I thought i won't have to explain it , but i see i have to.

by saying most popular in this sentence he states that the theory is not the best scientifically explained , but a one that has the biggest approval, if he would have said that the string theory is the most scientifically proven one , i wouldn't say a thing.
If something is most popular , it doesn't mean it is logical has sense or has been proven.
There always is a posibility that 99% of people are living in a lie , while 1% know the "truth". By living in the 99% without questioning it does not make you logical nor sensible , you are just being conformist.

He could have the intention of what i typed , if so , then the sentence was wrongly structured, but i don't have to be guessing in everyones post what he really wants to say , if not , then what i have typed above applies.
