Real life MMO Monster Manual Chapter 1

Real life MMO Monster Manual Chapter 1
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

Ever had your party PWND by a boss? Ever faced vermin without the proper gadgets and weapons? Here I present the first ever “real life” MMO Monster Manual, a volume of information dedicated to helping real life raid members with the bosses and instances of their mundane lives. It’s a lot more complex out there than you think. Much like in a MMO, the real world also has its fair share of class archetypes, and just like raiding and boss battles, every class is required for a party to besolid. Here I will show you how to deal with the mobs, adds, and bosses that makes it harder for you to enjoy your favorite MMO.

Monster Name: Flying Cockroach

Abilities: Flight, Bite, Swarm, Breed, Hide, Extra life

 Monster Roach

Phase 1: Hide
In this phase the Flying Roach turns on his ‘Hide’ skill and blends with the furniture. Note that this is not the best phase to attack in, as the Roach will just dodge instantly every time you strike.

Phase 2: Wall run
This is the only vulnerable phase for the Roach. Since the Roach’s life is only 5, you can pretty much kill him with one blow. Note that his EXTRA LIFE can trigger during this event, which is why you would want the hardest-hitting character in your party to finish the job.

Phase 3: Flight
There is no turning back when this Phase starts. When the Roach gains the ability to fly, it will launch itself towards a random location. Funny, as the random location will most likely be toward you 90% of the time (LOL), resulting in a wipe.

Monster name:  Rat

Abilities: Bite, Nibble, Leptosprirosis

Monster Rat

It would be ideal for a party to have a Hunter when fighting these critters as they are easier to catch with traps. Your Hunter can also send their pet cat to kill these vermin, but the chances of  not being hurt are rather slim. The Rat carries a permanent DPS called Leptospirosis, which drains 5000 hp/s. Take care when drinking your potions in this battle as the Rat is most likely to strike when it is the least expected.

Fighting head on: It would be stupid to try and fight it head on as the Rat’s speed is that of an Epic mount. Always remember to leave this matter to the Hunter, for the only way to kill a fast monster would be through a fast snap trap.

Boss name: Mom and Dad

Abilities: Because I said So, Scream of Terror, Summon Mate, Uber Cheezy Team

Monster Mom And Dad

Dealing with this particular boss is quite tricky. Perhaps the easiest way of bringing this boss down is to not let Mom use Summon Mate or Scream of Terror as it usually summons Dad while he’s watching TV. Rogues and Assassins are quite lucky in this boss fight since they can hide when Mom hits the group with “Because I Said So”. If the Dad is summoned, the game goes into hard mode and will only result in a wipe no matter how hard you try. Paladins can use Holy Aura when the bosses use Scream of Terror. This will make them go to church, giving your party time to buff up.

Boss name: Boss

Abilities: You’re FIRED!, Extra Work!, Overtime!, Dinner with me!

Monster Boss

The Boss is one of the hardest mobs in the game. First of all, there are no patterns for you to follow, meaning players must be resilient at all times. The Boss will start by barraging you with EXTRA WORK, which you must complete in order to fizzle his’ You’re FIRED’ attack which, if completed, will most likely kill you all. There are times when the Boss hits you with Overtime so be sure to do your extra work fast. If you continue to do this, the Boss will trigger the “Dinner with Me” phase, which will be the only time for players to attack. Once the dinner realm is complete, each party member will get a temporary skill called “Ask for a raise”. If the Boss was impressed by your performance during the earlier phases, he will hand over a lot of experience and end the battle immediately.

Rare monster boss: The bitter Ex-girlfriend

Abilities: I Want You Back, Whuzzat Gurl?, Stalk

Monster Ex Girlfriend

Phase 1: I Want You Back
This phase is going to be hard for non-int-based characters. The Ex will most likely have her seduction armor on in this phase, making it hard for players to break free. No matter how hot she’s become, ALWAYS say “NO”.

Phase 2: Whuzzat Gurl?
When the Ex walks around fast while pointing and shaking her head, make sure to implement a 30 meter distance from all party members as this will trigger the Whuzzat Guirl skill. The ex will jump on the party member next to you (sometimes you) giving you a couple of DPS debuffs that hits for 4000 hp/s.

Tip: When your Ex triggers Stalk, She will most likely just walk around. The person being stalked will receive an “I’ll love you forever” message on the top portion of their screen. The one being stalked must run around and avoid the Ex at all cost, and at the same time keep his distance from the party to avoid Whuzzat Gurl. When the Ex stalks, the untargeted party members must DPS her down, as she will not feel anything when stalking you.

There’s more?

There are tons of monsters in this world, and although this seems like an analogy from enlighteners, I assure you that I only did it for the lulz. I’m sure I can come up with more guides on how to defeat the more monsters soon. The school principal, the fat cafeteria lady who gives nothing but beans, that persistent salesman in your backyard, I bet your party would do a good job when dealing with these bosses. I’m still stuck with the “Boss-boss” but my guide seems to be working well for me LOL. Tootles everyone.

Interview With A Casual Gold Farmer

Interview With A Casual Gold Farmer
By Vincent Haoson (Vincenthaoson), OnRPG Journalist

Ah, Gold Farming, the ever so familiar pair of words in the MMO industry. We’ve seen them in a lot of MMOs and hated those large groups of spammers whose sole purpose in logging into the game is to say in the trade channel “WE SELL <insert game name here> GOLD AT AFFORDABLE PRICES!”

These guys are the larger-scale gold farmers whose reason for logging in is strictly business. They’re considered large-scale because these farmers have invested a lot of money in the people they hire and the hardware they use. Let’s face it, if you want to earn big by gold farming you’d need more than just one computer and one account.

Gold Farm
Gold farm setup

The smaller-scale gold farmers on the other hand are actual gamers who want to earn a little cash through the MMOs they play. Mostly the small time gold farmers do this as a sideline and have work or school to worry about. I got a chance to talk to one such person and he was willing enough to share his story as a former gold farmer for MU Online, RF Online, Ragnarok Online and WoW.

Writer’s Note: the interviewee requested to withhold his name due to obvious reasons.

Vincent: Can you tell me your age and current work?

Anon: 23, turning 24 this year. I’m a Virtual Assistant/SEO Consultant. I do a lot of content writing, internet marketing research, niche research, social networking and social media optimization just to name a few.

Vincent: How did you start your gold farming business?

Anon: I started gold farming during my MU online days. I started with selling in-game items for real currency. I get about a hundred pesos (2 dollars) for the jewels I get which is enough to pay for six hours rental time in the café I play at.

Vincent: So you started gold farming to pay for your PC rental charges? What happened next?

Anon: Yup, after moving on from MU Online I looked for another exciting MMO. When I started playing I look for possible items that I can sell for real life currency aside from gold or in-game currency.

Gold Farmer
Players never have enough of it

Vincent: How do you do the exchange?

Anon: The transaction happens locally. I don’t do trades outside the city to avoid being scammed. If there’s a player who’s interested in buying from me I tell them to go to a café and from there we will do the exchange. It’s safer in a sense because if I got scammed I could just beat him up.

Vincent: However you also sold gold in WoW right? So how did you do business there?

Anon: Well, in WoW trade was made up of us guys in my previous company. It’s like an inside project in our company last year. I only forward the gold I have in my account to the head of the project and they’re the ones who do the selling.

Vincent: Can you explain how the WoW trade started? How did it prosper and how was it handled?

Anon: The president of our company, who was an American, saw the booming business of WoW gold selling and saw that it has income potential. He found out that there are a lot of WoW gamers in the company so he recruited us to play the retail servers. He gave us accounts and we just piloted his toons.

Vincent: How were you paid when you piloted for those WoW accounts?

Anon: Our piloting was considered overtime in the company. We got about 3-4 hours of playtime right after work so that basically explains why it’s only considered as OT.

Vincent: Was there contract between you and the company president for the piloting?

Anon: There wasn’t. It was only a verbal agreement between us and the president. Besides, we only play at our discretion so it’s up to us if we join in the sessions or not.

Vincent: Are you still gold farming in WoW? Are you still gold farming in the games you play?

Anon: I stopped playing WoW retail servers since I got fired from the company last year. I started playing on private servers for fun. As of now there are no decent MMOs that I’d like to gold farm on so I’ve been playing for fun these past few months.

Vincent: You mentioned earlier that you also used gold farm at other MMOs like Ragnarok Online. How do you do it there?

Anon: The case is different in Ragnarok Online. Unlike in WoW where its players only buy gold, Ragnarok Online’s market is both gold and items. Since I wasn’t much of a Ragnarok Online player I only farmed gold. The problem with RO is that the prices of items in-game are also so expensive that there are times when RO loads (in-game cash cards) were the only way to pay for our gold.

Vincent: So that means you don’t get a lot from gold farming?

Anon: Yep, that stories the same with my friends who also gold farm

Vincent: How do you farm in Ragnarok Online?

Anon: The process is simple; I log in, kill monsters for loot, sell the expensive loot for gold and then sell the gold for real life currency. I don’t use bots when I was still farming in RO then. I didn’t used bots because I was too lazy to look for one and set it up so everything I did in RO was done manually.

Goldfarmer Multi Boxing
Multiboxing setup for gold farming

Vincent: How do you get buyers?

Anon: RO used to have a lot of gold buyers, there were chat rooms setup for gold buying even so it was easy for me then to find a gold buyer.

Vincent: So basically you just farmed on games that you wanted to play?

Anon: Yes, I wanted to enjoy my time in-game too.

Vincent: So what was the reason why you farmed gold?

Anon: I started gold farming before because I had a measly allowance so I looked for a different means to keep on playing. Hence I started selling gold with real-life currency so that I can play the MMOs I wanted to play.

Vincent: Did it ever occur to you the repercussions of what you did to the in-game economies of the games you played?

Anon: Yep, I knew then that farming would really destroy the game economy, like how piracy affects the music/movie industry, but I didn’t think about it so much because during my MU Online days I didn’t feel the effects of farming so much. However things changed when I played RF, the item prices skyrocketed and the purchasing power of the game’s currency was really low.

Vincent: So do you think you’d continue gold farming?

Anon: Most likely I won’t unless I get into the mood of selling gold again, but unlike before I won’t take gold farming too seriously now. Work and my girlfriend take priority so I don’t think I can really concentrate on gold farming.

In Conclusion

As you can see, a player’s drive to gold farm is rooted more on personal reasons rather than just to earn money through playing MMOs. Small-time gold farmers won’t really stay for long due to various reasons however the effects of their actions will really leave a mark in the game’s economy long after they have done their small business.

The one question that was left was if it was all worth it. The only answer Anon gave me was a laughing smiley and that ended our little discussion.

Fall of Empires Review: Beyond First Impressions

Fall of Empires Review: Beyond First Impressions
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

They say first impressions last. If that were true then this game, Fall of Empires would suck tremendously. Fall of Empires is a MMO Web Browser Game that focuses on an all out war between the several of the ancient empires in history. The interface was probably the first thing I noticed as it was designed a bit poorly, rather like that of other static websites during the 90s.

You know what it’s like when you buy a book with a plain white cover that says “Woodland Creatures”? Sounds like it would be something you’ll end up using in school; however, they did say that you should never judge a book by its cover, so let’s at least give this game the benefit of the doubt. One good thing though is that the game creates custom campaigns for a non-linear feel. Quite impressive wouldn’t you say? Graphics aren’t everything, nor do they justify how good a game is (in MMOs that is). Let’s rush in and see what happens shall we?

Starting up

There isn’t really that much to think about when starting a character in Fall of Empires, to be honest it’s rather simplistic. You’ll be choosing between an array of empires that have made their mark in history. The Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Vikings, Celts, and of course… the Japanese (wonder where the Chinese went). Each empire has their own special trait that allows them to excel in their respective field. These traits weren’t really developed when I started the game but the tutorialsaid they were there, so let’s just go with that. The game is turn based, meaning you’ll be supplied with a number of steps, money, and soldiers per turn. Each turn’s duration is around 20 minutes. The object of the game is very simple-out live and outlast your enemies (those would be the other players). There’s not many players online but I’m sure you won’t mind as text based games like this rarely demands more than 100 players.

It is very hard to win in this game, as being number 1 is the only way to do so. There is no second place here my friend. I mean, come on! It’s war! Surely it’s all just King of the Hill.

Some problems

Okay, it’s already bad that the interface looks like my elementary school IT project but some of the links seem to log you out on random occasions. Well maintained is it? I’m not saying anything.

Stats
Character stats

How to become the King of the Hill

Don’t worry if you’re about to start late, for much like any other MMO everything slows down and reaches a certain limitations. This isn’t really the type that measures you for the amount of kills you’ve attained throughout the years but rather the undeniable force of your established army. I don’t really know what to call them but the character sheet looks like MMO stats so let’s just be stereotypical and use that. Your stats page will have ranks representing how much that specific stat rocks or sucks within the boundaries of the game. Good luck though if you’re on a quest to make them all rank one, that means that you’ll be on top of the food chain.

Don’t be a push over

Defense should probably be on your priority list as these ruthless killers are bound to pick on you upon your arrival. Buildings will be available, giving your troops a better chance of survival. You can also purchase towers and that will help increase your Empire’s defense rate.

Fall of Empires Building
Buildings

ATTAAAAAAAACK!!! LEAVE NO MAN ALIVE!!!

Attacking is very simple in this game. In order to wreak havoc on your enemy’s fortress, you must first click on the attack option on the top left portion of your screen. This will bring up the attack menu in the center of the screen. After clicking attack (again), you’ll be taken to the ranking board where you must choose your next victim. Fairly easy but it gets tricky since as a newbie, it’d be best for you to start small so scroll further and try to find a rather weak opponent to boost your stuff :P.

The Interface

As I mentioned earlier, the interface is rather dull and simple for a site meant to be a game. The game really lacks visuals. Geez, it wouldn’t hurt to put in a couple of pictures to further enhance a unit’s description you know. They do have this interactive option bar on the top left portion of the screen, which changes the menu in the middle, depending on which option you choose. Kinda funny though since the words tend to go over the wood themed border. Anyway, I didn’t say that it didn’t have pictures-some of the buildings do have images that are pretty hard to comprehend but hey, it’s a start. It also has a link leading to the forums where players can exchange strategies and so forth. For those who are too lazy to post however, the game was gracious enough to provide a chat bar as a faster way of interaction.

Battle Interactions

The verdict

Not bad, but that doesn’t say it was good either. Perhaps I’m just too much of a visual person but the main fact that it lacks visuals makes it nothing but a whole pile of text (that goes over into the margin LOL). Yeah, I do know that it IS a text-based game, but do they really have tobe that literal? Well, the mechanics aren’t really that bad. You are free to create buildings, units, and other defensive structures. I guess you’ll need a bit of an imagination to actually imagine the war; otherwise, this’ll be the same as clicking the messages in your Facebook account. Not my fault if that’s fun for you LOL.

The good:
– Community
– Campaigns baby!
– Well maintained (I think)
– Tons of options
– Competitive

The bad:
– Lack of visuals
– Bad looking interface
– It feels too raw (like we’re playing beta or something).

Why Final Fantasy XIV Will Fail

Blog: Why Final Fantasy XIV Will Fail
By Joshua Temblett (Dontkillmydreams), OnRPG Journalist

Note: the opinions within this blog article are not necessarily the opinions of OnRPG.com.

Final Fantasy XIV’s success or failure is dependent on one thing, and one thing only. Sadly enough this has nothing to do with the depth and variety of the game play, its visual style or storyline. No, instead Square Enix’s new MMORPG will either soar, or die at the bottom of the charts depending on its marketing. Unfortunately Final Fantasy XIV’s marketing is in shambles. I’ll explain why.

Yoichi Wada (CEO of Square Enix) claims that he wanted to appeal to a more global market but Final Fantasy XIV has been primarily aimed at the Japanese market. Perhaps it’s because Square Enix believes that this type of MMORPG would not appeal to the Western market. That’s a ridiculous thought given the success of their original MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI, in both America and Europe.

FFXIV

Square Enix seem to believe they should tackle the two regions, East and West, at two completely different points in time. For example, maybe Square Enix feels that it should appeal to the Japanese market well in advance of the release date and focus more on appealing to the European and American market once they’re closer to the global release date. Could it be that the marketing team feel that by doing so, they are able to control the hype more efficiently in Europe and America?

Some Comparisons

To be honest, I would like to think that Square Enix has some master plan for marketing Final Fantasy XIV to Europe and America, however I doubt this is the case. Even if they are intending to do this, their strategy is failing and definitely backfiring. By releasing a plethora of information to Japanese news outlets and not to the European and American markets, Square Enix is demonstrating that the company doesn’t care about their Western consumers and that they only want to focus on their Japanese audience, at least this is the image that they’re sending to the future players of Final Fantasy XIV.

Why Square Enix would focus on just appealing to the Japanese gamer doesn’t make sense to me as the Japanese market is a complete mess. In 2009 the Japanese Gaming Market shrank by 6.9%, roughly $5,828,994,686 with the best selling game in the region being Dragon Quest IX, which sold 4,100,968 million units. This game was ironically created by Square Enix.

The best selling game in the European region was Wii Sports Resort, which sold a whopping 5,566,488 million units. The best selling game in America was (shock!) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which sold 6,048,611 million units. Please note that I ignored Wii Sports whilst talking about best selling games because a copy is given free with every Nintendo Wii purchase. I don’t think I need to explain any further, do I? The point is that both Europe and America have a stronger presence in the gaming market than Japan.

There is no point in focusing primarily on a Japanese market and ignoring Europe and America. Perhaps Square Enix believe that there isn’t a demand for Japanese games in Europe and America, however we know this is not the case as Final Fantasy XIII (FFXIII) has sold very well. Consider the game was released not even a month ago, it has already acuminated 1 million sales in America and roughly 800,000 in Europe, and that’s just for the PlayStation 3. On the Xbox 360, the game has sold roughly 1.14 million, in both America and Europe.

FFXIII

If you do not trust these figures, then we can tell that Final Fantasy XIII sold well in America and Europe, just by looking at the official software charts from the region. For example in its first week FFXIII was on top of the UK charts.

Exclusive to Japan

All of this information shows us that there is indeed a market for Japanese Role Playing Games. Naturally, because of World of Warcraft’s success, we also know that there is certainly a market for MMORPGs.

Why then is Square Enix ignoring this huge American and European market? Why do fan sites have to translate Final Fantasy XIV news from Japanese to English? Why isn’t Square Enix announcing FFXIV news globally, instead of just to Japan first?

These are the questions that baffle me. Surely it isn’t too hard for Square Enix to release all news regarding Final Fantasy XIV at the same time globally. This would show that not only does the company have a respect for all regions, it would also show that the developers care about everyone and aren’t just going to focus on and listen to their own country.

For a company that is trying to appeal to a more global market, Square Enix appears to be showing a complete disregard for anyone who is outside the Japanese market. It wouldn’t be that hard to announce Final Fantasy XIV news to Edge in England, or PlayStation Official Magazine in America, at the same time they announce this news to Japanese magazine Famitsu.

FFXIV Number

Japanese games magazines like Famitsu, have also had access to the Final Fantasy XIV Alpha test, and they have been allowed to produce and write articles on the subject. Why hasn’t Square Enix done the same for American or European publications?

No Hope for FFXIV

The reason why Final Fantasy XIV’s marketing is failing is because Square Enix has been lazy. Getting information to people now is easier than ever, with the internet, as I’ve mentioned many times throughout this article, it really wouldn’t be that hard for Square to officially announce news regarding Final Fantasy XIV globally.

In order for Final Fantasy XIV to be a success, Square Enix need to start appealing to the Western demographic by giving out information to these markets at the same time as the Japanese markets. If your game isn’t in the forefront of gamers’ minds, then your marketing has failed. Square Enix can, and should, do much more to appeal to the hardcore audience who are reading every fan translated piece of news from Japan.

It is only through extensive global marketing that Final Fantasy XIV will be a total success. I wish it well. Show your consumers that you not only care about them, but that you respect them, Square Enix.
