Im kinda suprised i didn't see Cryengine 3 on the list, its a solid engine for graphics and physics and not hard to get into. It's free for non commercial use.
http://www.crydev.net/dm_eds/download_detail.php?id=4 For 3d modelling characters zbrush is really good, once you learn to use it its a really good program for sculpting characters, it's easy to unleash your creativity without worrying too much about the polycount because you can change the subdivisions easily. Making a skeleton with z-spheres and sculpting on top of it with a wacom is like sketching a character, but in 3d definitely worth the money.
