The game is great, especially if you like DnD, Neverwinter nights, Baldurs Gate, Icewind dale(heck even Planescape: Torment, although that isn't a part of Forgotten realms).

The combat is made so you press the left mouse button to hit, it gives a bit of an actiony feeling, really cool. The skill and item stats system might be confusing at first, but if you can be arsed to read on basic DnD(4.0 is it?) rules, you won't have trouble getting into the game.

Dungeons are wonderful, challenging(since you can't just restore hp and mana whenever or wherever you want), theres a lot of puzzles and some thinking and searching to do, so it's not only killing mobs and grind. There's also some Gamemaster storytelling while you're doing the dungeon, gives you the feeling that you're playing the dnd board game with your friends.
Theres 20 levels, it takes 5 ranks to achieve a new level(you get alot of xp via quests or just by completing dungeons).

Classes are not your standard ones, even though there's a warrior and a mage, you'll still see classes like bards, monks, barbarians, clerics...
There's even multiclassing(haven't done much research on that).

Community doesn't have to be big for such a game, although I'm expecting to see a lot of players when DDO hits OB.

There's not that much difference between a payed account and a free account and as some already posted, you can get most of the items a payed account has with Favour points which you get by completing stuff/quests ingame.
More info about differences between a normal and paid account on the link below

Yes, everyone starts over, you'll still have your account though.

I don't think there's an "assassin" but you can be a rogue.

It would be more of combination of classes. More than likely it would be a rogue/monk or rogue/monk/ranger.

With multiclassing, you can think of several ideas of gameplay.

Its somewhat based on 3.5 ed. And reading the books wont really help you, you're better off just reading the DDO Wiki, and looking at what other people have been posting as builds.

Here's a link to the compendium, http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Compendium_Home
