Tight Like That

Did you know starbursts and skittles contain gelatin, which is an animal byproduct?
If I ever became a vegetarian, I would have never guessed that I couldn't eat Jello or skittles :/ What else am I forgetting about? |

Yes, besides not eating meat most vegetarians will opt out of eating gelatin-based products because gelatin is made of animal bones and intestines.
Lots of products use gelatin such as Jell-O deserts (kind of obvious), marshallow (and 'fluff', that spread made from marshmallow - was disappointing because I loved peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches as a kid), certain types of yogurts and ice cream, certain types of margarine and butter subtitutes, various candies (gummy bears and worms, lollipops...), cake frosting, cream cheese/soure cheese. Things you might be forgetting about? If you mean animal products in foods that you might not know about, Carmine is often found as a red food coloring and it's made from crushed insects. Rennet is often found in cheese and it's obtained from calf stomachs. I wouldn't really say avoiding gelatin is 'vegan' since it's traced back to both animal bone and meat, which a vegetarian would typically not consume. The main reason a lot of vegetarians might continue to eat gelatin-based products is ignorance. They don't know that gelatin is a product in the food they're eating or they don't know what gelatin is. People don't pay enough attention to what they put in their bodies. The good thing is that most of these foods do have vegan/vegetarian substitutes. I was able to find a vegan marshmallow substitute for my sandwiches and you can even get vegetarian gummy bears. You might have some trouble with Skittles, though. (erm, actually I looked it up and Skittles are now made gelatin-free. Maybe the ones you found were really old. At least, in my area Starburst and Skittles candy say "gelatin-free, gluten-free". Good thing I don't eat that stuff anyway.) Last edited by Lalafell; 11-09-2009 at 03:22 PM. |
