Jean was cornered. The building was already beginning to collapse, but he knew he had some time. Enough time to escape, hopefully. He was hiding behind the bar, and he peeked up and looked around. The place was deserted, except for a short Garchean and a small Loubetian who was leaving through the back parlour door. The short Garchaen, on the other hand, stood amidst the wreckage with a gun in his hand a wry smile on his face.

"You'll have to come out sometime," the Garchaen told him.

Jean ducked his head back behind the bar and checked his ammo. He was completely out. His hand drifted to his rapier. A plan formed in his head. "Let's settle this like men," Jean called.

There was no response. Fair enough. He was expecting this.

He peeked his head up again to make sure the Garchean was in the same position (he was, and he was waiting with his gun aimed in the direction) and then he took a yet-unbroken bottle and flung it in the direction of the Garchean. There was a thud, and an "Ooof!" but then unexpectedly there was a gunshot from the direction of the backparlour door. Jean didn't wait to think about this distraction - he leapt over the bar in one, smooth jump and dashed over at the Garchean.

The Garchean, a little stunned by the bottle hitting him, and the gunshot from the direction his friend went, tried to aim at Jean but missed. He pulled trigger again at the last second, his gun aiming right at Jean's chest. There was a click. The gun was empty. He let out one curse before Jean's rapier struck him in the stomach.

"Any last words?" Jean asked sardonically.

The Garchean spit into Jean's face.

Jean brought the revolver in his free hand down on the Garchean's head. The Garchean collapsed like a sack doll onto the ground. Now to find Paul, Jean was thinking to himself when he heard footsteps from the main entrance.

A tall Loubetian with an eyepatch and a black mustache walked in, and aimed a pistol at Jean.

"Drop it," the Loubetian told him.

"Wait," came another voice, from behind the Loubetian. A well-bred Saxesian walked in, with fair blond hair and a well-groomed mustache - and an eyepatch over his left eye. "Don't shoot him. He may be of use."

"He killed Gullie!" hissed the tall Loubetian.

"That just shows how capable he was," the eyepatched man said. He stepped closer to Jean and held his hand out in a symbol of peace. "Set your weapons down and walk outside with me." He looked at the ceiling. "This place will collapse any second now," he said calmly. "You wouldn't want this to be your grave."

No Jean thought to himself. No, I wouldn't want this place to be my grave.

******

Rafael stood over the dead body of a short Loubetian in the back parlour hallway. He had been right before - someone had come running after them. That meant that someone had been watching them very carefully during the fight in the tavern, lending more weight to his theory. The short man was easily dispatched, though. A well-timed shot in the back, and then a knife across the throat to silence him was all that was needed. It was always a shame to kill one of his country-men, but it couldn't have been avoided.

Well, there was no point in waiting for his friends to come looking for him, so Rafael set down the hallway where all of the others had went. He came out into the stables, and watched the bow-tied man mount the Horse, and observed the stranger talking to the Saxesian. This threw a wrench in his plans, but no matter. He counted the horses and the number of people.

"Ah! Ah! Zehr are not enough horses for all of us I am afraid. Mayhaps I can ride with one uv you, my old friends?" He looked from the bow-tied man to the mechanic.

Edmond pulled back on the reins as he heard the foreign man speak. He turned around to him. He thought for a moment, then backed his horse up.

"Come on with me," he said, as he extended his hand down towards the foreigner.

Jacques' nose scrunched in a small, feminine way as he watched the men pour out of the mess at the inn.

One spoke, "Can we move it along, please?", and it was obvious that this was the mechanic Paul spoke of earlier. He was followed by another, rather sharply dressed--a high classed man?--in a suit and bow tie. It seemed like they were already prepared to head off, not bothering to linger around the stables for pointless chat, unlike Paul earlier.

When
Rafael came beside them, a foreigner, Jacques began to question this scenario. So all five of them, including himself, were meant to meet here with the Comtes? His face was blank, almost pleasant to head off but..in his mind it was oddly suspicious.

Jacques assumed that they were all going the same direction when no one questioned him but decided to go about the ordeal vaguely, and very casually. "I'm off my way now, have my own ride to my destination. Perhaps you'd like to join me?" He suggested to the man in uniform whom he had introduced himself to.

Paul watched as the mechanic approached in the company of three others. Jean, however, was not among them.

"I'm off my way now, have my own ride to my destination. Perhaps you'd like to join me?" he heard Jacques say.

An interesting request. Though the mechanic was likey to have the quickest means of transport, Paul did not know of his plans or destination. Jacques was the only man, other than Jean, whom Paul knew was working toward the benefit of the Comte. Paul decided it would be best to remain in this man's company.

"I'll take you up on your offer," Paul said, wheeling his horse around to face Jacques, "I feel there is much to be gained by sticking together."

He lightly snapped the reins on his horse, making a slow path toward Jacques.

"By the way," he said when he had reached his new companion, "My name is Paul-Henri Lefèvre. I think we'll be spending quite a bit of time together."

OOC: sorry to control your character a bit doll.

IC: Everyone having mounted a horse, the party rode quickly back to the road. Suddenly, through the smoke and burning of the inn, Jacques saw a blond man with an eyepatch standing in the doorway. The man saw him at the same moment, and gave a shout, pointing his revolver in the air and discharging it.

As Jacques strove to control his horse, which had been startled by the loud noise, he saw at least five horsemen emerge from the woods not thirty feet away behind them. One of them pointed a revolver at him, as he came onto the road, and fired, narrowly missing Jacques' head.

Jacques gave a shout, and Rafael turned his head, and she heard him mutter some foreign curse. He pulled out a weapon, intending to shoot at the man in the doorway, but the man had already stepped back into the inn.
