Alright. Any ideas? Anyone? I know there's only like 10 or so of us who actually visit this section with any regularity, so I'd like to hear your guys' ideas of what we could do make this section a lil' more popular. Hold a workshop for the rest of the forum, maybe?
Gimme your ideas!

We could have a contest of game ideas. I don't know what the prize would be, but every so often, have a contest where people put game designs up on the forums, and the best one as voted on by I guess whoever comes by gets the prize.
This just came to me. |

Hmmm. Posting game ideas is an interesting idea, but we get a lot of those already, and most of them aren't really that well thought out (Game Dev Classifieds). I'm happy to do it, but I dunno what the prize would be really.
I'd be happy to hold some sort of contest, the prize being hosting for the game on the forums; I'm sure we could do that. The only problem I can think of is that there wouldn't be enough applicants. Most people who frequent here can't really make games... maybe we can have a Game Maker thing going down? That's pretty simple to use, and could attract some people... You know what; I like this idea. Maybe we could combine your guys' two ideas into one; the idea for a relatively simple game posted first, voted on, then another group of applicants makes it in Game Maker, or some other equally simple game making suite, or if they really want to, a real language? Whatd'you think?

Sounds like Project Top Secret from Acclaim. Lets do it!
*Downloads Game Maker* EDIT: Will PBBG text games be allowed in? EDIT 2: Should this be promoted over at Yoyo games? Last edited by firesnowball; 08-07-2009 at 01:53 PM. |

if I could make a suggestion *catface*
I know that on the realmcrafter forums someone recently posted an idea about all community participants voting on a theme, and then we form groups of like 2 or 4 and make a game based on that theme in 2 weeks (still voting on time ). What about something like that? It'd have to be 2D though cause I don't think we have a lot of 3D Modellers who haven't been hired yet

@FSB 1. PBBG text games? Depends on the theme or game design idea that gets voted on, I guess. But if it fits; I'd say yes, why not? 2. Hmmm... I guess we probably should. Can't see how it would hurt; though the prize of hosting it on the forums probably wouldn't exactly be alluring if people come from Yoyo games just to enter this contest.

For prizes why don't we find a few modellors who sell commercially or some graphic artists who do the same and try and convince them to make a few of their pieces into prizes. It'd work both ways by giving contestants a motive for winning and giving the artists a form of nearly free advertising, like a sponsership.

Problem is; there's not a whole lot of commercial-level modelers or graphics artists around here, and if there are, generally stuff that's good enough to be used as a prize would probably cost something, and I'm 100% absolutely flat broke.

Competition may just be strong enough incentive for some.
Perhaps it could be held regularly, a scoreboard could be kept, and judges trial each game, for certain factors, gameplay, design and maybe two more factors, that can apply across any game. (otherwise a graphics rating would of course have a advantage over text based) It could lead to a finale, where the person with the most point wins, perhaps a bit of software or something. The only problem is if people who took part previously did not take part again, and some people do have an advantage in many way of development to always produce a good rated game. Perhaps its a bit too adventurous at this time. |
