Default New computer....

Ok, so I've been putting together my specs for a new PC, and come up with the following list of components.

Is there anyone here who is tech-savvy enough to tell me if they should all work together? I've done a fair amount of research and think that this should be a fairly good system (for my budget), but I'd be interested to hear everyone's opinions.

Yes, I know that it's not top of the line, but I'm upgrading from a piece of sh-t and don't have a lot to spend. Still, if you think I'm wasting money on a cheap component, then you're welcome to advise.

Cheers y'all.

Basic Spcs

Intel i5 (Quad core, 2.6mhz)
4x1Gb DDR3 RAM
EDITED Nvidia GT 240
EDITED: 500Gb SATA drive @ 7200rpm
700W PSU

Tech Specs

Intel Core i5 750, S 1156, Lynnfield, Quad Core, 2.66GHz, DMI 2.5 GT/s, 8MB Cache, 95W, Retail

EDITED: 1GB Gainward GT 240, 1600MHz GDDR3, GPU 585MHz, Shader 1420MHz, 96 Cores, D-Sub/ HDMI/ DL DVI-I
2x 2GB (2x1GB ) Super Talent Project X, DDR3 PC3-14400 (1800MHz), 240 Pin, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, CAS 7
EDITED: 500GB Samsung HD502HJ Spinpoint F3, SATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ, OEM + 100cm Akasa
700W Storm LPK19-35 ,120mm Silent Fan, 24pin +4 pin +12V PSU ATX 2.2
Also: Coolermaster Elite 330 Blk/Silv Midi Tower Case w/o PSU (New Improved Version) Scan Exclusive

My budget was £500 (UK) including VAT. This sits at £480, so I will be using my old monitor, keyboard, mouse, optical drives etc. for the moment. Have yet to choose a case.

The only things that bothers me in that list is the 9500gt. I would change it unless you're not into the latest games/gaming alot or heavy editing.

That card will require an update sooner or later anyways.

Eep, I thought it was good! Been out of the loop for too long.

Ok, did some shopping around and swapped the card for this...

1GB Gainward GT 240, 1600MHz GDDR3, GPU 585MHz, Shader 1420MHz, 96 Cores, D-Sub/ HDMI/ DL DVI-I

and the HD for this

500GB Samsung HD502HJ Spinpoint F3, SATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ, OEM + 100cm Akasa

...and have kept the price roughly the same.

That's barely an upgrade compared to the 9500gt, as the gt240 is benchmarked between the 9600gt and 9800gt.

Edit: would you mind linking the site you are buying from?

You also could go down on your PSU (550w should be more than enough) as you are not SLI/CGing.

Argh! I get so confused with all the numbers, I can't tell any more.

Do you know where I can find some good benchmarking? Or can you suggest a couple of alternative cards? The one listed is about 80 of my English pounds, the one I listed before was about half that. My budget is starting to stretch a little thin, and I haven't bought an OS yet =\

I appreciate your help though.

Would you mind linking the site you are buying from? It would be easier to search for parts without having to deal with usd to gbp and stuff.

Sure, I'm shopping at Scan.co.uk since then can deliver fast and cheaply and insure me against breaking anything by being an idiot whilst putting it together.

I've also just noticed that they have a £500 self-built model there at http://3xs.scan.co.uk/ShowSystem.asp?SystemID=1011# but it doesn't look as nice as mine.

Cheers!

Case: Antec 300
HDD: WD Caviar Black 500GB
RAM: 2x2GB Corsair DDR3
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
CPU: i5 750

This comes down to £415.18

Now the tricky part for you to decide:
512mb XFX HD5750 (£86) or the 1GB version (£114). If you play GPU heavy games or do alot of editing, I'd take the 1gb version. If casual you should be fine with 512mb ram.

There is a 1GB version from Asus for £99, but that's on preorder and is still awaiting an E.T.A.

EDIT: realized I forgot the psu. X.X
Edit2: searching again. Hang on. >_<

Ok, seems to be a very similar spec. What's the difference in the motherboard you chose?

EDIT: And I forgot I need to buy windows.

Damnit. Extending budget.....

Nothing really worth mentioning, it's a tad cheaper. (I kind of suck at building real thight budget pcs)

So redid it with PSU this time:

Case: Coolermaster RC330 V2
PSU: Silverstone ST50F 500W
GPU: HiS HD4850 512mb
HDD: WD Caviar Black 500GB
RAM: 2x2GB Corsair DDR3
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
CPU: i5 750

Comes down to a total of £511.82.

As for windows... *cough* it. ^^;
