Default Problem with external?

I had my 500gb seagate external hdd for about a year.
One day it started to get errors, like it said something couldn't be downloaded into \$, can't remember.(edit: It was a delayed write fail)
Fixed it by rebooting hdd, but then it wouldn't recognize the hdd. So I unpluged the hdd and computer for 10 mins.

Main Problem:
Recognized it, but then my hdd started having some problems. When I download files like .rar, some of them are perfectly fine but others are damaged/corrupted. I redownload them but they are corrupted again until a few tries later. Not sure how to fix this, I haven't changed anything in hardware.

Rightclick HDD-> properties-> tools-> error checking.

Mark both the options, start and let it finish.

Using seagate's diagnostic tools, it failed the short drive self-test, and gave me an eight-digit code, indicating drive failure.

I can use the drive fine, but its just that files corrupt sometimes. Chkdsk takes a long time considering its a 500 gb but should I still do it? Is my drive dead or is it just bad sectors?

Do what I said, except this time check the 2nd option and uncheck the 1st one.

Do the 1st one later when you have time (when you are at work/school etc).

Alright I did the second one, not sure if it did anything though. I'll do the long one tomorrow when I go to sleep/school.
