Why not just be good at both? (as in be good at the game as a whole)
During the end of Black Temple and Sunwell progression, I was arenaing for fun on offdays and spare time for fun in rival/duelist range. Now that content can be cleared in one day or two days, I have the rest of the week to pvp more competitively, and will probably hit gladiator at the end of the season, while at the same time completing raiding achievements with my guild. Also as far as I've seen, skilled pvp'ers are good at pve and vice versa. In both, players learn to control their characters better. Also, I've noticed raiders in my guild that participate in higher rated arena are worried more about min/maxing their gear, ultimately leading to higher dps than those that don't really care about their highest potential.
