Is being smart something your are born with or is it the ability to retain informatio - General

So you guys decide is being smart a talent you are born with or is it the ability to simply retain information well.

Being smart you need to be able to pickup, process and analyze the information you are given. Yet most people mistaken that having the ability to retain large amount of info. is consider smart.

A good example for this are schools in Asia. In Asian schools they train you more to retain information than to say critical thinking or processing. Most Asians ( they are smart and I know it is a stereotype but...) absorb information other than to challenge it. Is that consider smart?

Depends what you mean by "smart", really.

Whether you mean academically or generally.

The way I see it is that nobody is smarter than another, maybe some excel in some area's that the other is lacking in, but those lacking make up for it in other area's, which could be where the other person lacks

Which kind of balances it out.

Nope. Some people are just mentally weaker overall. We can thank the DDT from india for that.

This is a question that I pondered when I was going through my first semester of college. I don't think I can really say that everyone is equal intellectually, but I can say that everyone has a potential and getting to that point is never easy.

they cant just be born with the ability to know what y=mx+b is

but like the other ppl said, they have to have to capability to learn from... and some people do learn faster than others. yup it's kinda unfair really. but hey, life is unfair.

some ppl even have enough patience to look through all those books rather than play games or go outside.

I'm fairly certain some people are just born stupid... After going through highschool and you'll see these drooling morons who are destined to work at Burger King. No amount of studying would be able to help these people.

Others have significantly better memories (I wish I could remember stuff better) and the ability to problem solve. I don't know if this is genetic or enviromental (Eating tuna makes smarter kids? Or having a smarter parent is more important?).
