Default The Fallen - Strategy

Yep, in roars another game in these halls!

This game is The Fallen (http://www.the-fall.net/Index.aspx). A new strategy browser-game released for beta on May 27th. The Fallen was undergoing an earlier closed alpha test, as for how long, I do not know.

(I am Ivan in-game. My planet is here: Mulsuntar if you are wondering and its not a referral link.)

The Fallen has an in-depth storyline revolving around three human factions that were once united in an galactic encompassing empire that collapsed and now war ravages the galaxy. So a fairly routine storyline but does provide plenty of potential of fodder for role-players.

The game-mechanics themselves are fairly simple. You have only one planet, you cannot colonise other planets. There is no galactic map, but there is a tactical map for battles over your planet and others. The game updates once every eight hours after which you can collect your finances in the form of credits. Another thing is that every aspect of the game can be upgraded by purchasing improvements with credits.

You also can advance your civilisation by 'advancing' Eras. The equivalent of technology which unlocks further units and improvements at least. Although you need certain amount of infrastructure to be able to advance an Era - of which no one has been able to do yet.

You develop your planet by building five types of infrastructure:
Communications: Increases the power of your military forces
Industry: Increases the income generated by your citizens
Military: Increases the amount of military forces you may deploy
Transportation: Increases your trade income
Civilian: Determines how much population you gain after each update

The military aspect is the most interesting. There are only five types of units you can build as of now. Fighters, Battleships, Infantry, Main Battle Tanks, and anti-matter weapons. The last being a superweapon that causes a large amounts of damage, but also requires a high Era rating.

*note: this next section is derived from the manual and by poking through the options available. I haven't fought an actual battle yet.

Battles unfold on a tactical map with a 5x5 tiles size with your--or an allied or enemies--planet in the lower-right corner occupying six tiles. A fleet or army occupies one square and you may only deploy five fleets or armies per map. The battles in space involves either bombarding your enemies planet to destroy infrastructure or landing ground troops to raid and destroy infrastructure - provided you can break through fleet defenses. Ground battles play out much like space battles.

The game is built towards alliance game-play however. Solo-players will definitely have a very difficult time should alliances choose to start raiding unaligned players. Each alliance has an alliance bank and may set a tax-rate to build-up the bank funds. Alliance members may request funds from the alliance bank. Alliance-wide improvements may be built as well. Currently there are only a handful of alliances.

With all that said, I have some small starter-tips for those who wish to play.
  • Only purchase trade infrastructure in the beginning; it yields the greatest income.
  • Never purchase infrastructure in less then batches of 10. Buying infrastructure in small amounts raises the prices far quicker than buying in larger amounts. I would recommend buying in 20 or more, at the very least, 10.
  • Don't bother buying any military-related stuff until the fifth or six day. You cannot be attacked until after seven days have passed.
  • Raise your trade infrastructure level to atleast 70 before you start purchasing anything else.
  • It is possible to play as an unaligned planet right now, but if there are too many alliances and if they raid unaligned players. Good luck, you'll need it. So I recommend on joining an alliance that suits your tastes if you intend on playing.

And now for shameless blatant recruiting!

I decided to found an alliance called Altair to see how it goes. We are an autocratic-meritocracy that focuses on camaraderie between our members.

If you want to check us out, our forum may be found here: Altair Forums

If you decide to play The Fall, PM me in-game when you start playing. I want to know on how many people join from this forum.

Good-luck!
