I am LDS. What seem to be the questions? Sorry if I was too late, just if anyone got any other questions go ahead and ask me. I was reading some of the posts and I couldn't help but nod at most of them.
NOTE: Just because I am still a member does't mean I know it all, I might not know all the answers but I will answer as much as I can and if there is something I can't answer I can always ask another member. I don't actually spend my 24/7 lifetime leaning to the church, but I do go on daily Sundays and do what I have to do to an extent that I agree and decide to follow certain rules. I am 19 and I have been a member ever since I was 8.

Before I take any other questions I'll say a couple of things. First of all, what is a Christian? What do we believe in? Ask yourself those questions then you can decide if we are Christians or not.
Anything that we do in the church, ask members to do, or perform... NOTHING is mandatory, everything that is done in church is by choice, if you choose not to then that's as far as it goes.

Now, Polygamy. I know that nobody in here will ever understand unless you are actually a member of the church and know the story of Joseph Smith, other than that, all I have to say to you guys about it is that it was a law that was used as a good cause(Something called "Spreading the good seed"). This law was only applied to the Prophet of the church, and no other member, other than that it was considerated for for an actual member to be part of it, but only if it was necessary. But after some time, since it was a law, some of the members started taking it in consideration for themselves and used it for their own desire and wants, and since it was getting out of hand and it was no longer used for a good cause, the church banned it and never brought it back. Other members that still decided to do it and continued on performing this were excommunicated(Banned from the religion). If you guys want to know more let me know, right now I wont be able to be here, but I will get back to this thread asap. If you guys don't like my timing, sorry but I can't be here all day long.

Edit: Also the name is not Mormon, it is actually LDS(Latter Day Saints). We only have the name Mormons because other people decided to call us Mormons due to our book's name a very long time ago. And no, The Book Of Mormon is not our Bible, The book of Mormon is the Book of Mormon. We believe that Jesus not only came to the middle east, but also in America, which is where the Book of Mormon comes from. Yes we believe in the Bible, the Bible or the Book of Mormon cannot be separated, they come in hand to hand together(They in a way help each other out).

even though i have my own views on religon i thought i'd say that at the end of the day if they;re a nice person who gives a flying gypsy what they choose to believe :P

and i'm sorry but i have to comment about god saying i'm not a liar etc.

The bible wasn't written by god, it was written by a bunch of guys who all have different interpretations of how Jesus lived and how people should live.

and as much as southpark is amusing and offensive there was a message in one of their episodes i completely agreed with.

It was the Easter one called "Hair club for men" where at the end of it a christian priest says to the rabbit "how should we live through Christ"

the rabbit gives no reply being its a friggin rabbit and the puzzled priest turns to his colleague and says "the rabbit isn't telling me how to live" and his colleague replies "just how jesus intended it"

Not only was it written by a bunch of guys it was written in a bunch of languages, translated over and over into hundreds of languages, that's why a bunch of it doesn't make sence.

But I agree with what you are saying here.

I also liked the speech at the end of the South Park LDS episode.

i agree that was also amusing but so true.

I actually think alot of people miss the messages southpark actually has.

but my feelings on religon is that its been approached completely the wrong way and is still about power instead of basically making you a better person.

i actually had a similar conversation with my girlfriend about this and the amount we agreed on was actually surprising because i'm agnostic and she is catholic/christian(i forget which one rofl)

one thing i really hate is all these religious wars and my work mate is Indian and was raised in a Hindu family but the kicker is he went to a catholic school and was best friends with a Muslim, he is also married to a white christian lady(who is lovely) and the story amuses me because it essentially screws up alot of the religious rules people seem to think they think they must obey.

I know ive kinda expanded the topic to basic religion but no one knows which religion is right if any of them are which is why i think alot of religious battles and whatnot makes it alot less appealing for people who like to analyze stuff like myself.

Actually we are Christians. We follow Christ, we preach of Christ. We do all things through Christ. As do other Christians I believe. That's what makes them Christians. (=

Not sure if any religion could be summed down to a nutshell. But if I were to do it I would be sure to take the exact references from it's texts or be certain my facts were straight.
Yes, Joseph Smith did find the golden plates, but he was not a man. He was a 14 year old boy. The golden tablets had many instructions written upon them by the first people to be on this continent. These people lived around the time the Tower of Babel was destroyed and fled here. Another set of people fled here during the times of Jeremiah. These tablets however did not contain instructions for him. He couldn't even obtain the plates for some time after finding them. He was an uneducated boy who was educated by angels. And by way of commandment translated what was on them through the power of God and His instruction so we could have the record we have today. Which in it's entirety is what constitutes an ancient record of the dealings of an ancient peoples who dwelt here in the Americas. Containing their dealings with eachother, their covenants with the Lord and their commandments from Him.
The tablets were never lost. Some of the written translation was lost during the time of translation which Joseph was rebuked for. The plates however were never lost. After translation they were taken by the angel Moroni. Although we don't have them today there were eye witnesses who Joseph was allowed to show the plates to, 8 of them, who's witness we have signed in the beginning portion of what we call the Book of Mormon today. There are also written testimony of 3 eye witnesses who the angel Moroni showed the plates. Their witness can also be found under the BoM's cover. And we also have the witness of Joseph Smith Jr.
Actually they are brothers as are we all. We all were created by the same God and lived with him before the foundations of the Earth. Once Lucifer rebelled he was cast out along with the 1/3 of heaven that followed him. They are the spirits who tempt and taunt the children of men today. Who will never receive bodies to go through the trials of life in.
The afterlife isn't much different. But I know that I cannot raise myself from the dead nor can anyone nor did Jesus nor do I have in my power or will ever have a power to say who ultimately gets resurrected. In fact, every person who has ever lived on the face of the Earth or lives or ever will live on it will be resurrected. But not all will be resurrected to the same state. As far as going to far off planets to start a race of our own. This is all speculation and priestcraft which creeps it's way in through imagination and has no part in scripture.
Yes, members of the church that attend the temple wear garments. And I would not know about trying to leave the church. You can have your name blotted out I'm sure.
Interesting that you end your unbiased whatever this is with something like this. If you go a little bit more into it though. Look at the testimony of the black people in Africa that were awaiting baptism that couldn't for many years. What held them together so long. There had to be something to drive them and keep them. As well as the early pioneers of the church that suffered so greatly and paid such a great price to give us the model of what a saint should be.

Funny thing is. No one really digs up any dirt or "tries" with many other religions. I guess they are perfect...God's word is perfect men's words are not nor is the fabric(religion) which holds them(men) together. I do however believe that "Morminism" is the most correct. Anyone truly seeking to find out are entitled that same witness.

I think the only way to see that is if you were neither Christian nor LDS.

To those who came to this thread in hopes to learn more about latter day saints and what they hold dear in their hearts feel free to PM me and we can talk. I however don't suggest letting people who have no testimony of these things share them with you. For example take someone who peers through the Bible looking for falacy and error to "prove it's error." For one, the Holy Spirit is not going to to be able to touch his/her heart. If he/she were sincerely seeking truth perhaps then the spirit may touch that persons heart. Anyways. thanks for the OP's honest opening of the thread. Beware of any people that bear their though opinionated but false testimony/facts about what you hear of the church. That which you practice is truly the only way to dissern whether it be of God or the Devil. We have a truth. Whatever persuadeth a man to do good and believeth in Christ is of God and is good. Such can be applied to anything pertaining to it. You don't go to a football player and ask him how to play baseball. No didn't think so. (= Again, takes a lot more than 1 post and several lines of text to sum up our beliefs. But if you really want to know their is a written summary of them in what's called the articles of faith. What you said was succinct and well-written and I respect you for that.

But it's incorrect to suggest that people don't try to dig "dirt" up on other religions, you can even look at modern times with protests against Scientology or Catholicism. Hell there are even blockbuster movies and books about Catholic dirt.

The LDS church actually gets off pretty light, other religions are pretty tolerant of the religion as a whole.

I also think it's dangerous for you to suggest that the OP only listens to people who are faithful to the church, because yes you're correct that you don't want to hear from the person looking to discredit the Bible, but you don't want the other extreme the person who's looking to prove the Bible is true.

In order for anybody to make an honest, faithful decision it's good for them to hear what all kinds of people have to say to make an informed decision - and that is just common logic, it can be applied to anything - even religion.

While I don't believe the church is true I'm thankful for my heritage and that I was raised in it, I'm thankful for the pioneers and I'm thankful that it continues to bring my family joy, and I will always be there to answer questions the best that I can and debunk myths and rumors and stuff.

Also, the football guy would know how to play baseball, just trust me on this one.
