Ok, so when it comes to Linux... I have never even touched the OS. I want to host a dedicated server, and I don't want to use windows. So can anyone here give me a little guide for Linux? Just mainly where to get it and how to install it.
It would also be helpful if you included a link to a distribution or something. The server I want to run is for "Linux i386 - 32bit" if that makes a difference at all. Any help anyone could offer would be great! |

^_^ Anyway, ubuntu is one of the best distros for a beginner. As for installing, thats preatty straight forward. If you've installed windows, you can install linux.

I would highly reccomend you try a Live! CD before you try fully installing it. You might not like it, and you may become frustrated. Also, when you install the full verison, be sure to make a partition so you have access to Windows via GRUB.
Ubuntu is a really nice OS, as it has many cool auto-scripts that installs most multimedia functions, WINE, etc. Kubuntu is basically Ubuntu running on KDE, not Gnome. Many people use it for the eyecandy. But if you want eyecandy, you might as well use OS X. For servers, Suse is your best bet. That or FreeBSD, but that isn't Linux. http://www.freebsd.org/ For personal use, Fedora Core and Redhat are both great. If you want a complete replica of Windows version of Linux, Linspire is for you, although it is commercial. Once you get experienced, try googling Debian. |

Debian is definitely cool. I used to use it before Dapper Drake. But, when I first started using it, it was just so vague and basic I couldn't understand it. I'm not sure if the current release of Debian is more user-friendly, but when I was 12, it sure as hell wasn't.

PC Linux OS has Live CDs, too.
Should be one of the easier Linux distros. I think Debian is to hard for beginners, thats why im using suse. but i dont think suse is the best distro, it has some bugs. |
