Default Partitioning Plans

Ok, here's the thin, I order new fans to replace the non-working cpu fans. While at it, I order a new SATAII 500GB hard-drive.

Once I install the new hardwares and back up my data on an external drive, I plan on partitioning my computer. At the moment, my computer only has 1 partition to make things simpler when my family wanted to borrow my pc. Now they all have their own pc/laptops, having a single partition has no benefits to me.

While partitioning my drive, I plan on installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 OS as well as Ubuntu Linux OS. So this is my current design plans:

Primary Hard-Drive
( C: 200GB ) - Windows 7 & Large Workspace Applications
( D: 50GB ) - Ubuntu
(may vary if i plan on installing more OS)

Secondary Hard-Drive
( E: 100GB ) - Games
( F: 50GB ) - Coding Projects
( G: 350GB ) - Data Storage (mostly anime, but i burn them onto blank media semi-annually)

My part should be arriving sometime today or tomorrow. too bad Solid-State Drives are too expensive T-T I would personally love to have them just for separate OS' partition only XP maybe in the future though ^^

How big is your current HDD?
Because you could use that one as data storage as read/write and buffer speeds aren't as important there as your OS hdd would be.

its only 250gb. my post shows you the amount of space ebign allocated for each partition, obvious the biggest drive will have its partition to hold the remainder of the harddrive space.

i figure, 200gb for windows 7 and other large application to do my work is sufficient enough. both drive are at 7200RPM with 16mb cache memory.

=.=
I should learn to stop scanreading (skipped the bolded part), especially on a stressful day.

Well, you should remove about 35GB from a single partition on the 2nd HDD as the 'newer' HDDs (about any from 3 years old) won't have the full capacity of what the manufacturer says. (500gb-> 465gb, 1000gb-> 930gb etc)

tell me about it, my parts apparently will be coming much more later than expected the last thing i want to do is do all of this during the beginning of the semester because we start using our computer to do our coding work right away

I'd say shortstroke your new 500GB(if you're going to reinstall your OS) to about 100GB, you're going to have your OS boot lots faster. Also, why don't you use your external HDD to store your anime?

i tried out ubuntu live cd, didn't like it much. i will check out Debian, but i probably will go with Mandriva =)

i ended up installing windows 7 pro 32-bits, because many of the utility software i want only supports 32-bits, although people say it works in 64-bits, there's no support for it.
