Default Senator Oprah??

Quote:
In case anyone doubted that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was a little out there, his admission that he considered appointing talk-show host Oprah Winfrey to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama should close the case.

To be sure, Winfrey is a remarkable woman. And she has been an enthusiastic backer of President Obama, having provided an early and meaningful endorsement during the former Illinois senator's race for the Democratic presidential nod. But Winfrey, who it might reasonably be suggested is otherwise engaged, has never indicated a desire to be a senator.

That didn't stop Blagojevich--who on the eve of his Illinois impeachment trial on charges related to alleged scheming to barter off Obama's seat to the highest bidder was busy comparing his circumstance with that of Mohandas Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. -- from acknowledging that, yes, he had pondered proposing "Senator Oprah."

On ABC News' Good Morning America, where Blagojevich appeared as part of a last-minute PR push on news and talk shows such as NBC's Today show and CNN's Larry King Live, Diane Sawyer went fishing for names of people the governor might have been considering as replacements for Obama.

"I've heard Oprah," said Sawyer.

"That is true," said Blagojevich, who added that, "The idea came from a friend."

"(She) seemed to be someone who had helped Barack Obama in a significant way become president. She was obviously someone with a much broader bully pulpit than other senators," the embattled governor continued.

Sawyer let Blagojevich ramble. Smart move.

"She probably wouldn't take it," he admitted, before asking himself a telling question: "And then (the governor and his aides) talked about if you offered it to her, how would you do it in a way that it didn't look like it was some gimmick to try to embarrass her."

For her part, Winfrey said she was "pretty amused" at the whole notion. "If I had been watching from the treadmill, I probably would have fallen off the treadmill," she told Gayle King on King's satellite radio program.

Amusing indeed.

Until, of course, you remember that this is how governors go about choosing senators when vacancies occur. While Blagojevich may have been irresponsible, and perhaps even illegal, in his actions, the fact is that gubernatorial appointments are invariably subject to considerations that have more to do with political positioning and PR gambits than with the will or the people of able representation.

That's why Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold is right when he says, "The controversies surrounding some of the recent gubernatorial appointments to vacant Senate seats make it painfully clear that such appointments are an anachronism that must end. In 1913, the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution gave the citizens of this country the power to finally elect their senators. They should have the same power in the case of unexpected mid term vacancies, so that the Senate is as responsive as possible to the will of the people."

Feingold plans to introduce a constitutional amendment this week to require special elections when a Senate seat is vacant.

Then, if Oprah wants to be a senator, she'll have to submit her name to the voters.

What gives you the right to say that? In order for that to even be a PLAUSIBLE statement, you'd have to survey millions of african americans and ask them why they voted for Barack Obama, not listening to the kids that live in the "hood" of yours.

You guys know the funny thing though, I think if Oprah ran... she would win.

96 percent of blacks voted for Obama. I find it hard to believe that all of them would have voted for him if he were white.
