what are your thoughts of the how the media have portrayed online video games through such pieces as news reports and in newspapers?
this is for a study at university, but any responses would be great. Last edited by wallacda; 04-03-2009 at 01:47 PM. Reason: typo |

My Y hat?! You can't have my Y hat dang you! *joking joking*
I think they need to stop looking at video games as if they are all bad. Most media talk about "video games" in a whole as if they were all rated M for mature. I feel this is highly ridiculous to say the least. ~Roh |

I think the medias coverage of almost everything is biased and just fueling ridiculous paranoia and fear.
That said, some of you guys really DO have a problem though. Not many of you, but some of you. I've talked with people from here who have ZERO social life, and that isn't ever good. |

hmmmmm....interesting. Well sometimes the media can't be blamed cause gaming does have affects on people's Psychology. Sometimes positive, for example interacting with other guys helps people develop more confidence in-terms of approaching and talking to people, but aLSO negative affects like addiction and stuff.

Gaming does NOT have any harmful affect on people. The people who have been "affected" are those who can't seperate reality from a video game in the first place. Which isn't actually caused by the game itself. |

The media... just, well, sucks.
There will always be something for them to blame for our messed up little world, causing people to become paranoid and believe that it can't be the fault of their own instabilities and corruption. Games get blamed directly, and by proxy. (Lineage 2 guild to gang war) Incident: A guild arranged and took part in the killing of several members of a rival guild living locally to them. Reason/Cause: They got beat once and wanted real life revenge. (A common one). Incident: School shooting Reason/Cause: The offender played a game that had guns in it. (A D&D player hung himself, some of the props were D&D books). Incident: Suicide Reason/Cause: He played a game where if you die, you get to try again with no consequence. He was clearly trying to start over. These aren't the fault of the games, but of the idiots who play them, or the investigators who jump to extreme conclusions. |
