You have to understand the reason why World of Warcraft is so ****ing popular is that because they developed a devoted fanbase BEFORE they made the game. You guys cannot deny that Diablo and Warcraft were very fun games. It was their previous success that made it possible for World of Warcraft to be a success.
World of Warcraft does a have a fanbase , though , it alone , isnt noteworthy. Star Wars , Lord British , Jake Song , Lineage , even Matrix had a bigger fan base than WoW did a launch.

Nobody can point the finger at what made WoW top dog for so long. Star Wars just signed up over 3 million people US to hyperdrive thingie for previewing next films , a game and new art / new characters.

But Star War has never been able to turn fans into box sales , they get fans to buy 1,600.00 statues of Yoda , but cant turn that into sales for games.

Also Lord British , had a fanbase of 250k ~ 350k , who follow him everywhere (including buying 1 month of Lineage 1 , to meet him in game and fight in a siege with him). Numbers spiked from 60k to 300k in Lineage 1 which LB came into the game.

Numbers also spiked in TR when he gave in game speech for TR. But he has not been able to convert fans to sale.

Matrix is another one , Sega reported pre order sales in 800k mark , but only sold 350k game disc , only 120k were converted to sales.

Jake Song is the father of modern PVP titles , he has a fanbase which is in the same zone as Star Trek cast member. He shows up , fills the room. But he has never been able to convert fans to sale , he also appeared in game in Lineage 2 to give a speech and spiked sales but didnt increase in numbers.

WoW fans might be a factor , it might be Ads , it might be them working with China , it might be the IQ 10 content, it might even just be a fluke. If people knew for sure they d copy it , even Blizzard isnt sure what the hell they did.

Beside that being popular doesnt make you the best or even good. Look at Hitler he was popular and ruled over a nation , but he was evil.

Most games are niche markets now , they appeal to certain body and have a certain fanbase. Just because its not WoW doesnt make it a bad game. Its like I prefer white cake with blue frosting over chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.
