Default Language Restriction is too general.

Quote:
Rule No. 7 - Language Restrictions
  • Please make all posts in English. This makes moderation easier and also keeps the forums more sociable. Keep any other language to PM's. Repeat offenses will get 1 warning and may be permanently banned.
I got a warning for typing "お誕生日おめでとうございます。", which in English is the formal term of saying "Happy Birthday." in one of the Birthday threads.

I just wanted to say that the language rule is way too general on a forum that handles foreign games. I have seen people type in Spanish and I have seen Korean before but I get a warning for saying something in Japanese and I just feel this is ridiculous. I do understand that people shouldn't speak in another language on a regular basis and I agree with that. But getting a warning just because a mod can't read what I wrote in a pretty spamy thread to begin with is silly.

But eh just curious about everyone's opinion on the rule. ^^ Please share!

Obvious rule for obvious reasons, with obvious results.

Sorry m8, that it had to be you, but I would have warned(*) you all the same if it was up to me regardless of the situation.

(*) Or given you an infraction, w/e the one is that is timing out.

Well I mean I am fine with the warning.
I just think the rule should be rewritten.
Perhaps say "You can type in a different language but make sure to include an English translation.". If that was the new rule then sure it would make more sense.

Getting upset over a warning is ridiculous to begin with. Warnings are the equivalent of saying, "just don't do it again." We even give out warnings for stuff that don't break the rules simply because warnings are not considered a big deal. They're reminders, if nothing else. This is not ridiculous at all to receive a reminder for breaking the rules.

I disagree. It makes perfect sense that a forum will have one language chosen since members of that one language don't have to sort through a bunch of topics in languages they don't understand to find the topic they want to read. We experimented with making OnRPG a Spanish-specific board before, with a very common language like Spanish, and it failed anyway due to lack of activity.

As for whether I could read it or not is irrelevant. I can understand a modest amount of Spanish, and have given warnings to members who posted in Spanish even though I compeletly understood what they said. Rest assured that I do not have a pathological hatred of foreign languages that I must abuse my mod powers and pounish anyone who speaks a language that is not English. Rather, I have duties to perform, and this includes reminding people not to speak in English.

And that is exactly what a warning is. A reminder.

Also, this was the wrong forum. Be more careful where you post a topic, please. I went ahead and moved it to Suggestions & Feedback.

edit: Didn't see your latest post.

I can say, "yo quiero mordida," and say "Oh, happy birthday." Transliterated, it means "bite me," (although it really means "bribe me.") Sorry, but OnRPG is an English-only board and will likely remain that way. It just makes things easier for Staff and members alike. That you can't wish people in happy birthdays in languages you love is just something you'll have to live with, unfortunately.

Ok fine, my rebellious streak is satisfied!

I apologize to Xenonight2 and I will try my best to remember the rules.

Wow, so you openly admit to abusing your position as a moderator?

No.

We have explicit instructions from Administrators that if someone is just on the verge of breaking a rule, we are authorized to give them warnings to take a step back from that line they were about to cross.

You clearly stated that you give warnings for posts that do not break the rules
