I played a little bit and this is pretty much it. You wouldn't know it, but there are NO NPC's in this game. Walking around I saw people standing and walking around like guards and stuff. I looked at my objectives and I saw I get EXP and credits for doing things like "Patrol (insert place) for X in-game minutes" or "Scout (insert place) X amount of times"... which I assume means to just walk through it and watch over the place for enemies. I guess I was playing as the policing faction.

But to an extent the "quests"/objectives in this game facilitate role-playing or at least doing your job in the universe.

I was patroling around New York City and I saw some guy kill another guy (perhaps to be a jerk or to complete his own objectives). I didn't really have a great weapon or a lot of ammo, nor was I entirely sure how the people in the game world feel about me killing someone, so I just decided to follow him around for a little bit. Eventually he met up with a friend and I approached them. I didn't say anything, but they both looked at me and the murderer said "What the **** are you lookin' at?" I just ran off and decided to follow them around a little more before giving up on it, but that whole scenario just seemed so thrilling to me. If I were better, I could've probably tried to stun and arrest him, but still... if everyone role plays and does their part, this could be a VERY interesting game. All of the ingredients are there, it's just up to the players to make the most of it.

The game is third person shooting and you don't see peoples names unless you get up close enough to really have the crosshairs on them, so sneaking around following people is a perfectly legitimate (and kind of fun) tactic. It's pretty easy to hide behind stuff and not have anyone see you.

Not to mention, if you crank the volume a little and really get into it, the game has some incredible futuristic atmosphere. It's kind of like how I felt with Anarchy Online back in the day, before they reworked the starting areas and the expansions kind of messed with the formula.

Well said Dreakon. The reason why this game has been failing since launch, has been the community. Not many enjoy the idea of a free environment where everything is player run, which is why people tend to revert back to easy games where there are less choices. But my advise is to keep persevering and learn to understand the game abit more, enjoy the roleplay, and get involved with the faction you're in. Then the flow of the game will definately get you hooked. Just my 2 cents to the ragers/impatient/noobs/clueless players.

Well after a whole lot of effort to get the patcher working I finally managed to login yesterday and I gotta say my opinion was really badly mixed :x.

My FOM Story, both overwhelming stupid but also cool . (Warning its LONG)

The game was very good with the roleplaying before it was shutdown and reborn into what it is now. Rarely anyone roleplays but more then half of the community seems to be filled with deathmatch, gun totting sores. I picked FDC at the start like my old, old character and as soon as I get to the market terminal I get killed by a fellow FDC member, it wasn't even an enemy, just some asshole who can't roleplay for crap >>".

Restored, moved on, went to a safer, secure terminal and bought my ammo. Whipping my gun out incase I would be hunted by more death matchers, I made my way to what seemed to be a captain training some new FDC recruits. They tell me to change uniform and I asked them to what but apparently they just ignored me, even when I asked for the third time. Just bought the uniform, came back, found out they ditched, ****in A.

On the bright side though it appears that the small group I encountered was actually there to put NYC into some sort of lockdown state. Brotherhood members were swarming NYC for some strange reason and every single security door was on. It was pretty epic though slow. People were in organized squads and since I had no clue what was going on I tried to ask what was happening but once again..no friggin response. I just played along and did whatever. One guy deactivates the door and sneaks down the hallway, crouching. All of a sudden me and the others around me could see laser beams and bullets fly along the hall and the captain was immediatly killed. I could see FDC soldiers move forward or take cover fighting what I assumed was the Brotherhood. I moved in to assist, trying to take some of them down.

I managed to assist and kill one but was then immediately killed. Rearming and using the teleporter, I found myself in a main safe spot for FDC and that police faction (forgot the name :~) and it was pretty heavily guarded. Curious, I scouted out ahead, deactivated the security door and crouched. I peeked my head out to look down at the halll and found maybe eight or so brotherhood members. They see me and I run back to base, telling them I see a large amount of brotherhood. One guy comes back with me and counts 8 and then I end up in a 2nd gunfight.

Some FDC and police alike joined us and we tried to take down the Brotherhood soldiers at the end of the hall. We started out with about 5, obviously out numbered but around 4 or 5 more joined us. We managed to kill three or four of them and they took down two of our allies while badly injuring me. We move in to capture or eliminate whatever brotherhood was left but guess what? It was a trap. Soon we found ourselves in a corner and surrounded. Four or five brotherhood soldiers came from one corner while the survivors from the previous firefight covered the others. Due to lack of cover, friendly fire and fear I ended up dying first so I had no clue what happened to us. Rearming, I went back and was disappointed to see that the raid was over. I guess the brotherhood retreated..for now. After that I logged off and took a break.

------------

Overall, the game is still intense and fun if you have good roleplaying buddies with you but the community also seems unhelpful at all. I try to ask for information as to whats going on but nothing, they just ignore me. Well that was a pretty good experience though, FDC prevails!

I'm playing with the Guardians of Mankind, join us if you need any help. Most of our players are very helpful and friendly. Just give us a hollar in faction chat.
