I think you're forgetting that sky-scrapers and other multi-story buildings were a rarity in most communites in the past, hell cities in general were highly uncommon. Yeah didnt Columbus say the Earth was round? He was waiting for his dad's ship to pull into shore. And he saw it arise from the horizon. And since there were no submersible ships then he came to the conclusion Earth was round.
