Default Interesting article on modern recording contracts

http://www.metalsucks.net/2009/10/01...cord-contract/

I'd quote the whole thing but there are lots of pictures and I don't feel like spending 20 minutes preparing it.

The guy who wrote the article is himself in a band btw

erm, not really. This guy is part of a band that releases their stuff independently. He's writing this for other people, not to complain about his own situation, which is actually a pretty good one.

Besides, I know I for one didn't know that this was how things were. I don't see the problem with writing an article giving people some information

not much to know that cant be known from common sense. Contracts = signing your soul away. They are gonna spell out every single bit of info, what you are, who you work for, what you can do, what you eat, where you sleep, who pays for what etc....if people actually read them and didnt just ohhhh, i wantz moneyz... or i could be missing it cuz i couldnt finish reading.

ya i finished it...slowly and painfully....and cant figure out why people sign those. Im all for people making me music to listen to...but damn you pay for everything, but dont get a income really....now when a musician says anything to me im gonna laugh cuz they must be the dumbest people on earth signing that...prob be cheaper to do it yourself....or do a massive discussion.

This is precisely why it's important to pay for music.

Any band that isn't on some kind of Metallica level pretty much needs all the money they can get. It doesn't matter how much goes to them, as long as it goes to them. The age-old excuse of "They make more money from shows.", which isn't strictly true, is dead.

Articles like this have been around for ages, Steve Albini himself wrote one.

Not everyone on a contract is being screwed though. However, that's only big bands. Bands like Radiohead can call their own shots, you know?

It's pretty much all the fault of the stupidity of boring people.

I don't feel like supporting bands. Where is my gain in doing that?
I am not a freaking charity for musicians.

If they can't figure out their business they have none.

That's not a side blow, that is simply how it is.

Just to explain it a little:
Host your own server. Expect the same amount of piracy. Ask for 1$ for the complete Album as a HQ download in all formats. You already make three times more money than signed, with this business model, which is basically about high-schooler-start-up level complicated, if you estimate the sales going up 0% even though the price is a little more competitive.

I would say actually, that I feel cheated by those bands who are assholes to their fans by not doing this and forcing them to litter the world with pointless garbage.

You already can make more money from being on youtube than from CD sales anyways...
You would just have to have the want to stop it and quit being a freaking pain in the *** zombie infect, poisoned with the "music is the soul of artists sacrificed at the altar of muses" idiocy.
