I am just wondering what is everyone's opinion on all the new Final Fantasy games coming out?
Do you think the series is losing the "fantasy" it had before? After looking at Final Fantasy XIII I feel like the story is too generic. The characters are bland. The graphics are ok and visually nice to look at though. I just feel like the developers are running out of ideas and using rehashed ideas. The only thing they seem to change are the graphics and battle system. I enjoyed final fantasy 6,7,8 and 9 but after that it seemed to go down hill. Well I guess you can expect some of the same old story. Oppressive tyrannical city-state, hunted rebel group, lead character that once fought for the bad guys but now joins the outcasts. When I used to play the final fantasy series in the 1990s it seemed a lot more care was put into the plot. Now it looks like all the attention goes to graphics and making the characters as stereotypical as possible. It reminds me of the regurgitated anime that is coming out these days..... Just look at the black dude!!!! Although now that I think of it Barry from FF 7 was the same. Maybe the FF series never changed and I just outgrew them. So what is everyone's opinion of the series and it's progress of over 20 years? |

FF started to fail after FF10. It has a nice story, but it isn;t all that great that they can learn eachother skills and such. Kills the factor 'job system'. FF12 was really the worst of them all! Battles were to slow, license system sucked like hell, esper system was annoying and then the quickenings! You could kill a boss in 1 hit if you knew how to combo them
They should've kept things like the FF6/FF4. Secret characters, challenging dungeons and each char has it's own specific skills.

I got a buddy who has never played FFXII and he won't give it a chance because they changed the battle system, and Bahamut is an airship.
But i wasn't a fan of it either; i didn't like being able to slash something with a sword from 100ft away. And they've obviously been getting more tech oriented after 5... Alot of the nerd still love the swords and magic, harps and row boats... Also, FF has rehashed alot already, "The Heroes of Light"... "The Crystals"... A couple name changes and good to go. I'm still looking forward to it, it should be one of the better ones. |

I feel Final Fantasy has been on the decline since V, or VIII at the very most.
The characters' back-stories no longer really interest me, and as you mentioned, their personalities do seem to have become downgraded over the years, though the technical quality of them have improved very much. Final Fantasy's story formula is much what you said, member of BAD GUY ORGANIZATION / NATION X, GOOD GUY/GIRL has "moral epiphany", leaves said Organization / Nation, joins a rebel group, ends up dismantling evil schemes, thus saving the world with the Power of Love and Friendship once more. Or just have the main character get mixed up in some nonsense, and just sticks along for the ride. Like FFXII. Though that is probably the [Japanese]RPG formula in general, and not just Final Fantasy, either way, it's been starting to take it's toll on me. Last edited by Vorufugango; 11-09-2009 at 07:28 AM. i really don't see what the big draw to FF12s battle system, it was practically less input than the ATB/FFX system. Heck you could pretty much automode through most battles. Don't bother listing any optional bosses, since those don't count toward a games difficulty.
