I would be starting anytime soon, and would like any feedback as to what class would be newbie friendly. Any opinion would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

All the mains have pretty decent uses in PVE and PVP, so you can't really go wrong. Since Atlantica puts you in control of 9 characters, I guarantee you that whatever main you pick you will be able to put together an effective PVE and PVP formation. Although from my experiences, Sword mains seem to be pretty uncommon in PVP, so you might want to steer away from that.
I personally play a Cannon Main and I'm having fun with it. Staff and musician mains seem to both be really popular right now though. As for formation, for the beginning levels you don't really have much of a choice as to what mercs you use. It doesn't really matter, so you can just do what most people do and get one of each. (Sword, Spear, Gunner/Archer, then later on add a Shaman at level 10 and a Monk at level 20). Beyond that I would really need to know what main you pick in order to recommend a formation. I'm only Lvl 60 (been getting back into other games) but I play on Thebes, feel free to add my on Xfire.

Thanks very much for the informative reply ^_^. I have another question, the Staff is the support character, right? Well, I usually play support classes so.. there.

staff usually a support type but you can use it as an attacker since the main skill of the staff users are Eva scud its an AoE. right now since we have now new patch and new updates to all mercenaries and characters, if im not mistaken they increase it slightly...

Even though you're playing a "support" main its not going to feel that way because eventually you'll have a team of 9 characters. If you don't play a staff main, you're going to have a healer anyway. What you have to consider is, what does the main have that the mercenary equivalent can't deliver?
Elite is right though, most Staff users utilize this skill called Evanescent Scud, which is a pretty good AoE attack.

I learned that some merc skills are available for main characters only like the guard dispel and the devastation shell. Unfortunately, I learned it when I bought guard dispel and tried to use it on my spearman merc. It said that the skill is for main only. I wish there is a list where I can see the skill list so I'll know what skills to get.

Back when it was in Beta i played, I was an Axe and had a ton of fun and its very PvP friendly, a Bow is really good for PvP as well and if you build the staff correctly it's absolutely devastating. ign: lvl 6x Axe ~ Dartus ... but i dont play anymore =D
