Shylia, the most beautiful woman ever and he gave her eternal life, leaving some power in her body. Over her beautfy a second war broke out.
Shylia fell in love with a common human, Herghevid. In order to live with her lover forever, Shylia drained Herghevid’s blood from his body using the Mythic Embrace, infused his blood with godly essences, and then poured it back into his body. This made Herghevid both immortal and powerful. Herghevid became the first of the raced called the Kindred, and through his bloodline the Kindred race grew.

VanaFest 2010 Report: Final Fantasy XI and XIV News!

VanaFest 2010 Report: FFXI and FFXIV News!
By Joshua Temblett (Dontkillmydreams), OnRPG Journalist

As I write this, it is the 28th February; it is also the day fans of Final Fantasy XI were given a reason to rejoice.  No, the game hasn’t gone Free 2 Play, sorry to instantly destroy one of your many dreams faithful reader, but it’s better that I tell you this now rather than make you read through the whole article only to find the information I just told you in small font at the bottom of the page.

I might as well also get this out the way; there wasn’t a lot of information about Final Fantasy XIV.  There was some, but not a lot.  Although what news there was regarding the game will, I’m sure, be happily received.  No more stalling, let’s down to it!  Just make sure you buckle up first, as there are a few bumps along the way.

Final Fantasy XIV: Alpha Begins!

Let’s start with the good stuff, shall we?  We have finally been given a date for when the Final Fantasy XIV Alpha will begin.  On March 1st, those who have been accepted into the Alpha will be sent an email alerting them of their success.  The test website will then open on March 11th.  So those that do get invited will have to wait eleven days to play the game, what a tease eh?

Now what’s really interesting about this is that the Alpha will apparently be “exclusive to loyal Final Fantasy XI users”.  What exactly this means, I have no idea.  Apparently, this is just a rumour; all those that were invited to the VanaFest 2010 Event in Japan are in the Alpha.  I don’t know how true this piece of information is but it sounds like there could be some truth to this claim.

Alpha Test XIV

So let’s just clarify this, the upcoming test is not a Beta, but an Alpha.  This can give us some ideas on when the game will be released.  Normally the closed Beta is held around one to three months before the game is launched.  After this, there is normally an open beta which can last for one to four weeks.  If the game is still in the Alpha phase, then that might mean that it may have a December release date, leaving about two to five months for Alpha testing.

Not much is known about the Beta, apparently more information is going to be released soon.

New gameplay footage was also shown at the event; however none of this footage has been released outside the VanaFest.  No cameras were allowed at the event either.  There have been some rumours flying around that the attendees were shown the opening cinematic, whether or not this was the gameplay footage, or if this was shown with the new gameplay footage is unknown.

That’s about it with regards to Final Fantasy XIV.  The whole event leaves more questions than answers.  It also doesn’t help that we’re getting more information from translators who were at the event, as the information they’re giving out seems to be conflicting with some of the information we’re getting from Square Enix.

Don’t worry though, if we get more information about the Alpha/Beta/whatever, we’ll update this article.  At any rate, I guess we’ll find out what’s happening in the coming days when people get/don’t get their invites.

Final Fantasy XI: VanaFest News!!!

Moving swiftly onwards, let’s look at some of the information that was released about Final Fantasy XI, after all the VanaFest is meant to be about the first MMORPG Square Enix created.  As there is so much information I’m going to break it up into small, accessible chunks.  I’m not trying to treat you like a child my humble reader, it’s just some of the information may cause you to have a heart attack, so it’s better to give it to you in easy to eat bites.  I’m just thinking about you!

Final Fantasy XI: Level Cap Increase

Did you just faint?  No?  So you’re still with us?  Good.  This was probably one of the biggest pieces of news at VanaFest and it’s been greeted with both positive and negative reactions.  In the March update the Level cap will be raised from 75 to 99.  That’s twenty four more levels of goodness, or is it?  What has not been clarified is how some of the subjobs will work, what will happen to all of the endgame content  already in place and whether it’ll be easier to level up to level 75 from level 1. On the Official VanaFest Webpage detailing all of this information, it says:

“New camping grounds are scheduled to be added to cater to the anticipated rise in demand for experience parties. Furthermore, the redistribution of monsters in existing areas is also under consideration. An increase in maximum upgrades is being considered for existing merit point skills and attributes. Preparations are also under way for the introduction of a new type of merit point for players who have reached the new level 99 summit.”

Believe me when I say, I trust the developers with Final Fantasy XI, it’s just level 99 seems so far away!  I’m not too sure if I want to grind all the way up to that level.  Also, the question has to be asked, is this increase in level cap just something to keep players busy and to keep them subscribed whilst Square Enix bring out Final Fantasy XIV?  I personally don’t think so, but it’s something to think about.

Abyessa

Final Fantasy XI: Abyssea

Let’s move onto our next piece of information, new content for Final Fantasy XI which comes in the form of mini expansions which you have to pay for!  Sorry if I don’t sound very excited about this news.

I’m already paying a monthly fee to play Final Fantasy XI.  The reason I am being charged this monthly fee is for “service updates”.  I’m paying for new content, to keep the servers up, and to play the game.  Why the hell should I pay another fee on top of my monthly fee for content that I should be getting anyway as I’m already paying for it in the monthly fee?!  It’s completely outrageous!  What is the point in charging people $8 for a “mini expansion”?  I’m just annoyed because what am I paying my monthly fee for, if I have to pay for new content which is vital for me to get to reach the level cap.  I’m fine with paying for a fully fledged expansion pack that will offer me hours and hours of enjoyment, but after the last mini expansions Square Enix pumped out, I’m completely against paying for some half hearted piece of content that I feel I’ve already paid for!

End of rant.  Sorry about that, it just annoys me to see Square Enix milking Final Fantasy XI and ripping off consumers.  Anyway, here’s the information about the new content:

“Abyssea is a parallel world existing beside Vana’diel. A land fraught with perils, Abyssea is home to savage hordes of heretofore unseen creatures. Ferocious, towering NMs, new-look HNMs-even the garden varieties will confound would-be challengers with their unfamiliar and formidable powers. These and a whole host more await hapless adventurers with open arms and voracious maws. In Abyssea, concerns such as the over-population of battle areas and the need for large time investments will be a thing of the past. The development team is hard at work creating a world where parties can engage in rewarding battles with powerful foes and collect prized equipment with the least of fuss. The expansive realm of Abyssea will comprise several new areas which will be introduced over the course of three add-ons.”

Now there has been some speculation about the developers wanting to focus on smaller groups tackling bigger obstacles, instead of having big groups of peoples.  This line: “The development team is hard at work creating a world where parties can engage in rewarding battles with powerful foes and collect prized equipment with the least of fuss” seems to give evidence of this idea.

That’s all of the information there is about these new expansion packs, there is an Official Website for them, however no extra information is given.

Final Fantasy XI: The Future of Final Fantasy XI

We have been presented with a timeline detailing what’s going to happen in the coming year, there’s a lot on the timeline; however it should allow you to plan some of your strategies for the year ahead.  Here’s the chart:

FFXI Chart

Click the image for a larger version, or view the original version

One thing I would like to point out is that on the timeline it says that in June the “Level cap increase part 1” will take place, which means that the developers are going to be slowly increasing the level cap, instead of in just one giant go.  I know that I mentioned earlier in this article that the level cap increase process would start in March (that’s what we were told by Square Enix), and that it says on this chart (also provided by Square Enix) that the process will actually begin in June, however I’m presuming that in March they’ll provide the foundations for increasing the level cap.  On the chart there’s also a timeline of when the mini expansions will be released this should be helpful for those who need to plan out their finances.

Let’s take a look at some more very interesting pieces of new information, shall we?

Final Fantasy XI: 2010 Updates!

First up, there will be some new Wings of the Goddess missions which we have actually been given some information about:

With the San d’Orian hero Sir Ragelise B Baloumat leading the charge, the allied forces march towards the enemy’s heartland, Valdeaunia, in an attempt to beat down the Shadow Lord.  Warriors who battle through the Castle Zvahl will find themselves in the Throne Room, and will finally discover the identity of the dark figure with an imp by his side.  The repercussions of Atomos continual devour of memories will finally be shown, as a comet appears in the skies above San d’Oria.  What will the fate of Vana’Diel be?

Pretty powerful stuff isn’t it?  The Wings of the Goddess will be drawing to a close over the next few updates, with the end of storyline set to show itself in the December update.  Not only that but the Nation missions will finally come to their respectful conclusions in Summer, which will definitely give you lots to play through on those long, hot days, when you really should be outside.

Job Adjustments will also be made, and I think this is yet another thing which has players of the game worried about the future of their favourite MMORPG.  In the March version update, we’re going to see some adjustments to the Beastmaster (which should make the class much more appealing to gamers), the Summoner and the Puppetmaster.

The Summoner will be able to get two new Summons, Alexander, whose purpose is to reduce party damage, and Odin, who will use “Zantetsuken to vanquish all foes within the area of effect in one fell strike”.  If you’re using Odin and you’re up against an NM (Notorious Monster) you will instead deal damage, which will depend on how much MP you have left.

Puppetmaster

For those that use the Puppetmaster you’ll be pleased to know that the hand-to-hand combat rating will be upgraded from a C to an A, making them strong fighters in their own right.

Now these class changes aren’t so bad, I think what some players are worried about is this line from the developers: “Up until now, most job adjustments have been implemented with ease of party-forming in mind. From this point onwards, we plan to shift the focus towards ease of participation in endgame content”.  This change in method when looking at class adjustment links closely to the point made about how the developers want to shift from having bigger parties to closer, much more tightly knit gathering of friends.  It also seems to me that they may well be streamlining the whole system, and that’s why they’ll be approaching these class changes in different ways.  What I mean by “streamlining the whole system” is that they might be aiming to make it much easier to get straight to the content with a group of friends, rather than fiddle about with a high spec party, which takes a lot of time and effort.

Final Fantasy XI: Walk of the Echoes

On the timeline you may have also noticed the “Walk of the Echoes”, allow me to explain what this is.  The Walk of the Echoes is a new area to be introduced in the summer updates. This area is the wasteland of memories and time  which has plagued many a players’ curiosity in the Wings of the Goddess missions.

This new area will also hold an entrance to a new “realm” of high-end content, so that you’ll be able to level your character from 75 to 99 with ease as you face new challenges and monsters.  Walk of the Echoes will also pay an important role in the conclusion of Wings of the Goddess missions.

So basically, this area will be one of the areas that you will be visiting so that you can level up your character.  Other new areas will be available, according to Square Enix, and other familiar areas may be fiddled with to provide new challenges for those who wish to level up their avatar further.

A series of quests have also been unveiled, one particular quest series is called the “Trial of the Magians” and will be designed specifically for level 75 characters.

Now as we slowly draw this article to a close, I have some news that will be perceived by some as great, but many others will probably find this piece of news shocking and certainly won’t be celebrating it.

High Level Character FFXI

Final Fantasy XI: Server Merge

Just by looking at the above title you probably know what this news is, don’t worry I’ll give you a moment.  You okay?  Don’t worry, it’ll be fine!  Besides, it might not even be your server!  At this year’s VanaFest Square Enix announced that they will be reducing the amount of servers from twenty-four to twelve.  No date is given about when this will happen, however expect it to be sooner, rather than later.

Here’s a list of the servers to be merged:

Server Merge FFXI

Obviously there are good things and bad things that will come out of this move.  On the plus side, there will be more players on the server to party up and chill out with, on the minus side, the servers might become too over populated and you may find killing that monster for that quest slightly harder to do as you may have found someone has already defeated the monster.  I think the big question that is on everyones mind is how players with the same name on the merging servers will work out who has to create a new player name for their character.

I think that I’ve pretty much covered everything from this year’s VanaFest.  There are a few more pieces of information that came out of the event which I’ll list below for you.  I’ll try not to go into too much detail, for both your sake and mine.

Other news from VanaFest:

– New Notorious Monsters: “Even the most combat-honed adventurers can expect to have their abilities tested to the limit, so begin steeling yourself for battle today!”
– Two new rewards, furnishing (for your house) for the upcoming Feast of Swords event in May.
– A new set of formalwear will accompany this year’s Adventurer Appreciation event.
– New job specific emotes will be introduced, for example the Thief throws a smoke bomb to the floor and does some cool moves.
– A new battleground: Castle Zvahl.
– New Campaign Orbs.
– “Formidable weapons that allow the wielder to employ devastating weapon skills formerly exclusive to certain Campaign NPCs.”
– You will be able to fight against the Shadow Lord, the loot will be really awesome!
– Black Mages might be able to learn Meteor!
– Earn AF3 in Abyssea with a single party.

That’s pretty much it!  I feel like most of the above are self explanatory, not only that but not a lot of information was revealed about most of the things in the list above.

I think that it’s finally time to bring this coverage to a close!  I really hope that you have enjoyed reading this article, I’ll update it in the coming days if need be.  Thank you for reading my faithful friend!  I hope to see you soon in Vana’diel, maybe we can slay that new Notorious Monster together.  I hope I provided you with a great read, and I hope you thoroughly enjoyed it!  I’ll see you soon, I’m sure.  Happy gaming!

Holy War Review: Crusades In Our Time And Age

Holy War Review: Crusades In Our Time And Age
By: Vincent Haoson

The Crusades, in historical context, is one of Christianity’s darker points, as wars ravaged lands, and  lives all in the name of God, there have been questions about the true intent of those wars in the first place. It really boggles the mind how people would go to such lengths for the sake of religion doesn’t it?

Now, wouldn’t it be quite possible to enjoy the Crusades if you remove all the political mumbo-jumbo and just concentrate on the strategy and battles?

The creators of Holy War think so, and they have the game to prove that point.

Welcome to the Crusades Sir!

Holy War is a game that puts you in the shoes of a crusader. You either belong to the Christians, the Saracens or the Pagans. It doesn’t really matter which side you belong to as everyone starts out equally. There are no special bonuses for any of the three.

I find it fitting that the game doesn’t have any race advantage. The game relies heavily on the amount of players per religion especially in the Order battles that you can participate in as you progress through the game.

Gameplay

Holy War’s gameplay is simple. You build up your character through training the various stats you have. To train you need to get gold, which is earned through working or pillaging from other players.

To sum it up, your goal in Holy war is to become a strong soldier by building up your character through stat upgrades and equipping the best armor and weapons gold can buy.

You have Land too

The game of course is not one-sided. Meaning you not only get to attack, you also need to defend. The thing about defending from attacks is that the success of an enemies attack is based heavily on how much you have developed your land.

You start off with a patch of land with nothing on it. After investing your gold you can then develop your land into a sprawling estate. The more you develop your estate the better the chance you can fend off attacks.

Chat with your Fellow Crusaders

Holy War also has a live messaging system that’s very close to being a chat system. You can talk to anyone that is online in the game and even do trades by adding a trade link.

The messaging system gives the game a more lively feeling. At least you get to talk to other players in real time, though this is just a minor feature that is easily overlooked.

Hi ho Hi ho to work we go!

If you have finished attacking or doing whatever it is a crusader must do for their cause, you are then left to do nothing. However in Holy War you can use the time between your attack turns to work so that you can still earn gold even if you’ve used up all your attack points.

However be warned, once your character starts working, your character can not do anything else in that time. Plus, working uses real time measure, so when it says one hour it really means one hour.

Too common for its own good

Holy War is a good example of a browser based grinding game. Training your “crusader” and upgrading its stats is reminiscent of MMOs. The only difference with Holy War is that you are doing it in a browser instead using a client.

Holy War’s gameplay is not something new or innovative. The character leveling, the way your characters grow stronger and the way your character gains gold and heightens its defense has been done by other browser-based games. The only thing that separates the game from the others is the use of the Crusades as its springboard. What you get is an overused game system clothed by a different package.

Conclusion

Surprisingly, Holy Wars is a game that can really be  interesting to play if you give it enough time. That is if you are into browser based grinding games without a decent storyline. While I did mention earlier that the game is just a repackaged and overused game system it does have some merits.

One merit would be its message system. To be able to chat and trash talk or curse the player who you attacked or who handed you your butt is a nice system that gives the game a little color. As little as it may add, it does helps the game a lot.

I really can’t deny that the game does grow old after playing it for, say, a few weeks. At that point the game has nothing more for you. What happens now if you get the top items, weapons and shield? Nada, just the satisfaction of being on top of your game, and this only goes so far and it’s not even funny that when you get to that point you’ll really question why you played the game in the first place.

Holy War is a game that has novelty due to the fact that it’s based on history. As colorful as the Crusades may have been it is not really that much of an appeal to most games.

The game is more suited for casual gaming. Of course whenever holy battles or even order battles are done things do get interesting, but the thing is you get to only enjoy them when you get to a certain level.

The game is good for those who are at work or those who want to at visit something different than their social networking sites. If you are looking for something concrete in a browser game then I’d suggest you go to other games.

The Good:
– The gameplay is easy to understand
– The learning curve is not that steep
– The game tries to balance the orders out to maximize the battles

The Bad:
– The interface is too bland
– The game also adapts the link clicking system
– You can’t control your character if he goes to work leaving you twiddling your thumbs for hours on end.
