Do you think elitism is a major problem for the MMO industry and community? I think it is most certainly is, and it severely threatens the continued growth of the hobby. A hobby that cannot attract new members eventually withers and dies. The current culture of noob hostility is frequent comic fodder, but there is a very serious underlying problem.
I blogged about it here - MMO Elitism - A Major Problem for the Industry - but you don't necessarily need to read it to share your thoughts and opinions. What can we do as members of the MMO community to put a stop to it? Do you think we even need to? |

See.. New players are ok while they're new, but after you hit say lvl 30-40 you're expected to know how to do things and not expect higher lvls to aid you constantly. Elitism is a good thing for mmorpgs because it makes newbs strive to play better. Without elitism we'd have a game full of content that never gets touched.

I don't see the problem. Every game has a learning curve. If you are trying to do end game content and you don't have the proper knowledge and gear to be anything other than a burden, then you should either stay out of that area until you acquire the knowledge and items necessary.
Just like a relay team isn't going to let someone on who's a slow runner, a raid party isn't going to baby a player that doesn't know how to play the game. Raiding isn't exactly a "casual" activity. It requires a substantial amount of time and devotion to a game to be able to do it successfully, and a person unwilling or unable to devote that time shouldn't complain that they aren't included. This really applies to any game...for example, I get raped in CS by people who play several hours or more a day because I barely play the game. But there's really no cause for complaint if I don't have the time to put in. |

Yes, people are expected to learn the game after playing awhile. Elitism is, say...Something like this: Guy 1: Looking for More, X raid! Guy 2: I'll come! Guy 3: let me in noob *guy 1 looks at guy 2 and 3's stats...Guy 3 has 2 more stamina than guy 2, but is a jackass* *Guy 1 invites guy 3* PM - Guy 1 to Guy 2: U Fckin noob get l2p gawd u hav low stamina u noob gtfo diaf. |
