Nope, Unicorns aren't reserved for female characters only. I purchased a Unicorn, and my character is indeed male.
The Unicorn is beautiful, it pulses with a slow, gentle glow and it glows in the dark. Carries two people, pretty sweet.
The only downfall is, on my Unicorn I get huge amounts of attention, which is annoying. Some people might like this, but I don't.
