WEBZEN has finished the VIP Tester recruitment for the action RPG C9 (Continent of the Ninth Seal)’.
WEBZEN announced last January 6th, C9’s first global service VIP Tester recruitment, which has exceeded expectations with more than over 10,000 appliers on the first day only. As a result, the recruitment successfully ended yesterday on the 18th.
WEBZEN will select 10,000 users where chances are higher for users who have given more interest in the test through C9’s Facebook community (http://www.facebook.com/C9Webzen), and will announce these 10,000 VIP testers on January 20th. The testers will be able to participate in the “VIP TEST” starting on February 4th which will be open for a month.
Most of the appliers come from North America and Europe, as statistics show that over 70% of the applicants are from these regions.
WEBZEN is considering adding additional servers in order to handle the large number of applicants that WEBZEN did not expect.
C9 has received five awards, including the Grand Prize, in one of Korea’s most prestigious award ceremonies, the Korea Game Awards, and is very well-known for its action-packed game play. Its various character customizing options, precise control system and varieties of skill combos has grabbed many gamer’s attention which leaded to great success with over 420,000 users enjoying it on the first day of service in South Korea.
Among the nine continents of C9, based on the storyline, the first three continents will be available during the VIP Test. Selectable classes will be the Fighter, Hunter and Shaman. With a level cap of 50, each character can choose one of three different advanced classes at level 20 which is a total of 9 classes.
There will also be an event during the test period where users will have a chance to obtain ‘Legends’ & ‘Auspices’, a unique icon that gives buff effects. These icons, given to event winners, will be permanently useable for future tests and the official launch. For more details please visit WEBZEN’s official website (http://c9.webzen.com).
Meanwhile, the VVIP Test recruitment for the game media has also finished simultaneously on January 18th. Selected game media will be able to experience C9 earlier than VIP Testers starting from February 1st.
Both of the tests are available to world-wide users, except South Korea, Japan, China, and Thailand, where official servers are already available.
Jihun Lee, Head of Global Publishing at WEBZEN said, “Initially, we prepared the VIP Test for only 10,000 users for technical and game related feedbacks. As the number of applicants has exceeded our expectations, we apologize for selecting a limited number of users for the test.” He also added, “For the users who have not been chosen as a VIP Tester, please keep your interest in the C9 Facebook community, where we will be holding events for selecting new additional VIP Testers.”
WEBZEN has started the server launch countdown for the VIP Test on their official website, which will open at 9 PM (GMT) on February 4th!
Blacklight Retribution First Impressions
Blacklight Retribution First Impressions
By Mohammad Abubakr, OnRPG Journalist
Perfect World Entertainment continues to pump out new releases and their latest game Blacklight Retribution does not disappoint. Although the game is still in its beta phases, it plays great and provides hours of entertainment to its players. Like all FPS games it recycles the typical FPS style but also brings new and exciting features to the table.
In this day and age, everyone should know how a FPS game is played. Players use their WASD keys to maneuver their character while using their mouse to aim and fire. This remains the same in Blacklight Retribution as no shooting techniques were added. It is still locate, scope and fire to land kills.
This game was made to be a shooter paced faster than Counter Strike but slower than Tribes. The maps are medium sized with various hiding and flanking areas but the built in Hyper Reality Visor (HRV) makes sure there is always action. The HRV is basically a built in map hack. It allows players to see enemies and allies through walls. This feature keeps the game going and always keeps you on your toes. If you have never been a fan of campers, you will love HRV.
The HRV in action.
To maintain some balance, I have noticed that while the HRV consumes an energy bar when in use, it can only be activated if you have full energy. This means that players cannot use the HRV constantly while walking around to always have knowledge about an enemy’s whereabouts.
Just like every other FPS game, it offers the basic game modes. Currently in the beta the game offers: deathmatch, team deathmatch, domination, capture the flag and king of the hill.
All of these game modes are self explanatory as we have all seen them used in other FPS games. However, while playing the game I came to love one simple yet effective feature offered in domination.
As we all know, the domination game mode is the typical control point game mode. Opposing teams battle it out to reign over multiple control points until the goal is reached. In most FPS games players simply need to stand by the control points to capture them.
Team MVPs
In Blacklight Retribution, capturing points is not that simple. Players must play a very simple hacking game to capture the control point. While this mini game is very simple, players just need to match numbers using their keyboard, it offered something new to the game mode. This very simple mini game forces players to complete it very fast because of the action surrounding the player. It is great to see Zombie studios adding new features to already existing game modes and would love to see what other innovations they have up their sleeves.
Blacklight uses a points system to award skilled players during matches. Points are earned by doing basically everything that is beneficial to yourself or your team. Some examples include kills, defending and capturing control points.
These points get reset every round and can be used in game at weapon depots to purchase upgraded weapons such as the rocket launcher and flamethrower. These upgraded weapons are dropped on death and can be picked up by other players.
The weapon depots also offer items such as health and ammo refills but the item everyone is aiming for is the Hardsuit. When purchased, your character is basically given a mech suit to be worn! This is a very powerful weapon both in terms of damage and survivability. However, you will have to spend a good deal of the game conserving your points to unlock it.
While a player equipped with this suit is very hard to kill, the HRV can be used to locate the suit’s randomly generated weak spot. Shooting this weak spot will cause the suit to take ten times the normal damage.
I do not see myself using the weapon upgrades from the weapon depot for reasons other than killing players in Hardsuits. If a player uses the flamethrower on a Hardsuit, they can burn the player which allows them to steal the Hardsuit! An educational video was prepared by PWE demonstrating this very maneuver!

Why can’t I just buy the item?!
The game allows for a lot of customization to suit every player’s playstyle but I was disappointed when I saw the shop.
You gain credits by completing rounds or purchasing them with real cash. Unfortunately these credits cannot simply be used to purchase items you are interested in. Instead they are used to rent items. You decide how much you want to pay between various options with the highest cost allowing longer rental periods.
I hate this feature in FPS games as players are forced to continuously play to effectively use their hard earned credits. It also means that if players do not play enough to earn sufficient credits before their expiration date, they will be forced to play using different play styles until they can purchase their weapon. Finally, it also limits the number of weapons a player can own. If your old weapons keep expiring, it is quite hard to maintain a large number of weapons.
All in all, this is a great F2P FPS game. While it may not offer completely unique gameplay, the game does a great job at recycling the classic FPS style while still adding new features such as the Hardsuit and HRV. Keep in mind that these are just my first impressions, the game is still in beta and could change for the better or worse. I would just love to see the weapon rental feature be reworked or replaced.
Blacklight Retribution is going into its next closed beta phase today so be sure to check it out for yourselves!

Seven Souls Online coming to North America this Spring
Seven Souls Online coming to North America this Spring
A series of bloody battles awaits players in the “blitz-paced” MMORPG Seven Souls Online from NEOWIZ GAMES. Set to launch in North America this spring, Seven Souls Online is currently accepting pre-registration for closed beta testers at the game’s official website!
Seven Souls Online allows players to unleash their inner demon in a fantasy world which combines the ancient East and West, fused with elements of science-fiction. Players can choose from three character classes, the magic-enhanced Manatech Rebel, the savage Imperial Guard and the cunning Exiled Avenger, and then slaughter their way through vast armies of enemies.
Additional Seven Souls Online features include:
Rage Mode – With the push of a button, players can turn their characters into gruesome monsters for increased attack strength and critical attack chance.
Book of Lost Souls – This book is one of the game’s most distinctive features. It not only tells the background story, but also differentiates each class from others by providing distinctive skills and power-ups.
Enchant and Cube Systems – Players can enjoy easy-to-use Enchant and Cube Systems to enforce or dismantle their items and weapons. The randomness aspect allows players to acquire extremely rare items.
Anti-Bot – Seven Souls Online does not welcome hunting bots. The anti-bot system will penalize excessive hunters while rewarding loyal, quest-completing players.
“Seven Souls Online will raise the bar for free-to-play MMORPGs in the North American market,” said John Nam, COO of NEOWIZ GAMES Inc. “The game is set to provide an electrifying online free-to-play experience with its distinctive features and gorgeous graphics.”
Eden Eternal Releaes Samurai Class and More
Eden Eternal Releases Samurai Class and More
Aeria Games today launched the latest patch for its highly popular free-to-play MMORPG, Eden Eternal, further expanding upon the game’s already robust content. The offerings in this content update include the new Samurai class, a totally revamped Territory Wars mode and the new Monster Battle Arena, allowing for even more intense player versus player combat.
The katana-wielding Samurai class has slashed its way to Eden Eternal and is fierce in close combat. This powerful DPS class utilizes a variety of buffs and physical attacks such as the “Asura Slash,” an airborne attack that will damage even the toughest foes.
The addition of the Monster Arena will have players excitedly queuing up, now that they have the ability to play as one of their favorite dungeon boss monsters in 3v3 PvP action. Players will team up, and will be able to win Honor Stars that are redeemable for valuable items.
Also included in this content patch:
Improved Territory Wars: Players can enjoy revamped Territory Wars where guilds band together to take down the opposing team.
Level 60 Hero’s Trial Dungeons: Explore two brand new extensive dungeons with new bosses and gear.
Tarot Card Reader: The newly introduced NPC Morlin offers 10 percent bonus to a randomly selected class tree
