Sorry, I don't really get the question...
防御 is a skill that temporarily adds a few points to your DEF stat, that's it. Not really useful in my opinion because it's only 7 seconds IIRC.

Actually, the monsters in the tutorial are EXTREMELY strong, but you have the best weapon in the game when you play it (you lose the sword in the end).
Most of the time, you avoid getting hit by evading (double tap a direction to dodge or rush in that direction).

Well I would suggest Cloths, because later on you can get good weapons just from doing quests. Also the amount for mastery starts out as 100 and the second one is 250 I think , so it's not that much. So far I have Katana, Two handed, and spear mastery.

Money is never enough in higher levels... one piece of low-mid-level armor cost like 3500...

And katana just means blade （刀） in kanji, so you are basically using katana in 4/5 forms (or "mastery" as rikusama refer to)...? (Unless you wanna go into the details that 重撃 is a notachi etc.) You already start out with the defense (守護) style, the long blade one is heavy attack (重撃), the dual one (巧迅) is agility-based, the one with 薙刀 and spear (壮術) are healer/buffers, and the short sword one (念術) is caster... Currently, you can have 3(?) styles at most, with each style maxing at 40 dan.

Lol Aozaki's explination is way better than mine, and I only refered to mastery because he would know what I'm talking about.
