Default Integrated Sound Device Issues

I recently bought a new gaming rig, and I've been trying to get the audio to work.

The motherboard is a K8N-SLI-F, with Realtec AC'97 ACL850 integrated card.
I've tried all the possible device drivers from the manufacturers website, as well as the ones from the motherboards website.

Is there any reason why my sound still isn't working?

EDIT: Forgot to add, my OS is Windows XP Professional SP3.

Do you see a little brownish, mahogany-ish colored speaker on your toolbar, or your lower right hand corner?

No, I believe that should only show up for the HD audio devices (Or so I've heard)

I see the normal speaker, indicating that the driver's have been installed and SHOULD be working. As well as the blue square with the realtek logo inside. (That mixer that comes with it.)

It won't work with my speakers, nor with a headset and I've done all I can think of to try and fix it.

Actually, it says HD on mine, even thought I'm using AC' 97. Also, your problem is no sound even though you have drivers, correct?

Indeed, I've installed the drivers from my motherboards website. I've tried the drivers from the Realtek website as well, but neither work.

I'm thinking I should just get a new sound card or just put in my old Sound Blaster Live card. Not sure if it's too old for my new computer though.

Hopefully there's some way to make this work instead of me having to go and buy a new card.

I've also checked the BIOS and the Audio is enabled for the on-board card.

Try reinstalling your drivers, from your manufacturer. I had an issue like yours, and luckily I didn't buy a gamer's sound card for like $80.. It fixed my issue, it might fix yours. I mean you might have receive a bad data file somewhere when you downloaded. If you did, if you built your computer, check if you plugged in the right cable.

I actually bought it off a friend of mine, and I might check the cables tomorrow morning.

When I play something in WMP, it shows that sound is player, just not out of the speakers. So I'm guessing something may be connected wrong or got disconnected on the way back to my house.

As for the drivers, I've reinstalled the damn things ten+ times and still no luck from that, i think its just a loose cable now that you mention it.

Thank you, I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

If the cable isn't the issue, I'm just going to go buy a Rocketfish or whatever the Soundblasters are called now.
