I wish that were true. But honestly, getting private servers going is a pretty difficult task.

It may actually have been easier in the past when less of the data stream was encrypted and there was a higher concentration of technically skilled players on your average MMO.

Both true. Check the link to the EnB Emulator in my sig (proven many times by mods not to be in forum violation due to EA not currently supporting any space based mmo).

EnB had a huge fan base, a fan base that was crushed when EA bought out Westwood and decided very shortly after that they would shift most of the Westwood resources to Ultima Online development. EA cared very little about the game and allowed it to reach a state where many would assume EA's actions were right when they closed EnB.

4-5 years later, an Emulator is still in development. EA has made no lawsuit against the emulator developers; however, have helped them in no way either.

It's been in beta a few times, and data development is going slowly, relying on item and xp curves based on fan formulas from years ago.

The Earth and Beyond private server project is a great example. I have followed it for years and am part of the mailing list for the game, but it is still struggling. There are some really smart people on the team, but as far as I know there is basically still no playable version of the game.

Earth and Beyond and Tabula Rasa are two defunct games I really wish I could still fire up and fly/run around in.

By the way...

What do you guys think will be the next MMO to die?

Warhammer?

Ultima Online?

Star Wars Galaxies? (I don't see how this game can survive the release of Star Wars the Old Republic).

The worst MMOs will die off due to bad gameplay, execution, etc. Matrix Online was just a flat out bad game in general, so it failed.

While that may be true, it is pretty clear that thousands of people still loved it.

It is good for our industry if we find a way to at least let those people continue to enjoy the game they paid for. Even if hosting a login server is totally at their own expense.

Like some people said: Pservers. A Pserver community will eventually pick it up sooner or later, or the server files will get leaked/sold after some time too.

It is a very good topic and as i loved the matrix online , i can tell what we had done .

As SOE announce the shut down for the Matrix Online , i know that we cannot accpet this, that we cannot enter again the Matrix.

Most people said before "worth gameplay" etc. but that are the same people who playing stupid and boring free2play asia grinding game ? i think so

Back to the topic :
if you favorite game will shut down and you are announced to the deadline, you have to react then.

In our case, me and another person started to figure out how the matrix online works...well we had not much luck in the first month (we had 2 months until shutdown), but we got some help from the old mxosim dev who has broken a part of the encryption (the world).

The next weeks our small team spents time with it, to figure out how encryption in auth and character server works.

And the team does a good job :
- 3 days before deadline has ended, encryption was complete broken and the a packet sniffer (that directly decrypts the packets and store them in a log file) was ready to use.

We had at all a much of luck, as i didnt believed the last days that this will be possible then we released the sniffer and the modified files to some peoples who start sniffing and capturing (and they sniffed a lot of informations including the end).

After mxo went down, some days later the first "one player jacking and packet testing" version was released.

Now we are working on the new server code , and have found out a lot.

So for us , mxo will never be complete dead , and we are going step by step to bringing mxo back - if possible, as complete as it was.

----

Well this is atm the only possibility you have if a game die.
I think it should give a "law" for games that going to be shut down, to release server code (just as binary is ok) , if they dont want to support this game in the future.

SWG : this is not the complete same story, but the SWG Project has an anothe reason. They want a server who has the "unwanted" changes from SOE rolled back.

It is something, that i would like too in mxo, if it would be possible to have a "Pre-CR2" Version.
