viruses cannot be hidden in your ram, it's temporary Random Access Memory.

So I asked him (one of the IT nerds) and he replied:

A virus that hides itself in the ram can remain in the ram after a warm reset (ctrl alt del). This happens due to the fact the ram is still supplied with power. By shutting the pc down for a while you are sure the power on the pc parts is away and the ram is clear from any memory on it. Some sites even advise to remove the power cable or laptop batteries to be sure.
Then you can boot the pc and format your HDD, prefferably from a disc.
Then shut down your pc for a while again and reinstall windows to be sure the virus did not remain on your HDD.
And trust me, this is a legit source that can be trusted.

it says the memory can still be flushed after everything's shut down, so still no, viruses still can't really bury themselves into the ram.

source please.

Give me your e-mail and I'll ask him to send an English version of the mail he sent me.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...4?OpenDocument

Dutch version though, but it clearly says to shut your pc down for 15 seconds or longer at point 2 of the Emergency Boot Disk part. Ask someone (or use a translator) to translate it if you don't believe me.
