i think i already know the answer to this but could the presence of a microwave between the USB and the router affect the signal?

If yes, then wouldn't that only matter when the microwave is in use?

yes a microwave or "cordless phone" can mess it up. but i belive the microwave would have to be in use before it missed it up

You can return the Wireless N router. The technology is all backwards compatible.

Your problem is probably the distance and the walls. The signal will naturally degrade when there are things inbetween. Some routers have an option to boost the signal strength but I can't recall if linksys routers do.

Also if your Dad's computer is under the desk and the adapter is plugged into a USB port in the back, that'll hurt the signal right there. Whenever I used usb adapters I found that the signal improved slightly if I plugged them into a USB port in the front.

Microwaves are shielded so microwave waves shouldn't affect it. You should try moving the computer closer to the router to make sure it's the distance and not the electronics.

Microwaves and phones work on completely different wavelengths. If you want to see if your microwave is shielded, unplug it, put a laptop in it and see if you can ping it.

i recommend setting up your parents connection beside the router to see if it works than increase the distance. also, change the default frequency channel of your router. if the issue is really a distance issue, you will need to set up a refresher for the wireless signal to be carry over.
