actually, it can. Normally, a person grows up "training" their brain to remember stressful or traumatic experiences. So the brain can distinguish between important and insignificant events by the amount of attention you're paying or how stressed you are during. (Stress can mean pain/pleasure in this situation).
Though it is true, though. The brain does just remember things instead of remembering 'this' instead of 'that'.
