Evony. The Good, The Bad and The “I Need More Lumber”

Evony. The Good, The Bad and The “I Need More Lumber”
By Jonathan (Ardua) Doyle, OnRPG Journalist

Hands up who hasn’t heard of Evony. For the maybe two and half of you who just raised your hands, where have you been? Like it or loathe it, Evony has made itself known to the internet at large and boy has there been an impact.

That said, of all of you who know Evony is out there, how many of you know anything about it? I certainly had no idea about the game myself. Sure there has been negative press, sure there have been jokes a plenty aimed at it but for all that, I still knew nothing about the game itself.

Fortunately the Powers that Be sent me off to review the game and I was also lucky enough to be given a tour of it by VP of Operations Walt Yarbrough, his right hand man Darold Higa and Andy Rosenberg.

Go Play My Lord

Did you just call me “My Lord”? …Shut up and write

First and foremost, Walt and Darold if you’re reading this thank you very much for the tour. It was an eye-opener. You see, Evony it turns out, is rather like a browser game I used to play pretty heavily. Sure there is more to it with Evony but in heading off to review, I may have found yet another game to play with. …I wonder if I can trade stone for more hours in the day…

Evony My Lord
Welcome, your majesty!

So the game! Evony Age II is an update to the original Evony game. Primarily it is an update dealing with the concerns of the original players. Tweaking, adding and generally giving the game a bit of a boost. For any one reading planning on giving it a peek, there’s a tutorial now with a voice over that will guide you gently through the basic set up of a city. Upgrading? Oh she takes care of that, items, buildings, the daily prize wheel, all of it. If like me you enjoy RTS games and don’t jump right into the skirmish settings where the whole tech tree is open, the Evony tutorial is a blessing. A wonderful little touch that I thought was quite clever is the fact that you don’t have to sign up for the game until the end of the tutorial.

The curious amongst you can go and have a quick look at the game, granted with a generic name for your lord and city. Fret not though, for there are quests! More on them later but suffice to say, changing your name to something you want actually nets you rewards.

Age II: Age Harder

Age I of Evony had a basic quest system. This has been expanded and improved for Age II and linked very nicely with the beginners’ tutorial. The majority of the quests are not repeatable and are essentially aimed at getting you set up. Every quest you finish brings you closer to the end game and the real meat of Evony, rewarding you along the way.

In a way it’s almost like playing on rails, subtle rails though. Each quest reward and each building pre-requisite is designed to ensure that you create a proper resource base in your home city so that when you go to war, you stand a chance.

Giving you a boost along the way are a host of newbie bonuses like a 7 day protection against attacking or, importantly, being attacked. A newbie box of goodies with a second awaits you when you get your town hall up to level 3. Using Facebook connect nets you more rewards as well as helping your friends help you if they play as well.

Evony Facebook
Evony using Facebook Connect

To get from a completely fresh plot of ground to the massive military manoeuvres of the end game should take you (without spending a single penny/cent on RMT) three or four weeks. You get a week of beginners’ protection and after that can try out armies on nearby NPC plots without necessarily attracting the attention of an alliance. From the first “Hello My Lord” to the first casualty you suffer, you are guided along to a prime starting position.

The Art of War

Endgame Endgame Endgame. Where every one wants to be. It’s like New York but in this case New York is the kiddies pool. The world of Evony has massive battles, massive grudges and massive alliances. With alliances being able to hold 100 members, each member able to hold multiple cities and multiple armies, the amount of forces in play can go from tiny skirmish level scuffles to devastating tsunamis of incoming forces.

Not everything is about the alliance though, despite the fact that they surely help. There is plenty of opportunity to play Evony solo and only ever really deal with NPCs. You can close your gates to try weather an attack. You can put out contracts on other players if you yourself don’t want to go up against them. You can even teleport your city somewhere else if you want to get a better (if random) position.

Evony Item Shop
The item shop in Evony

That said, the real spice of Evony comes in real time. Skills, research, upgrades, building and attacks all have a down to the second time value. Attacking the NPC next door may be a 5 minute round trip, quick pop next door for some slaughter and cookies. That’s real time on and offline. It’s going to take two hours to make that hall? No problem. It means two hours unless you apply an item to speed things along. You can concentrate on other things if you want or simply just chat with folks in the game.

Attacking with your friends or trying to defend is where I want to be and where I am aiming to get. To that end I will be remaking an account to properly play (and if I am honest, try hunt down the Evony guys and throw myself at their walls for lawls). Why is that? Well… the game Evony reminds me of and what I have been guided through shows a vast and engaging endgame full of tactics, tricks and at times, nail biting terror. To fully explain all that lays there at the end game would likely triple this article.

Evony Growing City

The Elephant in The Room

Before I sign off I may as well get this out of the way. After all I know some of you are likely surprised by my positive tone regarding Evony. I know I was. I had seen the ads, formed an opinion and I was pleasantly surprised on seeing the game. Even the guys themselves are worthy of comment. Evony is being made and maintained by good proper talent. People who have worked for Mythic, EA, Turbine and more. The ads? Well I asked the guys about those. Part of it I know was due to outsourcing the ad campaign, but since Age II they’re promoting the game.

The guys were fine with me asking about the ads and pointed out, rightly so, if nothing else Evony has made an impact. Why else would so many other f2p games be copying the advertising style (I’m looking at you Allods) or otherwise referencing Evony? Win-win for them then. As they said themselves, it’s the job of the advertising arm to get people to the game and up to the game play to keep them there. If nothing else, as April 1st showed, they have a sense of humour about it all having parodied themselves.

Are they right to be confident? I think yes. If I’m a typical user of the internet Evony has gone from being that game whose ads interrupted my looking at lolcats to being that game I’m looking to crack open and play its socks off.

In the end there may not be a pretty girl waiting for you in Evony, but I will be. Bring it on!

Pros:
Improving game play.
– Better tutorial than before.
– Vast and exciting endgame.

Cons:
– Some may find the time requirement to reach endgame a block.
– Occasional spam bots showing up (but swiftly dealt with).
– No boo….wait my editor will smack me. The normal lure of a Cash store (if you count that as a negative).

[Editor’s note: I did smack him]

Vikings of Thule

Vikings of Thule is a casual Massively Multiplayer Online game where participants strive to become strong and respected Viking chiefs in Iceland.

The objective is to become one of the 39 authorities that rule the land and hold a vote on its parliament. To achieve this, players need to employ all their wits and brawn. You’ll have the chance to face your enemies in live, animated battles, earn the respect of your followers, control your legion of henchmen and berserkers, buy and market exquisite items and tame Iceland’s mythical beasts, the wights.

MMO Things You Wish Were Real

MMO Things You Wish Were Real
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

Due to the many limitations of reality, one can’t help but want to access things born in the world of fantasy. This brings people to new adventures such as LARP (Live Action Role Playing), but what if you could actually design life your own way by picking an array of MMO features to customize it? Are you sure you want to ride that bike for the rest of your life? You have a car you say? What about an epic black dragon mount (would save you gas)? Enclosed is a list of things that would definitely make life more awesome. The world needs a lot of adjustments, and gamers have a lot of ideas what they should be. Join me as we check MMOs for features that could be awesome in real life.

1) Elves

Elves are always hotter than humans (and more stylish). You can probably tell why girls enjoy picking elves over all the other races. They can also use magic and are normally trained combatants. Perfect girl/boyfriend? I’m not much of a Lord of the Rings fan, but it would seem that Orlando bloomed (pun intended) among women after attaining the role of Legolas. Now that I think about it, Elves are normally the most populated race in almost MMOs, so why not give the world what they want?

Wish Elves
A little too perfect perhaps?

2) Magic

If everyone had the right and ability to learn magic, then we wouldn’t look like fools watching David Blaine’s fraud magic tricks now would we? Magic is helpful in almost everyway. Ever wonder what it would be like to use Magic for domestic purposes? Self-cleaning brooms would rock. It doesn’t really have to be channeled magic per se. What about teleportation? Wouldn’t it be grand to travel across the world without having to succumb to the prices of the airlines? Food can also be conjured through magic, and would probably be the only cure for global famine. There’s also the summon succubus skill that….. okay… I’ll shut up now…

Wish Magic
Bzzzoomm!

3) Mounts

If mounts can really fly that high, run that fast, and still be kept in the comforts of your pocket (like most mounts in MMOs do), then parking wouldn’t be such a pain. They’re low maintenance creatures, who don’t even have to be fed in order to function properly, making them the ideal form of transportation (next to teleportation). When was the last time your online persona had to worry about parking?

WIsh Mount
Does it come in black?

4) Chickens (cowards) of the MMO world

You know what’s better than a blacksmith asking you to get him stuff to make your sword plus extra cash? A coward, that’s what. Quest cowards are found in almost every MMO. These are the fools who are too scared to either deliver a letter or tell someone something straight. If you’re wondering why the world would be better this way, these chickens actually pay you tons of gold to deliver messages. One more thing is that the person you need to find is normally 3 blocks away from the guy. If you’re looking for easy money, then this is the best freelance job ever.

5) Stat Items and Socketed Ones

Why settle for school when you can just wear your +7 intelligence robe to do your accounting? This could work in a whole variety of ways. STR makes you fight better, DEX allows you to actually dodge accordingly, maybe even hide from your parents when you’re busy playing a game. Don’t mess with me in football practice man! My helmet gives me +4 VIT, so you won’t be able to take me down that easily.

Enchants
+5 Impress Girls Plx

6) Enchantments

With the presence of stat items and socketed stuff, you can always have your normal gear enchanted to create your very own unique tier gear. I mean what if you can enchant your pen to make you write faster, or maybe your shoes to make you jump higher? We’re all stuck in this not so diverse world, where everyone is bound by the laws of physics. It wouldn’t hurt to get a few extra jumps when playing basketball. Enchantments (much like in games) are not only applied to items, but players as well. These are mostly known as buffs in the MMO slang. Geez, how I wish I could get that Blessing of Kings before work.

7) Potions and Scrolls

Tired? Why consume your Red Bull when you can have a stamina potion that keeps you alive and running for more than 24 hours? HP potions can also heal you of your injuries as well as abnormal stats. Perhaps the best item in this category would be the revive scroll… I DON’T FEAR DEATH! I HAVE THE SCROLL! I mean come on! Flasks of liquid that keep you from dying for 50 copper a piece (probably a dollar in the stock market lol)?

Magic Potion
Only for the most dire moments

8) Reset

Perhaps the most useful MMO feature that SHOULD be implemented in real life is the stat reset feature. We’ve all made mistakes, and some of them we are unable to learn from. There are cases when we actually get lost when leveling ourselves in real life. Some put too much INT, some put too much STR, and most just increases LUK. It wouldn’t hurt to have this feature as the world would most likely be a better place when we at least have one measly stat reset in a lifetime.

Back to Reality

If only life had its fair share of patches and updates that gives way to new content. Will cars ever fly? The closest thing we will ever get to an epic flying mount would probably be a flying DeLorean. Life may be absurd at times, but the happiness we feel when playing these games would most likely lessen after experiencing the same in real life. Games are here to take us away, and if the features are found in real life, then we would probably have games based on the lives we live today.

Navyfield Review: Boom Go the Cannons

Navyfield Review: Boom Go the Cannons
By Vincent Haoson, OnRPG Journalist

Out of the various titles I’ve played since I started out playing videogames there has been one game theme that has been my favorite and has been on top of my priority list of things to “look out for” in the MMO scene.

That’s why when I heard there’s a ship-themed battle MMO out I jumped at it and wanted to experience it immediately.

Ships Ahoy!

Navyfield is an online game that puts you in the captain’s chair of your own battle ship. You start off with the smallest ship available and a decent amount of crew. You then move along the ranks through various battles and can then upgrade your ship to different classes and types that suit your fighting style.

Battle Channel

Gameplay

The game plays a lot like an RTSMMO. The interchange between players is fast and spontaneous. This interplay between real-time action and battle ships really bodes well to the game’s overall appeal.

It’s like you are in an actual sea battle and instead of being just a spectator your smack dab in the middle of the action, well, that is until your ship gets sunk.

Controls

The game’s controls are slow and awkward. Normally, this does not bode well for an action game however it is excusable for Navyfield. The game tries to simulate actual battleship battles and the controls complete that feel.

Heat of Battle

The game’s controls make you feel like your steering a big chunk of metal and that’s what you are actually steering. This is one of the game’s finer points because I believe if Navyfield had more arcade-like controls this game would go down the drain fast.

Ships

Navyfield has a huge library of ships you can use. Also, the types of ships you can upgrade to in Navyfield are actual ships from the different navies present in the game. I liked the variation and the use of actual in the game. The use of actual ships can really fill in the cravings of any battleship fan.

The varying types of ships in the game also add to the game’s challenging nature because it pushes you to be able to prepare for the battles ahead. Each ship has its own strengths and weaknesses and suits almost any kind of fighting style a player may want to use.

Ships Battle Prep

The game also has a very intricate ship tree system where you can see how you ship branches out,  allowing  you to plan ahead. This gives you the proper encouragement and allows you to set goals in your game which would lead you to keep on coming back.

The ships you use in Navyfield are also customizable in terms of armor, targeting system and the engine it uses.  I liked the customization system because everything is reliant on how much your ship can hold. This serves as a logical limiting factor that promotes critical thinking for players on how to maximize their ships capabilities.

Sailors

Of course what would a battleship be without its crew? Navyfield also gives you the choice as to what kind of sailors you can choose for your ship. The sailors you get have their own stats and level, which improves in every battle you participate in.

You can also have sailors from the different countries that are part of the game, having a sailor for one nation allows you to enter the port of that country and provides you with upgrades and armaments that are exclusive to that country.

Navyfield Crew
Ship’s Crew

Sailors are not permanent however and they could disappear if you don’t pay attention. This happened to me after I participated in a battle and I found my shipyard empty of my sailors and had to get a new crew.

Nations

Navyfield has the Japan, U.S., U.K., Germany and Neutral navies in their disposal. They are part of the overall game in terms of the ships and sailors and choosing which side to be affiliated with determines your overall battle plan.

Each nation has its own strengths and weakness that you can use to your advantage in battle. Think of it as race specialty in other games. However, what I liked about the nation system in the game is there is no such thing as an overpowered nation. One weakness or another often offsets the nation bonuses and the only way for players to get over such things is through the mix of skill and proper pre-battle planning.

Battles

Navyfield is first and foremost a PVP centered game. Its quests are there to guide you along the game’s basics and that’s that. After getting through the basics it’s one battle after another.

I liked Navyfield’s way of fostering huge battles and eliminates the trouble of going through various quests just to be able to play decently in the game. Of course the problem with this is that the game would be really boring if you are of the single player type.

Navyfield Armor
Armor upgrades for larger opponents

The battles in Navyfield feel like those naval battle scenes in the war movies you watch on the big screen. The more participants there are the bigger and better the battles are. You have to actually lower the volume on your speakers or headset in cases like this because the explosions really hurt your ears, but then this is the good type of hurting because the explosions help you feel the damage you inflict on other ships.

I must say that the battles in Navyfield are the core essence of the game. It would be pointless in my opinion if you have a battleship game that does not promote battles. Personally I like blowing things up and Navyfield has enough to last me for a while.

Conclusion

Navyfield has met my expectations down to the dot. The gameplay is solid, the controls simulate perfectly how a ship has to move through the water and the battles are big enough to fulfill my battleship blasting cravings.

The game’s graphics are also good enough to be at par with other battleship themed games out there, plus it has enough people within it ranks to allow epic sea battles to happen. If you’re a person who is a fan of battleships and wants to be at the helm of one, Navyfield is the game for you.

Pros:
– The controls simulate perfectly how a ship moves over water
– The battles are epic
– The game has a huge library in terms of the ships

Cons:
– Not enough quests for solo gaming
– You can get overwhelmed in battles easily if you don’t know what your doing
– The sounds have to be turned down if the battles get too intense

Snail Games USA: The Inside Story

Snail Games USA: The Inside Story
By Vincent Haoson, OnRPG Journalist

Snail Games USA (SG USA), the US branch of China based game developer Snail Games has officially opened its office in Playa del Rey, Los Angeles. We were given a chance to have a chat with CEO Scott Miller (no he’s not the Scott Miller of 3D Realms, the developers of Duke Nukem Forever mind you) who was more than willing to share not only the lowdown on Snail Games USA, but I was able to get him to spill a little something about himself as well.

Snail Game USA’s Role

I was able to ask Miller about the primary function of the company aside from releasing games for the North America and Latin America audience as stated from their site. He said that the company is also helping out in directing the westernization of the products (the games). All the games SG USA will be releasing have the domestic Chinese in mind because the games come from the parent company in China.

“Sometimes it’s as simple (westernization) changing the speed of how fast the heroes run on Heroes of Gaia for example,” says, Miller.

The company is also handling the business and licensing of the games they have. One example of the game they’re handling is Heroes of Gaia, which is being licensed through multiple partners. They also handle the marketing and community management of their games.

“Marketing in China is significantly different than over here in the west. Over there they have a kind of an AOL model. Over there people don’t go to news sites, they go to the providers for their game information” shares, Miller. “So they don’t have the same marketing presence or press presence that we have here” he continues.

The Difficulty of Westernization

After hearing that SG USA is also handling the westernization of the Chinese games, I asked about the difficulty of the tasks they have in this process. We all know that there are in fact differences in the eastern and western cultures so I assumed that this was a hard issue for the people at SG USA.

“I wouldn’t say that it’s a walk in the park, but at the same time Snail China is extremely supportive in our efforts to westernize. They are very committed to a worldwide presence, they recently opened their office at Russia, and they have partners in pretty much in every country worldwide who they have been licensing games to for many years,” according to Miller.

Snail Games Office
The new offices of Snail Games

He adds, “It’s always a challenge when you have competing interest because they have to decide where the resources go, because there’s only so many hours in a day and so many people. Even Snail China has a staff of over a thousand and that means they have a lot of stuff going on. It’s not something that you can just snap your fingers and have a westernized version of a game in a day or two. It takes a significant amount of time and effort.”

Miller’s actual experience in handling a game in terms of westernizing is Heroes of Gaia, which was launched a week or two after he started working in SG USA. However, due to the timing, he had a limited influence on how the game was westernized.

“For Heroes of Gaia, we had been giving suggestions and slowly transitioning from being run in China to sort of being run in the US as a partnership between China and US. We’re hoping that our next game (Ministry of War) will have a little bit better chance in the westernization of the game,” shares Miller.

Partners

I asked about the problems in terms of other companies also providing games SG USA has. For example, GPotato and Kongregate have their own versions of the game Heroes of Gaia. I wondered if it would be conflicting with SG USA.

“In some ways yes and in some ways no, this is how the model is done in China. In some ways that can cause some issues when players can’t find where their friends are playing on what particular server. In time though, when you add additional publishers, you add large communities” answers Miller,

“We wouldn’t get that community if we were to run it ourselves, so licensing has to be done in a balanced way, so you don’t compete too much on the open market, but you can get people playing the game. We’re actively looking at how and where we do licensing and making sure that it actually works in the US” he adds.

Games and plans for the company’s future

Snail Games USA currently has Heroes of Gaia, which has recently had a content update. They will also be releasing Ministry of War that’s in closed beta and will start by May. The beta test will start as an invite only CBT then through beta key giveaways and contests.

Ministry of War is a client-based MMORTS game that has some elements of Heroes of Gaia infused to it. It has four person combat so you can control units on a larger map and four different people can go in on different scenarios.

Other games that SG USA will be releasing within the year are Throne of Fire, a niche- story book PvP kind of game. There has been little info about the game because the company is still keeping things under wraps. They’re also going to release a martial arts themed game titled Wu Shu, the game has been under development for four years now and the team grew from 200 developers to 300 and Miller promises that it’s not a typical martial arts game.

Brand New Snail Games Office
Brand new office

Currently, SG USA has fact a few games out such as the robot-themed game, Age of Armor, rhythm and dance game, 5street, the pirate themed game, Voyage of Century which are all licensed under third party partners but are being run in their office.

The Company

During the interview, I was able to poke around the office at SG USA. Miller told me that the company had a specific motto because the people in SG USA were plainly having fun. The office scenario wasn’t stifling and serious and the people in SG USA can just go nuts and have fun (totally different from the company I used to work for, game operations company here in the country).

He jokingly shared a story that chronicled how the office “zombie” theme came out. Yes, I’m not kidding, SG USA has in fact incorporated the zombie apocalypse theme in the office. Their first-aid kit even had a zombie survival guide. Even without a specific motto SG USA seems to be working well without it.

Heroes in the Sky is dog fighting at its finest; cannon fires, machine gun blasts, missiles, and bombs flood the skies as up to 16 players shoot it out for air superiority!  If that isn’t enough, players will soar across the sky with WWII war planes, and if they’re lucky with modern planes too!  Cities to bomb, boats to sink, blimps to burst, and fighters to be torn asunder — all this and more unfold as players compete to become the top Ace in Heroes in the Sky.

The upcoming free-to-play game will feature fast paced aerial combat that embodies the intense danger akin to WWII dogfights.  In Occupational War Game Mode, players will recreate critical battles of the European and Pacific front complete with WWII and modern planes to help their side take control as they experience epic battles across the history of WWII from both sides!  Players will find an easy-to-use upgrade system to help tweak planes and become the ultimate airborne marauder along with additional modifications that will allow players to, not only jam the electronics of their opponent, but also let them keep their own engines cool during boosts.  Heroes in the Sky will give players a chance to relive history as they fly dozens of planes from WWII- both experimental and battle hardened –  that can be customized to meet their own creative standards.

World of Tanks Clans Europe

Control over a province will let a clan acquire both monetary revenues and in-game benefits through unlocking special models of tanks and types of ammunition. In case of need a clan may resort to the help of Mercenaries acting as freelance warriors.

“We are not going to reinvent the wheel with the Clan Wars,” – says Nick Katselapov, producer of World of Tanks, – “we are trying to introduce a deep strategic layer into the game by adding<=”” font=””>blend of our own innovative ideas and features from such timeless videogame classics as Civilization or Total War series with comprehensive trade relations and economy, well-thought-out diplomatic system and immersive inter-clan warfare. However, unlike traditional strategy games, in World of Tanks the way of your clan to global superiority will be paved with myriads of online battles against hundreds of other teams and thousands of real people, not just AI controlled bots. This will definitely inject extra thrill and fun into the game making every combat for a province a last-ditch fight.”
