Play Lamb of God songs. Good for intermediates and strangely, you will develop a sense of rhythm if you're going for thrash/groove/metal thing. Helps with your fingers cause they frequently use scales in songs. But go for what's you, I was self taught for 3 years but took lessons for a few and have been playing for a total of 9 years. When you're at that time where you're just getting to know stuff but still figure stuff out. Play till you sweat alot, and trust me, YOU WILL SWEAT, practice really slow at first, then gradually increase the speed by 1. Buy a metronome, it's annoying but IT DOES HELP. Play more than one style whether it be pop, blues, death metal, jazz so your stlye of playing doesnt stagnate and it makes it easier for when you practice. Don't play songs you cannot handle, you will be very disappointed and it is VERY discouraging. 1 rule when buying gear, AMP FIRST before ever buying a guitar.

I played in 1 jazz fusion band, 2 Melodic Death Metal bands, 1 blues band and 1 gothic rock/metal band. I did singing in the blues, gothic rock and melodic death band (yes, clean vocals and growls). It makes playing really fun, when you first start, playing with a jam band is so inspiring.
