Just want to let yo know beforehand this is a very serious topic I thought I'd ask you guys about. I would gladly love for those who are finished or are currently enrolled in the career they have chosen for there life to just maybe post some things for me.
Well, I just had a talk with my family, and it came from eating dinner to a serious how's everything going talk? My brother is taking his school for doctoring through most needle work. Then they kinda looked at me, and said you should start thinking, and make sure you work hard this last year, I'm gonna be a senior in high school now. Most of my friends are set, they know this and that and all this University stuff, and SATs. Me? I'm not doing none of that, don't get me wrong I'm not a bad student, it's just I haven't took the responsibility to think of what's ahead of me, because well, I don't think I'm ready or want to. I have no idea what career I want to take. I even had the crazy thought of becoming apart of the game creating branch, like maybe a 3d designer or programming, but I soon think what will my life be like doing that? Will I be a lunk stuck in game forever? If your a young one like me have you decided? How did you choose what you wanted to become? Are you enjoying it if your currently in it, or are done with it? Any and all extra comments about careers and life? Thanks for reading, even though this shxts long haha. |

Well, a lot of teachers, beforehand, recommend you to take courses that look and sound the most appealing. If something interests you, take up on it and do it. If something doesn't, than don't matter. That's highly beneficial for you, especially since you say that you don't know what to do or where to go.
Speak to your guidance office or counsil, whatever you have there, and they could recommend things to you. List your strengths and weaknesses to further see what you could be leaning towards to. |

You know a lot of kids go to a university/college as "Major: Undecided". They get to choose a variety of classes (rather than following classes needed for a major, like how I have to take 5 specific Interior Design classes, no electives). They're just getting their required credits, and through those classes figure out what they want to do, what they're into, or really interested in pursing after a year. Your first year of school everyone says isn't a big deal. You're taking care of your general requirements like math and english. This is why a lot of people go to community college their first year instead of a university, just get those credits. I had two universities in mind, just because one was a convenient location, and the other I got a hella good scholarship. I didn't know what major to pick; it's thrown at you. So I just went for something that'd seem interesting. I can draw, I like an art environment, thinking of a career I went with int. design. Now I'm not even sure if I want to do that. I'd rather be in fashion but a normal general university doesn't offer that. Also, I came to realize the Int. Design majors are all snot-azsed girls who have no interest in art, no ability or experience in even having a drawing class, and it makes me want to kill myself. Go to a school, don't worry about it, find out what type of class you are super into and you can alwaysalways change your major. |

Dear doll,
I was wondering, if this is a good route too, you see, i'm doing pretty bad in highschool right now (2.6 gpa) tho i'm still planning to graduate. I was wondering if going to a community college for 2 years and then transfering to an UC is a good route. Will i still have as much options of jobs when transfering from a community college? Or is going to a 4 year university/calstate better>

BIG STORY OF TEXT I went into my first year of college not knowing what i wanted to study. I had interests in computers mostly going in. First semester i took College Algebra, History 1, University Seminar, and Psychology. Second Semester I had English 1, Geology/Lab, Computer Science/Lab, and Intro to Music. Comp Sci ended up being the most boring class i have ever taken in my life. School wise i love computers and sciences but that class was a pain to go to. Not to sound corny/gay but i fell in love with Geology. Science was a strong point for me and high school/ever so naturally i excelled in it. During the middle of my second semester, i declared my major as Geoscience with concentration in Geology. My major is a tough load but i am strongly looking forward to the challenge. It involves lots of high end math and an abundance of different classes/labs. Also picked up a summer class which is a 2 week hiking/camping trip to Oregon to look at mountains and volcanoes mostly. END STORY WALL OF TEXT Just go with your gut of what will hold your interest for learning and for a career after you get out of college. EDIT: also...lulz at my title under my name being Rock Man and me being a Geology major. Last edited by Madfox; 06-19-2009 at 06:13 AM. |

If you arent sure what you want to study, might I suggest try a two year college before going to a four year.
The only thing that might suck about going to a two year before a four year is the money. But two year credits are somewhat inexpensive and it is a good way to see if you can actually handle more school. Plus it gives you a chance to decide what you want to major in before spending a metric crapton of money on a four year. I was the opposite and went to a four year to get my Bachelor's Degree, then I went to a two year to get an Assosciate's Degree in a different field. Crappy thing, I have two degrees and I never once used them in the real world ![]() oh edit- If your parents make under a certain amount of income, you might be able to apply for a grant as well, depending on the grant, you can pretty much get all of your tuition, books, and some supplies paid for, without having to pay it back ala student loans. If your parents do make over the alloted amount, you can always take a nice break from school and wait til you are 25 when you are legally no longer claimed by your parents (income/tax wise) you can get said grant that way as well. dear doll,
you are so correct. experiment by taking electives (in HS and college) u think u are interested in. u can do this is universities also, not just 2 year colleges obviously. and yes transferring form a 2 year college to a university is perfectly ok and their is no disadvantage, its even recommended for many ppl. jobs rarely even look at what school you went to, unless its sum big time school like Harvard, as long as u have the degree. my teachers constantly talked about this, some who went to 2 year colleges then transferred said that they are so happy they did because it taught them slower than a university, wasnt as much distraction, and they would have flunked out of a university if they went straight to one. it was good prep. 2 year college are just smaller and more "community-like" so there will be more individual attention and less distraction. ps. business is the major everyone takes when they don't know what they want to do lol, because it is so broad. no wonder its the most popular major in the country. |

Well what I wanted to do with my life changed a lot especially in high school. In my earlier days I wanted to be a Pilot, but that wouldn't be smart cause I wear glasses.
Then I wanted to be an English Teacher, but that wouldn't be smart since I generally hate people. So after a few years of not knowing what to do I eventually broke down and gave up on anything special. I'll probably just open up a cafe somewhere and live paycheck to paycheck like most Americans do, and I'm honestly fine with that.Ok so enough about me lets talk about you! If you don't know what you wanna do exactly, perhaps you should take a lot of career tests and then research the careers that the tests tell you would be good for you! College wise you could always do a general study at a community college for a few years then after you've decided on a major then move onto a University.Hmm but don't push yourself into anything........if it takes time to decided then take the time you need to make the decision. Also maybe you don't have to go to college. You might enjoy a job that only requires a certificate.
