Disgaea PC Review: The Importance, the Debacle, the Misinformation

By Jason Parker (Ragachak)

Disgaea Review

Nippon Ichi, the company best known for ridiculous anime-style strategy games such as Disgaea, Makai Kingdom, and . . . yes, even La Pucelle Tactics has never had a strong PC presence. With a game collection that was almost entirely on the Sony consoles [with the exception of the peculiar, but well done Nintendo DS port of Disgaea], there has always been a guaranteed market with Sony. But in 2016 is that really enough? There are so many gamers that want this series, but due to only having one console, or preferring to game on PC, this has eluded them. I know personally a large handful of players who want Disgaea 5, but are unwilling to shell out for a PS4 just for that. And rightfully so! That seems a trifle ridiculous. So, Nippon Ichi ported the Playstation Portable version of Disgaea onto PC with the clever name of “Disgaea PC.” Look, they can’t all be winners.

Disgaea Review

However, this was met with an insane amount of frustration from players of all PC types, myself included! This is a PSP game. It’s not an HD Remake, it’s not an upscaled version of Disgaea 1; it’s a port, a translation from a handheld onto the PC via Steam. You would think that with ten months of work and two solid months of testing, this would be met with zero problems. However, forums flooded immediately with players who had issues because they pre-loaded the game. The game would not load, or would run at less than 10 frames per second. People with i7 processors and 32GB of RAM would find that even their monstrous pcs could not play this PSP game. What the hell? Mine isn’t that amazing, but I found I could not run it, no matter what settings I tweaked. However, with a bit of desperation web research, I found that it was the Steam Beta opt-in that was killing my PC! It consumes RAM at a frightening pace, and simply turning that off allowed me to play the game. That might not be the fix for everyone, but it was for me!

Disgaea Review

Earth Fire is the best fire.

But after that debacle, we get down to the meat and potatoes of this: What is Disgaea, and what does it mean for Nippon Ichi? Disgaea is a turn-based strategy game, a’la Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem. A major difference is that Disgaea takes place in the Netherworld, and your main cast are all a bunch of greedy, evil, selfish bastards. Oh and demons! [Except the adorable Flonne, and a few others. . .] It also differs in that the character level cap is 9999. And even that isn’t the end! You can reincarnate, returning to level 1 with x% of your stats intact, and do it again for even STRONGER characters. Disgaea is a grind-fest to top all grindfests. That’s what it is at its core; but it’s irreverent, funny, the characters are likable, and it’s pretty adorable while managing to keep some pretty intense fanservice. It’s said that Disgaea doesn’t really start til the post-game. That’s not quite as true in Disgaea 1 as it is in the later games, but it’s still a pretty relevant statement. There’s a function called the Dark Assembly; it’s basically a council where you can put forth ideas to make the game more difficult or easy, depending on what you’re after. Better items, triple xp, extort money from the Senators, new areas! Tons of stuff. To a Disgaea vet, this is nothing new, but being on the PC, all new players get to potentially enjoy this series for the first time!

Disgaea Review

Much like the American Congress, on the typical day you can only expect a quarter of representatives to show up.

But this Assembly is still made up of Demons, and they may not want you to succeed at all. What’s a Demon to do? In later games you can bribe them or fight them, but in the original, you can only give up, or resort to force. But the longer the game goes on, the stronger the Assembly gets, and it’s not always the same demons. This can be a risky proposition because it will definitely alienate members of the Senate. You have a fun cast of characters, and you can make your own party of Mages, Rogues, Fighters, Gunners, Majin and Angels, whatever tickles your fancy. When you unlock them, that is. But the main characters are pretty damn powerful in their own right, and come with some outrageous skills to boot. The story is unique, and tells the struggle of good versus evil in a very refreshing way, and newcomers to the series are sure to fall in love with it. Between the main story, New Game+, and all of the Post Game content, there is far too much going on to simply list it right now. Suffice to say that you will certainly get your money’s worth.

Disgaea Review

What is Evil?

Score: Great

But what does it mean for Nippon Ichi? If, despite the terrible debacle that was the launch of Disgaea, if it turns out to be a smash hit on Steam, maybe we’ll see Disgaea 2, Makai Kingdom, or perhaps even further into the franchise! I love this idea; while sure, I have a Playstation 4 and the current Disgaea title, maybe I want to play on my PC! The launch for Disgaea was absolutely effing awful. Days of the game not working, no solutions or answers in sight; but Nippon Ichi listened to the fans and paid attention to the reports they were getting, and were quite diligent. It was a bust, but people are able to play and enjoy it now, and that counts for something. It’s not a remake as I said, but it’s a port right to PC, and it’s still quite pretty, despite being as old as it is. The gameplay is sharp, and though some of the graphics settings don’t even seem worth it, it has an incredible amount of replay value.

Disgaea PC Review

Looks Matter:

+ The graphics are still pretty sharp; there are options to increase the look of the game a bit, but not appreciably so. The characters are still adorable and wonderful.

  • I was still kind of hoping for the graphical update settings to really be worth using. You can make the edge of the screen blur? Why the hell would you want to do that? Seriously.

Disgaea PC Review

Replay Value:

+ The game plays magnificently, and if playing a game for weeks, months, and possibly years on end is your thing, this is definitely the PC title for you. There is a ton of replay value: So many different characters to use, or classes to unlock, and challenges around every corner.

  • While sure, you can play this game almost forever, the slog of grinding isn’t for everyone. Not everyone’s going to want to play Ordeals 3 for a week to level characters up several hundred times. It hovers between niche’/cult favorite to mainstay RPG. But the leveling can make this absolutely infuriating.

Disgaea PC Review

Don’t Take Things So Serious:

+ The story is both super serious, and absolutely freakin’ ridiculous. It tells the story of love, and trust, and importance. . . in Hell. It’s got some pretty intense twists and turns. It’s fun, clever, and deep in its own special way.

  • It’s also feels VERY MUCH like Japanese anime; I mean, it’s a JRPG after all. But the fanservice might annoy people. The super huge breasted catgirls and succubi, or even humans are all here. It bombards you with references the longer the story goes on, and it could potentially be a turn-off. If you’re looking for a serious RPG, you might want to steer clear.

Elder Scrolls Online: Thieves Guild DLC Review

By Jason Parker (Ragachak)

ESO-Thieves-Guild-Review16

Elder Scrolls Online saw fit to give some love to those paying the optional subscription this month with the release of a new and long anticipated DLC – The Thieves Guild. Otherwise this must have update will cost you 2000 Crowns. But as far as the actual gameplay, I was pleasantly surprised. I know I have lampooned the game kind of hard in the past, and admittedly, some of that might have been unfair Skyrim biased rage in action. The Thieves Guild DLC is proof that Zenimax is working hard to fix the problems of old in ESO and create a better product for the Elder Scrolls fanbase. This DLC might not be for everyone though; it requires espionage, stealth, timing, and sneakiness. You really get into the Thieves Guild style of gameplay. Sneaking into areas you don’t belong, fencing items, creeping around and diving into hiding spots to avoid patrols! It’s pretty intense. It reminds me of Thief, or Metal Gear Solid in a bunch of little, but good ways. You don’t have to be a particular level to get into this DLC either, which is good for me; I was. . . very low level coming back to the game.

ESO-Thieves-Guild-Review08

This DLC is a huge departure of what I’ve seen in ESO, and I honestly love it. One of the features that I found that I enjoyed was you can “fence” items you steal while on a mission. While you’re out performing a job, there are always other items in peoples’ homes, warehouses, etc, that you can also pilfer. There’s a fencer in the guild that will sell these stolen items for you, which you can do X amount of times a day. This can lower your bounty, but it is not the only way to get away with not paying what you owe the government. One of the new features are the Guild Traits, perks/passive abilities you can pick up using Skill Points. One of my favorites is “Swiftly Forgotten” and it is pretty powerful in that it increases the speed at which your bounty/heat fall off. I love that, because I’m not always so stealthy and being spotted in a place you shouldn’t be compiles your total bounty quickly. Eventually you can get “Clemency” which lets you basically tell the guard “I know powerful people, this was taken care of” and you walk away like a big shot. I don’t know how far this goes though. Can I get away with murder using that? That’d be pretty awesome.

ESO-Thieves-Guild-Review25

The Thieves Guild offerings are rather sparse at first, especially for a low level novice like myself, but the more missions you do, the greater the infamy of the Guild and the more NPCs that begin to populate it. With more members comes better activities to keep you interested in the DLC longer. You get a cool costume to boot to show your dedication to the cause. I’m very grateful again, that it scales your level up so I could really enjoy being a bandit in the desert. It comes with two delves, two bosses, and three crafting locations, but that I haven’t fully explored yet. I’m not that wild about crafting in general. I just wanted to get my sneak on! I love the blue set pieces I got from doing missions, and there is even better gear in the Trial, “Maw of Lorkhaj.” There’s seven different sets of gear in total, between normal/veteran, and there are even BOE sets for those of you who farm to sell these to others. This new locale also features Tip Boards for tons of little missions to do.

ESO-Thieves-Guild-Review29

There’s also Heists! You get to go breaking-and-entering, performing timed Heists. The more optional stuff you do during these, the greater your reward. I loved doing all the stealth stuff, even if I’m not really good at it. It’s a break from the normal grind, and I appreciate that. The final really fun thing included are assistants: Smuggler [fence on the spot but he takes a cut], Banker, and Vendor. The Smuggler can’t be seen (besides by you), but the others can.

ESO-Thieves-Guild-Review05

There’s lots of stuff for budding thieves to explore across Tamriel! The area for the Thieves Guild is kind of small, but it’s a beautiful desert region. But I really love the way you can play the game with this DLC. It offers a much needed distraction from the core grind! I’m hoping that Zenimax will offer more guilds if this is popular, and make ESO feel more like a real Elder Scrolls game. That’s the big take away for me; the Guild feels like the first real step to transition the elements of the single player series into the MMO genre. It’s ideal for a solo player expansion. The content is fun and engaging to return to multiple times, and even people who aren’t really interested in theft in game could probably get something out of it, like the passives, or the sweet Camel mount. If you’re a fan of the Elder Scrolls, you owe it to yourself to check this new content out!

Daybreak Announces EverQuest Next Cancelled and Landmark Launch Date

Daybreak Announces EverQuest Next Cancelled and Landmark Launch Date

In a letter today from Daybreak’s President, Russell Shanks, the game company has announced the cancellation of development for EverQuest Next.

The statement hinted that the game was simply unviable:

In the case of EverQuest Next, we accomplished incredible feats that astonished industry insiders. Unfortunately, as we put together the pieces, we found that it wasn’t fun. We know you have high standards when it comes to Norrath and we do too. In final review, we had to face the fact that EverQuest Next would not meet the expectations we – and all of you – have for the worlds of Norrath.

On the flipside, EverQuest Next’s foundational game and predecessor, Landmark, has been announced for a Spring 2016 release. Daybreak acknowledges that it has tried to make Landmark a game of its own, and not just a building tool for EverQuest Next. An exact date has not been given. However, the price has been set at $9.99.  An FAQ about the launch is available here.

RIFT kicks off its celebrations with a wealth of promotions and in-game events that offer exclusive rewards for players all across the world of Telara. “Five years after we introduced truly massive battles and unprecedented character class building flexibility, RIFT is still the leader in offering players those experiences, and plenty of other innovations that get you playing with other people, faster than any other MMO” said Chris Junior, RIFT Game Director at Trion Worlds.

Originally launched in March 2011, RIFT puts players into the role of the Ascended as they fight to defend the elemental world of Telara and cleanse the world of the threat of dragons. Far from slowing down, development on RIFT continues at a rapid pace: “We have big plans for RIFT this year and beyond, including some amazing stories and major tech advancements that we’ll be implementing next month in 3.6,” said Junior.

From March 10 through April 5, players will earn 5th Anniversary Tickets for completing zone events, random dungeons and Warfronts, and weekly crafting quests. The more tickets players earn, the more in-game prizes they can unlock. Prizes include the Mystical Carousel Ram (mount), the Haunted Terminal (dimension), Tier 3 raid gear (rings and earrings), 46 capes (one for each soul), and much more.

There will also be weekly and month-long prizes awarded based on a player’s position on the new leaderboard hosted by Enjin.com. With tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of goodies being given away, all players have a great chance to reap the rewards. Each week the Top 100 players will earn prizes ranging from a 5-Year Patron reward to various $5-$100 credit packs, Black Tier Loyalty rewards, every premium mount ever released as part of a trove or supply crate, and much more. Players will be able to check their position on the Leaderboard beginning tomorrow (March 11th).

RIFT’s five year anniversary culminates in the game’s next big update launching next month, RIFT 3.6: Celebration of the Ascended.
