I don't feel like it's changed much over the years. Overall the series has been ok, but the games still pretty much have the same feeling to them (which isn't a bad thing) but do not feel like huge improvements over the older titles. I wouldn't say it's failing as a series though, more like hit and miss which seems to be the case because it seems everyone has a different opinion on which of the games are good and bad. I've played just about all of them including spins offs such as the tactical entries on the PS and GB/DS as well as the Rogues (Chocobo's Dungeon). The series feels to me like it's gone " ~ "
A good example of a continually improving series is Shin Megami Tensei/Persona/Devil Summoner series. Apart from the extreme failure SMT:I It's gotten better over the years with each game. They've gone " / " A good example of a series that's failing: the Mana series. They've gone " ^ "

I've only played 1,2,4,6,7,8,9,11. My favorite was 6 & 7. I haven't beaten # 1 and 2, but I've completed 4,6,7,8,9. Sadly I wasn't able to obtain a copy of 3 & 5
. I haven't even played 10,12, or 13 yet, nor do I really plan to in the future. Personally imo, game started dropping off around FF 8&9. I hope that any future games they make, they will really put alot of effort into the story, but that seems unlikely the way things are going. Makes me sad..and thats when I go back and play one of the older games over again Just started a new file on FF 2.

Final Fantasy isn't getting worse, but it's just that it's the same every time. That isn't a bad thing but that isn't also a good thing in this situation because we've had 10+ games with aprox. the same concept but just a revamped graphics and possible addons for the battle system. Though thats just my opinion, I haven't played anything past FF 9, excluding 11. New graphics do help, but they don't seem to have much of a hold on my interest as what a game with a good story would provide. It may be age affecting me, who knows.

13 and 14 both look really good to me. I think graphics can be really beneficial in an RPG because everything is so cinematic. I don't think it's really a waste that they're shifting towards graphics on their new Final Fantasy titles. That's the whole point in developing for next-gen consoles.
Anyway, this topic has been coming up a lot lately and I think people who say the series has gone to shit lately are just trying to make the statement that they're "old school". I didn't get into Final Fantasy until after X was released, so this could possibly cloud my judgement. However, I've beaten every Final Fantasy game from IV through XII. I'll admit that I didn't think X was a very fun experience, nor X-2. I just didn't like the characters or the story very much. I also don't consider IX to have been much of an epic... While it's true that IV through VIII were amazing, they were no more awesome than the two latest Final Fantasy titles, XI and XII. V also would have much less enjoyable if it weren't for the awesome job system which influenced later Final Fantasy titles. XI is my favorite MMORPG of all time, and XII is one of my favorite single-player RPGs. VII's cast of characters was near flawless but I don't think it's fair to look back on your nostalgic PS1 experiences and say, "the series has changed since then, so it must be a bad thing." We'd be complaining much more if the series didn't evolve in some way... |
