Honestly? Well because it reminds me of my old SNES/Genesis times when i had to have a Friend over to play co-op For example....
Streets of rage,Sonic,ninja turtles in time,Mickey mouse and mini circu fun crap,toejam and earl,Contra,batman.....

its like im a kid all over again but i get to enjoy it with all you guys/girls (NO HOMO)

With them having to spend less money on the game engine, and less time on it as 2D games are easier to code then 3D... they have more time to work on gameplay, and features.
Although this doesn't apply for most 2D games, it does for a few out there... and that is why I like 2D games. The gameplay.

as stated, nostalgia like in streets of rage, old genesis games, the fact that I actually have to do stuff to win, not just roll the dice over and over, or have UBER GEAR
