Zodiac Online Review: Cool… I Think

Zodiac Online Review: Cool… I Think
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

Geez! Talk about lacking ideas. Nah, just kidding! Zodiac online is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) that deals with ancient Chinese mythology (or at least a version of it). The story revolves around the arrival of doomsday (possibly an apocalyptic prophecy) and about the twelve eastern constellations who are hell-bent on stopping the catastrophe. Zodiac online is basically the same MMO we know and love, only with a different perspective and a less stereotypical storyline (YES! NO ORCS AND ELVES HERE FOLKS!).

The concept is also a bit different as far as character creation and progression are concerned but we’ll get to that as we go further with our review. The game is actually pretty cute, with “chibified” (small dimension) characters that are sure to make you go “aww”. The game is actually one of the best 2d MMOs I’ve seen so far, kind of like a better version of Ragnarok online when it comes to its nicely done visuals. So aside from the Zodiacs and horoscopes, what separates this game from other 2d games? Is its visual advantage over its 2d brethren the only thing that makes it special? Yeah I know, the Logo is actually pretty catchy but there has to be something there.

Zodiac Online Story
Storyline in Zodiac Online

Starting Up

One of the first things you’ll probably notice would be the rather unusual character selection screen. Honestly, the design makes it look more like a fighting game than an MMO. One thing you have to know is that there are no classes in Zodiac Online. The character selection screen is only there to verify which path you would like to take. Yes, you will have a lot of unique features at your disposal at first (like your starting statsand stuff) but everything is available for everyone to learn. What separates you from the rest however is how much you’ll progress on your own path. The game uses the aptitude system (stats bar) so I guess there’s no need to explain that part. Each constellation or Zodiac has its own specialty. It doesn’t mean that they have exclusive skills, but the way they excel in their own specialty is beyond the rest. There are no class restrictions so if you want a fire mage that does extra ice damage then go for it! A healer that deals melee damage? Why not! The possibilities are endless whichmakes character creation really fun for those who enjoy experimenting on builds.

Zodiac Online Item Mall
Experiment with skills

Who is that POKEMON?!

Perhaps one of the best features in this game would be the Pet system. I sort of remember the same mechanics in Shin Megami Tensei Online but this one’s a bit more tame (in terms of headaches). Pets, much like in other MMOs are your eternal party members. There are a lot of reasons why players should get pets, and a higher rate of survival would probably be enough to convince anyone. The evolution is just amazing as your pets can transform into stronger beings when they turn into eggs. With a few talismans for luck and a bunch of other stuff for MORE LUCK (lol), your pet can turn into the ultimate killing machine.

Questing

Well, I suppose that takes care of the grinding factor. Renown Quests, as they call them let players gain double the experience and a bit of cash when doing their first 20 quests of the day. You can take as many quests as you can but do but only the first 20 give double exp and gold. After a mouthful of rewards, it’s back to your average x1 rate (Boo). Hmm, the whole idea is probably similar to the Daily quest routine of World of Warcraft. It does pay well really, but gets kind of old after continuous repetition (I mean come on… can you stand doing the same old thing over and over again?). Questing in this game isn’t the typical “Kill this monster and I give you money” routine. To be honest, you’ll be surprised at how diverse the quest objectives are. Courier missions, kill and retrieve, crafting tasks, you’ll find a lot of those here.

Zodiac Online Event

Graphics and Interface

Superb would be a good description for Zodiac Online’s visuals. Here you have a pimped up 2d world with cutesy characters that are exquisitely armed in combat. The details are amazing (of course counting that it’s 2d) with anime drawn characters (the Zodiacs) that look very much different from each another. I wasn’t really kidding when I said it was like Ragnarok online on steroids. Here you have an isometric birds eye view which can’t really be rotated as freely as Ragnarok but hey! It’s an awesome setup for a 2d game. Some of the characters (namely NPCs) may look out of place, being all non-anime and stuff but that shouldn’t be much of a problem as a player’s focus is his or her character. Things can get quite confusing at times since some NPCs look a lot like each other. Maybe it’s just me but I often end up interacting with the wrong NPC, probably because I tend to remember their faces and not the names.

The Verdict

During the beta, things ran pretty smoothly. I’m sure this MMO will cater to a lot of gamers worldwide. A diverse character creation system, a whole array of possibilities, this is one awesome game. The game has an item mall so I guess players can just quicken the pace if things start to turtle around. The pet system is superb as well, giving a whole new mechanic for the strengthening of your everyday adventure buddies. The stat system, in my opinion is rather stupid as people would always go for a stereotypical build after learning which one hits harder. Stats are nothing more than a nuisance that separates people who just started from the people who experimented for countless nights trying to find the right build. Really, there are more ways to encourage character builds, and stats (in my opinion) are definitely one of the worst ways to promote individuality. Overall I would say that the game still has more room for improvement. One thing is for certain though; Zodiac Online is definitely on the right track.

The good:
– Awesome character creation
– Pet system
– Quests
– Good visuals

The bad:
– Stats system again?
– I can see clones manifesting in the future
– lack of individual character looks.

Cabal Online Europe Interview: Getting Into the Updates for OnRPG

Cabal Online Europe Interview: Getting Into the Updates for OnRPG
Questions by: Vincent Haoson, OnRPG Journalist
Answered by: Anthony Smith

OnRPG: Hello and thank you for giving us the opportunity to bug you guys! We on OnRPG were pretty curious with the game updates of Cabal Online, the two new dungeons, Illusion Castle and Steamer Crazy. So far, how’s the reception of the players to these two new dungeons?

Both Illusion Castle and Steamer Crazy have been welcomed by the players as signs of the direction that the developer team want to take with the dungeon design. Illusion Castle’s free camera view and unique cavern-like feel, and the challenging nature of the solo Steamer Crazy are the most-praised aspects if we go by player feedback.

Cabal Online Europe

OnRPG: Can you tell us how Illusion Castle and Steamer Crazy fit into the whole story of Navareth?

Illusion Castle ties in with the main story of Cabal Online, involving one of the key NPC’s from the story quests who have gone missing. The player is tasked with entering one of the main Strongholds of one of the strongest monster Clans to go and look for this NPC.

Steamer Crazy is not connected with the main storyline, but thematically it ties in with the area where it is located – a wasteland populated with semi-sentient machines. We cannot give away more than that without spoiling the dungeon!

OnRPG: Aside from the requirements, dungeon type, location and the entrance item what are the differences between these two new dungeons?

Illusion Castle is a group-dungeon, with several boss-encounters, hidden quests and mind-boggling challenges to overcome. It is set inside a huge maze of caverns for players to explore and provides some of the best loot that is to be found within the game.

Steamer Crazy, on the other hand, is strictly a solo dungeon with a choice of three difficulty settings – easy, medium and hard. The dungeon is literally set on the back of a moving train, and the player has to fight through specific objectives in a limited amount of time. The dungeon is fast, frantic and is certainly not for the feint hearted.

OnRPG: How many new monsters were introduced at the opening of Illusion Castle and Steamer Crazy? What were the things you considered when you were thinking of the monsters you would include in the dungeons? How much effort do players need to exert to take down the monsters found on Illusion Castle and Steamer Crazy?

The monsters inside both dungeons are members of the two monster clans serving as the opponents. Inside Illusion Castle the players will find themselves pitted against much stronger versions of the monsters from the Phantasmal Clan, and the bosses are all new – both in appearance and abilities and tactics. Inside Steamer Crazy players will find some of the Metal Clan monsters at the start, and all new monsters in the second part of the dungeon.

OnRPG: What were the things you considered when you included the New Epic Weaponry, Lycanus as drop items in Illusion castle?

The Lycanus weapons are very special. Unlike any other weapons available in-game at the moment they come with three bonus options at the same time (the normal is one), and they are character-binding once picked up. They have the potential to be some of the most powerful weapons in Cabal, so they were made binding to compensate and to protect the market. Of course, you will also notice the fantastic appearance of these weapons – they are really raising the bar as far as aesthetics are concerned.

OnRPG: Where did the title Lycanus come from? How does it fit to the whole Cabal lore?

Lycanus weapons can only be obtained from one specific location: Players have to defeat Kaneph Lycanus, the final boss of the Illusion Castle dungeon. The weapons are therefore named after the foe that drops them.

Cabal Online Europe Combat

OnRPG: Will the new equipment affect the game’s balance? Why or why not?

Lycanus weapons have the potential to be very powerful, but to compensate for this they are bound to the character that picked them up. They are also not that easy to find, so given the current state of the game they will not have an adverse effect on the game balance and will in fact improve the gameplay experience for many players.

OnRPG: Included in the recent changes in the game is the revamped UI, why did you do so?

The revamped UI is only the first part of complete interface revamp, and it provides a much cleaner, more modern-looking UI for the game. It was one of the areas really in need of improvement, with a general consensus among users and developers that the old user-interface was simply too “cluttered”. Furthermore it now allows 24 skills on the skill quick-slot (expanded from 12), a much-needed change with all the skills players now have available to them.

OnRPG: Did the players request for the UI changes or were they were taken from observations by the Cabal Team? How did you get the response from the players?

Creating ‘skins’ that changes the appearance of the default game UI is one of the activities the Cabal community is known for. The most popular of these ‘skins’ changed the appearance of the UI to a much more modern looking one, and the developer team saw that there was a need to improve the UI appearance. They also took the chance to improve the functionality of the UI, offering more skill slots, and quicker access to important functions with the new UI.

OnRPG: Will there be any updates for low level characters in Cabal in the future? Why or Why not?

We just received several updates aimed at improving the game experience for new and lower-level characters. Several ‘training’ dungeons were introduced that are essentially easier versions of the higher-level dungeon instances, and can give fantastic equipment for low-levels as reward.

We have also recently added a 7-day bonus to all new players of the game, with additional experience, access to the premium channels and extra inventory space. It should certainly help new players begin their adventure in the world of Nevareth.

Cabal Online Inventory
Inventory Space

OnRPG: Were the changes included in the Illusion castle, Steamer Cazy update necessary? Or were they geared to providing a more convenient game system for players?

The changes that came with Illusion Castle were implemented to give a better gaming experience for our players. Cabal is constantly evolving and improving, and we have a very active developer team. The changes such as the improved UI and the improved party system are 100% aimed at creating a better experience, to make playing Cabal smoother and more fun.

OnRPG: What do you consider was the biggest game system change you did in this update? Why do you think so?

The Party System was completely re-created for this update, giving players several much-requested and much-needed abilities, such as being able to form parties across maps and channels, and in perhaps the one function requested more than any other: Players in a party can now re-enter a dungeon instance if they disconnected while inside, without having to pay a second entry fee. The reaction of the Cabal community to this feature was also overwhelmingly positive.

OnRPG: Are these changes also present on the other servers of Cabal Online? Or are these only exclusive to the Europe server? Why or why not?

With the exception of the Korean service all other versions of the game (including the European and US) receive updates at the same time.

OnRPG: Will there be any more major game updates in 2010?

Without wishing to give too much away we have a very active development schedule for 2010, much of which we have yet to announce. To give a small flavour, the next patch, just released in Korea, added two brand new dungeons, new equipment, a daily quest system and major changes to the party search system.

OnRPG: Thank you for your time!

The MMO Bro Code chapter 3: On The Brink Of War

The MMO Bro Code chapter 3: On The Brink Of War
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG journalist

What is an MMO Bro? For those of you who don’t know, MMO Bros are probably the most awesome people you’ll find in your favorite MMOs. They are so awesome that they tend to outshine the game, hence the continuous changing of MMOs. What can we say about war? Well, it’s basically the theme of almost every MMO out there-some even use it as a part of their title (hell I don’t know what they’re trying to prove). Much like in real life, some MMO Bros also have roles to play in war, hence the list below. Let’s check it out, shall we?

Bro Code Intro

MMO Bro War class Archetypes

1) The Racist: MMO Wars are all about racism. Though the whole idea of racism is unacceptable IRL, it does serve as a good morale boost in the MMO world. Racists are bitter Bros who have been camped and harassed during their early levels, giving birth to bloodthirsty profane monsters who will flood your screen with hate every time they see the enemy. They are highly skilled in PVP as they train continuously in order to smash their foes once and for all.

Can Bro-volve to: Saurons, Bro Grenade, Archon, Rambo

2) Sauron (yes, from The Lord of the Rings): Was there ever a time when everyone in your group was ordered to take down a single player in a pool of enemy forces? Yes sir! That right there is the Sauron. Saurons are highly skilled players who have been playing the game for a very long time. The game itself no longer poses any form of challenge for them, hence their prowess in the PVP. In some way, Saurons are comparable to your juvenile high school quarterback as they tend to boast a lot (make that most of the time).

3) The Spy: Indeed, what would a war be without spies? One thing about these Bros is that anyone can be one. Though spywork is as easy as creating a level 1 character in the opposing faction, these characters are of utmost importance in the fields of war. This may seem totally unBro-like but like they say, “all is fair in love and war”. Spies are generally weak by nature, but beware as not all spies have weak Bro alts. These Bros are loved by their fellow Bros, despite their despicable profession.

Bro Code Archon

Can Bro-volve to: Archon

Second Classes

1) The Archon: Much like Guild leaders, the Archon’s is a “big Bro’s big Bro”. No, they are not dictators, but rather Bros of high-cali-Bro who have mastered the art of war and its strategies. These Bros must be treated with respect and must be followed to ensure your survival. Archons may not be your race’s Sauron, but there are no rules specifying that Archons cannot be one.

Referred to as: Bro, Sir, kind sir (in RP scenarios)

2) Bro Grenade: We’re not all Saurons and that’s a fact, but of course that doesn’t stop us from wanting to take a few casualties in the first wave. Ironically, Bro Grenades are there to take Saurons down. For those of you who don’t know, these are characters who aren’t as strong as Saurons but make up for it in numbers. The Bro Grenade’s duty is to die after taking twice as many casualties from the enemy faction. Most of these Bros die after a few hits but an army wouldn’t be complete without front liners.

3) Rambo: Rambos are players with a bone to pick. These are mainly racists who just can’t seem to get over their hatred for the opposite faction, resulting in a frenzy of bloodshed all throughout the map. These are people who raid towns, vanquishing newbies without honor. Their methods are totally unBro-like but are still classified as Bros nonetheless.

Rules of Combat

Rule number 1: Never camp newbies

Bro Code Dont Camp Newbies

Although they are easy prey, there is an unspoken rule regarding camping. Killing newbies will always be a treat, especially when your Rambo is capable of killing so many; however, this action holds your fellow Bros accountable for whatever beef the other races may hold against you. Your circle of Bros can just opt not to help you when you get camped back, so always be prepared for this scenario.

Rule number 2: ALWAYS obey thy Archon

Even if you’re a Lone MMO Bro, a Veteran, or an Elite Alpha Bro Commander (refer to MMO Bro code 1 & 2 for more details), there’s no excuse in disobeying your Archon. Archons are elected for a reason, and as much as it would be of utter awesomeness to be a lone rule breaker, you can be held responsible for whatever mistake you’re most likely to make in the middle of the battlefield. No one tells Bros what to do, but Bros must always know when to follow and honor their fellow Bros in war.

Rule number 3 for (Raiders): Always do the Bro Walk of WAR

This is not really mandatory, but a Bro’s gotta do what a Bro’s gotta do. The Bro Walk of War is done when you walk around while a bunch of lowbies tries to take you down. So far, the only ones capable of doing this are Saurons and tank characters. Technically, everyone can do this, but their defense will be limited hence only a few seconds of walking awesomeness.

Given scenario: Accretian Gladius/Warder raids the Bellato base and newbies started to call their MAUs (Giant Robot thingy). Normally, you can simply just hack and slash your way through, but Bros are masters of psywar. Yes, walking around or towards a lowbie while their allies are trying to kill you doesn’t really work to your advantage; however, it’s still damn awesome.

Rule number 4: Ze taunt

Ze Taunt Bro Code

Always remember that some games have taunting actions that will help you emphasize your victory over your opponents. You don’t really have to say PWND or OWNED every time you kill a dude because that is just retarded. Always treat your enemies with respect. So whenever you kill your enemy, always look for the sit action and spam it on your opponent’s head LOL.

Last words for the war Bros

There are no rules and there’s no way out. Since war is all about PVP, you bet your arse things that things are going to get extremely hot. Much like GMs, a Bro’s job is to make sure the war goes well and bloody. Most people think it’s quite rude for Bros to act like frat boys in a college party, but this is war fool! No way are we hosting social parties in this region. A word of advice? KILL EM ALL.

Aika: Introducing the Aitan Arena

Aika: Introducing the Aitan Arena

There’s no thirst as unquenchable as the bloodthirst of players in Aika Online, whether it’s awakened by clashes over political supremacy in Castle Siege or a call to defend the home nation’s sacred relics from invading armies.  There are never enough ways to experience the thrill of winning glory, riches, and unique items through killing worthy foes, which is why we’re proud to introduce a brand new player-versus-player system to Aika: the Aitan Arena.

The Aitan Arena unleashes teams of up to 100 vs. 100 against each other in a dodgeball-style fight to the finish, where fallen enemies drop treasures and the survivors can divvy up hefty rewards.  Matches for four different groups will be held twice a day in each of the five nations, providing plenty of opportunity for combatants to test their mettle.  There’s also no need to worry about imbalanced levels or coordination difficulties–the Aitan Arena makes mass PvP accessible to more Aika players than ever before through its level bracket system and convenient automatic queue.

Minutes before a match begins, players are instantly transported to the Arena after responding to a pop-up window.  Once the curtains on either side of the medieval, stone-walled battle area disappear, the two randomly assembled teams charge each other in a struggle for survival thick with spells, swords, and gunpowder.  Every defeated opponent rewards the victor with honor points, medals, and items, as well as one fewer obstacle to the pile of gold reserved for the victors.  Each match ends once the losing team’s players are completely eliminated.  There are no second chances or revives, giving the Aitan Arena a pulse-pounding edge.

Available to any citizen of Aika’s five warring nations from level 11 onward, the Aitan Arena offers players a fun, fast-paced event which will prove itself compelling to battle hardened warriors and PvP novices alike.
