we arent so far from that now.

a kid might get beat up at school for the clothes he wears, but most people grow out of that kind of overt persecution when they become adults.

in a world where biological randomness is replaced by market whims.... theres no telling how good or how bad it might get.

controlling the spread of disease has enabled mankind to prosper and thats a good thing (ignoring the overcrowding issues). but this kind of gene engineering wont only be used for that.... the cosmetic side is simply too fickle and too transparent.

youll end up with brilliant genetic engineers going into the private sector to work for pharmaceutical companies because they pay more than the organisations trying to cure cancer or whatever disease you want to pick.

i think its a bad idea.

I don't see how you consider being emo and being physically disabled to be anything near the same thing. One's a choice the individual makes (unless there is an emo gene), the other is something that the individual cannot change.

Making fun of someones style choice (which is changeable) is totally different than making fun of someone who lost their legs in a freak bowling accident.

We kinda are (in our society at least). People get outraged when people try pick on the elderly (find that video of the 4 grandma's beating up the guy who was talking all smack after rear ending them, satisfying).

Clothes are changable, genetics are not (yet at least).

It seems to be that you are assuming the worst case scenario, I can understand the worst case scenario, I just don't think that is likely.

well to me the likelihood of that not happening doesnt outweigh the problems if it actually does. its a risk assessment, and in my eyes it comes out as negative.

Uhm, yea.

People would definitely go into a moral monologue about if they should beat up a person with a stick or shouldn't, based on whether there was a choice they made and how it was or wasn't voluntarily to a certain degree.

Just as you implied...

Humanity is totally over violence? BS.

PS:
Emos don't get hated on because they are adherent to certain fashion.
They get hated on because they are kids.

PPS:
Designer babies;
Totally not related to fashion, huh?

A thing that wandered my mind when reading this:
Assuming you would not follow the trend and instead of making your daughter a hot *** *****, you make her a somewhat average looking fat girl.
What do you think her opinion on it will be?

Just go and ask your mother about how she feels about the fact that she is pretty old by now and multiply that response with 50.
