I've upgraded my computers RAM to 3GB and I'm wonding in your opinion is it worth backing up all my files to run at 64Bit? What's so different and how big of a change does it make? Thanks.
(Computer passes 100% for 64bit combatibility.) *Waits for SlowBurnzzz* |

if your ever going to upgrade to 4Gb+ you can go ahead and do it now but it can decrease performance because alot of games/programs are 32 bit and 64 bit has to convert 32-bit calls into 64-bit and that can decrease performance a little bit, so i recommend sticking with 32bit.

I think 32-bit handles up to 3.5 gigs as said before but it also subtracts your video card memory from that so if you have a 512 card you'd only have 3 gigs available for your system (maybe, I forgot where I heard that from).

All I know having got Windows 7 64 bit is that it install software into two different locations depending on whether they run on 32 bit or 64 bit, I do not know how it recognises this, whether it has a list or something, but it knows.
If you have under 4GB ram it's not worth it, however, if you plan to get more in the future, then you should go for it. I notice no difference. |

I'm not sure, but doesn't GPU RAM fall under the 3GB of allocatable RAM? Other than actually having 4GB or more of ram while being a gamer, 64bit is only for futureproofing purposes as most games are still on the 32bit architecture that has been adjusted to make on 64bit architecture. In rare cases, such as the infamous Aion's crysystem.dll crash, 64bit is useful as it can address more RAM to the application. The crash was caused on 32bit systems due to hitting the virtual ram limit and crashes afterwards as it tries to write into protected RAM. In any case, this isn't a bad time to switch to 64bit as most of the applications can run on 64bit architecture without problems.

VRAM does fall under it.
Physical limit is 4GB on x32, however, most often you will find people having access to less than 3,5GB, due to among other things their VRAM. Source for physical limit 4GB: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/libr...its_windows_xp Last edited by Ronin; 01-04-2010 at 06:36 PM. |
