Due to bitrot, a lot of internet-based sources disappear over time. One of the benefits of a site like Wikipedia is it can document information, long after sources disappear, go out of business, etc.

That's why this is a moderately important issue.

internet-based sources may disappear over time, but there are always book and periodical sources people can use. The world got around without using the internet for sources for generations. Wikipedia is allowed to do whatever the hell it wants since it is for everyone to be able to change it. If you really want an online source, go subscribe to encyclopedia brittannica. Lets see if bit rot will destroy that.

Wikipedia is definitely "allowed" to do whatever they want. That is not really the point.
