I've been thinking about how important world size is in an mmo or any game. Though which has travelling options such as vehicles.
I am looking to design a realistic size world, by that, something within 100sq miles or so, even more for a continent. But been thinking, perhaps a bit too big for gameplay and design. Technical aspect no so much, except the amount the objects further required for the server to process, which also ties in with the design. The bigger the world, the more unique objects needed otherwise the world will look very similar. How do people prefer world size though in games, in the style of completely open, so you can walk around an entire huge world along the edge of the ocean. |

Crumbly, but Good

Just because a world is big, doesn't mean that it has to process more individual objects than a smaller world. Clever programming can get around this sort of thing, by loading objects and models and stuff on the fly, or maybe having a load screen of like a second or so.
You can also generate content on the fly if you really need to, so that things look different. Anyway, getting back to your question; I prefer a really huge world, I'm sure everyone does. I just like to be able to walk (or fly, whatever) pretty much anywhere I can see, and find out what's there. The bigger the better.
