not sure but mostly the only reason i can think of why an anime would stop following the manga is if the tv episodes release or catch up faster then the manga so the guys who made the old fma probably decided to make up their own story from a certain point. they did a pretty good job on that though imo.. most anime which have fillers or are not following the manga suck horible =p

meh just saw 27 (i know im late) but was sad to see most of the episode were flash backs. i guess they need more time to make a few good eps again
some interesting/weird things happened inbetween those flashbacks though (hohenheim has a twin brother? o.O whats his name? lol)

yes you can. they arent linked to eachother. however, i do got the feeling still that more got explained in the old FMA compared to the new FMA which seems to have more action.
