As long as your winxp os disk is sp2, you won't have any probs using the windows partitioner during install. (so it can fully allocate all the space on a large drive).
Over partitioning a drive isn't really that useful for home use anyway. Most people aren't going to be dual booting OS's and shit like that. Most of them won't even know how anyway.
I generally just use two drives at home. They are so damn cheap now there is no point in partitioning really. 1 drive fully allocated for windows, the second for file storage.
Simple, cheap, easy and effective... best way for home use.
