You can return the Wireless N router. The technology is all backwards compatible.
Your problem is probably the distance and the walls. The signal will naturally degrade when there are things inbetween. Some routers have an option to boost the signal strength but I can't recall if linksys routers do. Also if your Dad's computer is under the desk and the adapter is plugged into a USB port in the back, that'll hurt the signal right there. Whenever I used usb adapters I found that the signal improved slightly if I plugged them into a USB port in the front. |

i recommend setting up your parents connection beside the router to see if it works than increase the distance. also, change the default frequency channel of your router. if the issue is really a distance issue, you will need to set up a refresher for the wireless signal to be carry over.
